List of highest mountains of Tasmania facts for kids
Tasmania, an island state in Australia, is famous for its amazing mountains! Even though parts of Tasmania are quite flat, it's actually one of the most mountainous islands on Earth. Its highest point is Mount Ossa, which stands at 1,617 meters (5,305 feet) tall. Tasmania has ten peaks that are taller than 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) and thirty peaks higher than 1,200 meters (3,937 feet)! This makes Tasmania Australia's most mountainous state.
Most of Tasmania's mountains are found in the western part of the state. They stretch from the coast in the South West all the way inland to the north, or they are located in the Central Highlands.
Tasmania's mountains are very old. They were once part of ancient volcanoes from a supercontinent called Gondwana. These mountains have been a source of great wealth for Tasmania because of the valuable minerals found there through mining. Even the eastern side of the state, which is generally flatter, has some big mountains like kunanyi / Mt Wellington.

How We Know Mountain Heights: A Look Back
It might surprise you, but it took a long time to accurately measure all of Tasmania's mountains! As recently as the mid-1950s, surveys weren't complete. This meant that the heights of many peaks were only "about" right in old lists, like the one in Walch's Tasmanian Almanac.
Because of this, the order of the top 10 peaks used to be different from what we know today:
- Mount Ossa
- Legges Tor
- Barn Bluff
- Mount Pelion West
- Cradle Mountain
- Stack's Bluff
- Mount Gould
- Mount Rufus
- Eldon Peak
- Mount Olympus
When a book called 'The Abels' was written in 1994 by Wilkinson, the first nine peaks on his list were the same as our current list. However, Mount Geryon wasn't on his list, and Mount Gould's height hadn't been measured properly yet. This shows how much mountain surveying has improved over time!
