*Club domestic league appearances and goals |
Tuncay Şanlı (born January 16, 1982), known simply as Tuncay, is a former Turkish footballer. He mostly played as a striker (a player who scores goals) or an attacking midfielder (a player who helps create goals). He also played on the wing (the sides of the field).
Tuncay was a key player for the Turkish national team. He helped them finish third in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2008 European Championships. With 22 goals in 80 games, he is one of Turkey's top goal scorers ever.
He started his career at his local club, Sakaryaspor. Then, in 2002, he joined one of Turkey's biggest clubs, Fenerbahçe. He became very popular there and made headlines in 2004 when he scored three goals against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. After winning three league titles with Fenerbahçe, he moved to the English club Middlesbrough.
Tuncay played for Middlesbrough for two seasons and was even named their Player of the Year in 2009. However, he couldn't stop them from being relegated (moving down to a lower league). After this, Tuncay joined Stoke City in August 2009. He later played for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, Bolton Wanderers back in England, Bursaspor in Turkey, Umm Salal in Qatar, and Pune City in India.

Playing for Clubs
Fenerbahçe Years
Tuncay caught the attention of the big Turkish club Fenerbahçe in 2002. He was only 20 years old and had been playing very well for his hometown club, Sakaryaspor. He signed a five-year contract with Fenerbahçe. During his time there, he helped the team win the Turkish league title three times.
On December 8, 2004, Tuncay made history. He became only the second player ever to score three goals (a hat-trick) against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. He was also the first Turkish player to achieve this in the Champions League.
Over his five years at Fenerbahçe, he scored 12 goals in 26 Champions League games. His former coach, the famous Brazilian player Zico, said that Tuncay was a huge loss for the team because he brought "soul and hope."
Time at Middlesbrough

On June 13, 2007, Middlesbrough announced that Tuncay would be joining them. He signed a four-year contract and completed his move on a free transfer. Tuncay was excited to play in the Premier League and wanted to help Middlesbrough get back into European competitions.
He quickly became a favorite with the Middlesbrough fans. They loved his endless energy and passion during games. Many people praised his effort. In May 2009, football expert Matt Le Tissier said that if Middlesbrough had "11 Tuncay's," they would be a top team.
The 2008–09 season was great for Tuncay personally. He won all four of the club's main awards, including the Player of the Year award with a huge 75% of the votes. However, despite his best efforts, Middlesbrough was relegated to the Championship (a lower league) at the end of the season. Tuncay had hoped to stay in the Premier League.
He started the next season with Middlesbrough and scored two goals in three games. He then had offers from clubs in Germany and Spain but chose to stay in England. Before the transfer window closed, he left Middlesbrough to join Premier League team Stoke City.
First Season at Middlesbrough (2007–08)
Tuncay needed some time to get used to playing in the Premier League. He didn't score in his first 12 league games, but then he scored three goals in three matches. One of his goals, a fantastic volley against Derby County, won the BBC Match of the Day Goal of the Month award for December 2007. He ended his first season as Middlesbrough's second-highest goal scorer with eight goals.
Second Season at Middlesbrough (2008–09)
Tuncay started his second season well, scoring the winning goal against Stoke City. He later scored two goals in a 2–1 win against Aston Villa. In May 2009, he was named Middlesbrough's Player of the Year. In the second-to-last game of the season, he scored another amazing overhead kick goal against Aston Villa, which won him another BBC Goal of the Month award. He even wore the captain's armband for the first time in that game.
Even though Tuncay played very well, Middlesbrough was relegated at the end of the 2008–09 season. He was their top scorer with 7 league goals that season.
Stoke City Adventure
Tuncay joined Stoke City on August 28, 2009, for about £5 million. He signed a four-year contract. He made his debut as a substitute against Sunderland. He scored his first Premier League goal for Stoke on December 12, 2009, against Wigan. He also scored the first Premier League goal of 2010 against Fulham. However, he only started 13 games that season.
In the 2010–11 season, Tuncay scored five goals in five pre-season games. He wanted to play more regularly. He scored a great goal against Manchester United in October 2010. Tuncay left Stoke on the last day of the January 2011 transfer window to join German club VfL Wolfsburg.
VfL Wolfsburg and Bolton Wanderers
Tuncay moved to German club Wolfsburg in January 2011. He only played five games for them before his contract was ended in July 2012.
In August 2011, Tuncay joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He scored a goal on his debut for Bolton in a League Cup game. He played 22 games for Bolton during the 2011–12 season, but the team was relegated.
Later Career Clubs
Tuncay joined Bursaspor in Turkey in September 2012. His contract with them ended in February 2014.
On July 31, 2014, Tuncay signed a one-year deal with Qatar Stars League team Umm Salal.
In 2015, Tuncay was signed by Indian Super League team FC Pune City. In his very first match for Pune City on October 5, 2015, he scored two goals and was named the man of the match.
Playing for Turkey
Tuncay was the vice-captain of the Turkish national team for a while. He scored 22 goals in 80 games for his country.
He scored two hat-tricks (three goals in one game) for Turkey. The first was against Switzerland in a World Cup qualifying play-off match in 2005. The second was in a friendly game against Austria in November 2008.
Confederations Cup 2003
Turkey played in the FIFA Confederations Cup for the first time in 2003. Tuncay made his first full international appearance for Turkey on June 19, 2003.
In his debut game against the United States, he won a penalty and then scored the winning goal in the second half. He scored three goals and had one assist in the tournament. He won the Silver Shoe Award (for being the second-highest scorer) and the Silver Ball Award (for being the second-best player). Turkey finished in third place. Tuncay also holds the record for scoring one of the quickest goals in the history of the Confederations Cup, scoring within 120 seconds.
Euro 2008 Success
Tuncay played a big part in Turkey reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. Turkey became known as the "Comeback Kings" because they often came from behind to win games. In a group stage game against the Czech Republic, Tuncay even played as a goalkeeper for the last few minutes after their main goalkeeper was sent off and all substitutions had been made.
He received a yellow card in the quarter-finals against Croatia, which meant he couldn't play in the semi-finals against Germany. Turkey lost that game, but Tuncay had two assists in his four games during the tournament.
2010 World Cup Qualifiers
After a World Cup qualifier game between Armenia and Turkey in September 2008, both teams received a FIFA Fair Play Award for their good sportsmanship. As captain, Tuncay accepted the award for Turkey. He scored three goals and had two assists in the qualifying rounds, but Turkey did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
How Tuncay Played
Tuncay was best at playing in the "hole" (the space between the midfield and attack) or as a second striker. He could also play anywhere across the midfield and in attack.
