The Porrentruy District is one of the three main areas in the canton of Jura, Switzerland. Its capital city is Porrentruy. This district is mostly French-speaking. As of 31 December 2020, about 24,276 people live here.

District Symbols: The Coat of Arms

The blazon (official description) of the district's coat of arms is: Gules a Fess Argent, overall a Cockatrice Or volant holding in legs and beak a Crosier of the same. This means it's a red shield with a silver stripe across the middle. On top of that, there's a golden cockatrice (a mythical creature like a dragon with a rooster's head) flying. It holds a golden bishop's staff (crosier) in its claws and beak.

People and Languages (Demographics)

As of as of December 2020, the Porrentruy District has a population of 24,276 people. Most people speak French as their first language. In 2000, about 91.8% of the population spoke French. The second most common language was German (4.2%), followed by Italian (1.3%). A very small number of people also spoke Romansh.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 48.8% were male and 51.2% were female. Most people living in the district were Swiss citizens. About 39.8% of the people living in the district in 2000 were born there. Another 31.1% were born in the same canton, while 11.3% were born elsewhere in Switzerland. About 14.1% of the population was born outside of Switzerland.

In 2000, many people in the district were married (about 11,599 individuals). There were also many single people (9,390), and some who were widowed or divorced. There were 3,245 households with only one person. Also, 747 households had five or more people living in them.

Population Changes Over Time

The number of people living in Porrentruy District has changed over the years.

  • In 1850, there were about 20,565 people.
  • The population grew to 26,578 by 1900.
  • It then decreased a bit in the early 1900s.
  • By 1970, it reached 26,135.
  • In 2000, the population was 23,971.

Changes to Municipalities (Mergers and Name Changes)

Over time, some smaller towns and villages in the district have joined together to form larger municipalities. This helps them work together better.

  • On January 1, 2009, seventeen municipalities merged into four new ones:
    • Montenol, Montmelon, Ocourt, Saint-Ursanne, and Seleute became Clos du Doubs.
    • Asuel, Charmoille, Fregiécourt, Miécourt, and Pleujouse became La Baroche.
    • Buix, Courtemaîche, and Montignez became Basse-Allaine.
    • Chevenez, Damvant, Réclère, and Roche-d'Or became Haute-Ajoie.
  • On January 1, 2013, Bressaucourt joined with Fontenais.
  • On January 1, 2018, Corban merged into Haute-Ajoie.
  • On January 1, 2023, Damphreux and Lugnez merged to form Damphreux-Lugnez.

How People Vote (Politics)

In the 2007 federal election, people in Porrentruy District voted for different political parties. The most popular party was the CVP, which received about 33.81% of the votes. The next most popular parties were the SPS (31.98%), the FDP (16.2%), and the SVP (12.88%). A total of 8,374 votes were cast in this election.

Beliefs (Religion)

Based on the 2000 census, most people in Porrentruy District are Roman Catholic (77.1%). About 10.1% belong to the Swiss Reformed Church. There are also smaller groups of people who follow other Christian churches, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. About 5.51% of the population said they did not belong to any church or had no specific religious belief.

Learning and Schools (Education)

In Porrentruy, many people have completed higher levels of education. About 30.8% of the population finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. Also, 8.3% went on to complete even higher education, like at a university or a special technical college (a Fachhochschule).

The school system in the Canton of Jura works like this:

  • Children start with two years of optional Kindergarten.
  • Then they go to Primary school for six years.
  • After that, they have three years of mandatory lower Secondary school. Students are grouped based on their abilities.
  • After lower Secondary, students can choose to go to an optional upper Secondary school for three or four years. From there, they can go to a university or college. Or, they can start an apprenticeship to learn a trade.

During the 2009-2010 school year, there were 1,955 students in 117 classes in the Porrentruy District. This included 416 students in kindergarten and 1,539 students in primary school.
