The African green pigeon (Treron calvus) is a colorful bird that lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. These birds are known for their bright green feathers, which help them hide among the leaves in trees. They are a type of pigeon, but they look quite different from the gray pigeons you might see in cities!

Adult African green pigeons have special patches on their shoulders that are a deep maroon color. Younger birds, called immature birds, have olive-colored patches instead. These birds are not very big, usually growing to be about 25 to 28 centimeters long. That's about the length of a standard ruler!

Where They Live

African green pigeons can be found in many different countries across Africa. Their home range stretches across a large part of the continent, from west to east and down to the south.

You can find them in countries like Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Eswatini, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. They enjoy living in forests and woodlands where there are plenty of trees and fruits to eat.
