Michael Stuhlbarg (born July 5, 1968) is an American actor. He is known for playing many different characters in movies and TV shows. He has won several awards, including a Drama Desk Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also been nominated for two Tony Awards and two Emmy Awards.
He became well-known for his role as a troubled university professor in the movie A Serious Man (2009). Stuhlbarg has played many real-life people. These include George Helm Yeaman in Lincoln (2012) and Andy Hertzfeld in Steve Jobs (2015). He also appeared in popular movies like Hugo (2011), Men in Black 3 (2012), and Arrival (2016). He was in Call Me by Your Name and The Shape of Water (both 2017). He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nicodemus West in Doctor Strange (2016) and its 2022 sequel.
On television, he played Arnold Rothstein in HBO's Boardwalk Empire (2010–2013). He also appeared in Fargo (2017). He has performed on Broadway, earning Tony Award nominations for his roles.

Early Life and Education
Michael Stuhlbarg was born on July 5, 1968, in Long Beach, California. His father was a successful businessman. Michael trained to be an actor at The Juilliard School in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1992.
He also studied acting at other places. These include the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the British American Drama Academy in Oxford. He even learned mime from the famous artist Marcel Marceau.

Early Stage and Film Roles
Stuhlbarg began his acting career on stage in 1993. He made his Broadway debut in the play Saint Joan. The next year, he played the main character in Richard II. In 1996, he won the Elliot Norton Award for his role in Long Day's Journey into Night.
His first movie role was in the 1998 drama A Price Above Rubies. In 2001, he appeared in the war drama The Grey Zone. In 2005, Stuhlbarg gave a highly praised performance in the Broadway play The Pillowman. He played Michal, a character who had suffered a lot. He gained 50 pounds for this role. For his work, he won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for his first Tony Award.
Rising to Fame in Movies and TV
In 2006, Stuhlbarg had a recurring role on the TV series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In 2008, he played Prince Hamlet in a stage production of Hamlet. Later that year, he was chosen for the main role in the Coen brothers' film A Serious Man. This movie, released in 2009, made him widely known. He played Larry Gopnik, a troubled Jewish university professor. For this role, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
Starting in 2010, Stuhlbarg played the crime boss Arnold Rothstein in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. This show was very popular. In 2011, he appeared in Martin Scorsese's historical adventure film Hugo. In 2012, he played Griffin, an alien with special abilities, in the science fiction comedy Men in Black 3. In 2014, Stuhlbarg played Paul Marshall, the manager of chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer, in Pawn Sacrifice. In 2015, he was in Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs movie, playing computer scientist Andy Hertzfeld. He also played actor Edward G. Robinson in Trumbo.
In 2016, Stuhlbarg appeared in the science fiction drama Arrival. He played a CIA agent trying to understand alien messages. In the same year, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nicodemus West in Doctor Strange. He also played a lobbying firm head in the political thriller Miss Sloane.
In 2017, Stuhlbarg played Sy Feltz in the TV series Fargo. He also co-starred as Professor Samuel Perlman in the romantic drama Call Me by Your Name. His performance in this movie was highly praised. For Guillermo del Toro's fantasy drama The Shape of Water, Stuhlbarg played Dr. Robert Hoffstetler, a Soviet spy. His final movie of 2017 was The Post, where he played The New York Times editor A. M. Rosenthal. Appearing in Call Me By Your Name, The Shape of Water, and The Post meant he was in three films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in the same year.
In 2018, he appeared in the miniseries The Looming Tower, playing Richard A. Clarke. He received an Primetime Emmy Award nomination for this role. He received another Emmy nomination for his role as Richard Sackler in the 2021 miniseries ...sick. From 2020 to 2023, Stuhlbarg played Jimmy Baxter, a mob boss, in the TV series Your Honor. In 2024, Stuhlbarg returned to Broadway to play Boris Berezovsky in the play Patriots.

Michael Stuhlbarg married Mai-Linh Lofgren in 2019.
On March 31, 2024, Stuhlbarg was attacked in Central Park, New York City. A man threw a rock at him, hitting him in the back of the neck. The man was arrested.
