ISO 3166-2:AZ facts for kids
ISO 3166-2:AZ is a special code system for Azerbaijan. It's like a secret language used by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to give unique short codes to different parts of countries. Think of it as a way to quickly identify regions within Azerbaijan, just like you might use a postcode for a specific area.
These codes help people around the world understand and share information about places in Azerbaijan easily. For Azerbaijan, these codes are used for two main types of areas:
- One special area called an autonomous republic (which is the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic).
- Many smaller areas called municipalities (cities) and rayons (districts). There are 11 municipalities and 66 rayons.
The municipalities are like big cities that have the same importance as the rayons. One municipality, Şuşa, was removed from this list.
Each code has two parts, separated by a dash. The first part is always "AZ" because that's the code for Azerbaijan. The second part tells you what kind of area it is:
- If it has two letters, it's either the autonomous republic or a municipality.
- If it has three letters, it's a rayon.
