Jennifer's Athletic Journey
Jennifer Dahlgren's first big competition was the 2000 World Junior Championships in Athletics. She did not reach the final round there. She finished 11th in the qualifying stages. At the 2001 World Youth Championships, she placed fourth. However, she won the South American Junior Championships that same year. She also took second place at the Pan American Junior Championships.
The next year, she finished fifth at the World Junior Championships in Athletics. She also won the 2002 South American Junior Championships in Athletics again. The year 2003 was a very successful one for her. She set a new South American junior record in hammer throw. She also won at the Pan American Junior Championships.
Breaking Records and Winning Medals
In 2004, Dahlgren achieved success in three major events. She finished third at the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship. She set a new South American record with a throw of 66.12 meters. She won a gold medal at the South American U23 Championships in Athletics. She also earned a bronze medal at the 2004 Ibero-American Championships. However, her performance at the 2004 Summer Olympics was not as strong. She only managed a throw of 59.52 meters there.
In 2005, she improved her record to 67.07 meters. She also performed better at the NCAA Championships, finishing second. She set a championship record of 65.05 meters. This won her the 2005 South American Championships in Athletics, which was her first senior title. She did not continue this success at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. She had three fouls and was out of the competition.
In 2006, she won the NCAA Indoor Weight throw title. She also set a new US collegiate record in hammer throw. Her throw was 71.78 meters at the SEC Championships. This was the fourth time she had improved her South American record that year. A few months later, she won her first outdoor NCAA hammer throw title. Dahlgren improved her championship record to 69.07 meters. This earned her a second gold medal at the 2006 South American Championships in Athletics. She also won at the 2006 South American Games. This event also served as the South American Under-23 Athletics Championships that year.
She started 2007 by winning the NCAA championships with a throw of 70.72 meters. This was her last amateur title. Soon after, she threw a new South American record of 72.01 meters in Greensboro, North Carolina. She won her first major championship medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. She took the bronze medal with a throw of 68.37 meters. Two Cuban athletes, Yipsi Moreno and Arasay Thondike, finished ahead of her. She represented Argentina at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics. She threw 65.64 meters in the qualifying round. However, this was not enough to reach the final.
In 2008, she had a foot injury. This affected her performance early in the season. She recovered somewhat in time for the 2008 Ibero-American Championships. There, she won the silver medal, finishing behind Rosa Rodríguez. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, her best throw was 66.35 meters. This made her the best South American performer, but she placed 29th overall. She had a weaker performance at the 2009 South American Championships in Athletics. She threw 63.81 meters and won the bronze medal. Despite this, she was still the best South American hammer thrower at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. Her throw of 68.90 meters placed her 17th, but it was not enough to make the final round.
She then started training with Marcelo Pugliese, who was also an Olympic hammer thrower from Argentina. At the start of the 2010 season, Dahlgren set another personal best. She threw 73.74 meters in Buenos Aires.
