Year 350 BC was a time long ago, over 2,300 years before today! It was a year in the ancient Roman calendar. Many important things happened around the world during this time, from big battles to new ideas in science and amazing art.

Events

What Happened Around the World?

Persia and the Middle East

  • The city of Sidon was rebelling against the powerful Persian Empire. Sidon asked its nearby city, Tyre, and Egypt for help, but they didn't get much support.
  • Idrieus became the ruler of Caria after his sister-in-law, Artemisia II, passed away.
  • Soon after becoming ruler, the Persian king, Artaxerxes III, asked Idrieus for help. Idrieus sent a fleet of 40 triremes (ancient warships) and an army of 8,000 paid soldiers, called mercenaries. This force went to Cyprus, led by the general Phocion from Athens.

Ancient Greece

Roman Republic

  • The Gauls, a group of people from Europe, were once again threatening Rome. However, an army made up of soldiers from Rome and its allies managed to defeat them.

The Americas

Big Ideas and Art

Science Discoveries

  • The famous Greek thinker Aristotle suggested that the Earth was a sphere (like a ball). He used observations like lunar eclipses to support his idea. He also wrote about how to think logically in his book Organon.
  • Another great Greek philosopher, Plato, proposed a geocentric model of the universe. This idea suggested that the Earth was at the center, and the stars rotated around it on a fixed sphere.

Amazing Art and Buildings

  • The sculptor Praxiteles created the famous statue called the Aphrodite of Knidos. Roman copies of this statue can still be seen today in the Musei Vaticani in Rome.
  • The building of the Mausoleum in Halikarnassos (which is now Bodrum in Turkey) was finished. This grand tomb was built for the Persian ruler Mausolos by his wife, Artemisia. It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Parts of it are now kept at the British Museum in London.
  • The Corinthian capital (a fancy top part of a column) was made for the tholos (a round building) at Epidaurus. You can see it today at the Archaeological Museum in Epidaurus, Greece.
