Cumberland County was first settled around 1730. Most of the early settlers were from Scotland and Ireland. Some English and German settlers also came.

At first, people mainly farmed the land. Later, they started other businesses. In 1738, settlers built the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church. It is one of the oldest churches in central Pennsylvania.

On January 27, 1750, the Pennsylvania colony officially created Cumberland County. It was named after Cumberland, England. Carlisle became its main town. The county is in the Cumberland Valley. It stretches about 42 miles from Shippensburg in the west to the Susquehanna River in the east.

The oldest towns are Shippensburg and Carlisle. Shippensburg is home to Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. Carlisle has Dickinson College, founded in 1773. It also has the Penn State Dickinson School of Law.

The United States Army War College is in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It's on the historic Carlisle Barracks. This military post has been around since the 1770s. The college trains high-level military and civilian leaders. It is the most important military school for the U.S. Army.

During the American Civil War in 1863, Confederate soldiers marched through the county. They briefly took control of much of the area.

In the 1900s, towns near Harrisburg grew a lot. These suburbs expanded into eastern Cumberland County. Carlisle also saw its own suburbs grow.
