Villeneuve-sur-Lot (in Gascon it's called Vilanuèva d'Olt) is a town in southwestern France. It is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This town is a subprefecture in the Lot-et-Garonne area. Long ago, it was known as Villeneuve-d'Agen.
Villeneuve-sur-Lot is also the main town of its arrondissement. It is the center for two cantons (smaller administrative areas): Villeneuve-sur-Lot-1 and Villeneuve-sur-Lot-2.

History of Villeneuve-sur-Lot
The area where Villeneuve-sur-Lot stands today was first settled by the Romans. In the 11th century, a Benedictine abbey was built nearby. A small village grew around this abbey. It was home to potters and farmers.
Between 1254 and 1263, a special type of town called a bastide was built here. This was done by Alphonse of Poitiers. He also gave the town special rights. Bastides like Villeneuve-sur-Lot often have a rectangular shape. They usually feature a large central square.
Because of its great location on the Lot river, Villeneuve-sur-Lot was important in many wars. It played a role in:
- The Hundred Years' War
- The Huguenot wars (French Wars of Religion)
- The Fronde, which was a civil war in France.
Geography and Location
The town covers an area of about 81.3 km2 (31.4 sq mi). Its average height above sea level is 126 m (413 ft). At the town hall, the height is 56 m (184 ft).
Villeneuve-sur-Lot is surrounded by many other towns. These include Lédat, Castelnaud-de-Gratecambe, La Sauvetat-sur-Lède, Monflanquin, Savignac-sur-Leyze, Saint-Aubin, Trentels, Saint-Sylvestre-sur-Lot, Penne-d'Agenais, Hautefage-la-Tour, Pujols and Bias.

The Lot river flows right through Villeneuve-sur-Lot. The Lède river, which is a smaller river that flows into the Lot, runs through the northern part of the town.

Town Administration
Since 1800, Villeneuve-sur-Lot has been a subprefecture of the Lot-et-Garonne department. It is also the main town of the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. It is the administrative centre (or French: chef-lieu) for two cantons:
- Villeneuve-sur-Lot-1: This canton includes part of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the town of Lédat. In 2014, it had 16,376 people.
- Villeneuve-sur-Lot-2: This canton includes another part of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. It also includes the towns of Bias, Hautefage-la-Tour, Pujols, Saint-Antoine-de-Ficalba and Sainte-Colombe-de-Villeneuve. In 2014, it had 17,055 people.
The town is also part of a group of towns called Grand Villeneuvois. This group works together on common projects.
