Ranoidea is a group, or genus, of frogs. These frogs belong to the Pelodryadinae family. You can find them living in Australia, New Guinea, the Maluku Islands, and the Louisiade Archipelago.

Scientists sometimes disagree about which frogs belong in the Ranoidea group. Many frogs now in Ranoidea used to be in other groups like Litoria, Dryopsophus, or Hyla. In 2016, some scientists suggested splitting the Litoria group into smaller ones. Many other amphibian scientists agreed with this idea. However, some did not, partly because not all Litoria frogs had been studied using DNA tests.

About Ranoidea Frogs

All frogs in the Ranoidea group have special features. Their pupils (the dark part of their eyes) are shaped like slits that open up and down. Also, the clear membrane over their eyelids has no color.

Tadpoles and Their Homes

Many Ranoidea species have tadpoles that live in mountain streams. These tadpoles have very large mouths. Their mouths are located on the undersides of their bodies. This helps them feed in fast-moving water.

Species of Ranoidea

Here are some of the frog species that are part of, or were once part of, the Ranoidea genus:

Scientists also believe the Papua big-eyed tree frog (Van Kampen, 1909) might be a Ranoidea species. They are collecting more information about where this frog lives to be sure.
