Georgia is a country that loves sports, and its athletes have been a part of the Olympic Games for many years! Georgia first competed as an independent country in 1994. Since then, Georgian athletes have proudly represented their nation in every Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games.
Before becoming an independent Olympic team, Georgian athletes competed as part of the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1988. After the Soviet Union broke up, Georgia was part of a team called the Unified Team in 1992.
Georgian athletes have won a total of 47 medals! Most of these medals were earned in exciting sports like wrestling, judo, and weightlifting. The Georgian National Olympic Committee was started in 1989 and officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1993. This recognition allowed Georgia to send its own team to the Olympics.
