Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles, California. It is located in the San Fernando Valley region. This area also includes part of the Santa Monica Mountains. Because of this, Sherman Oaks has fewer people living in it compared to some other parts of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1927.

History of Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks was developed by Moses Sherman. He was a partner in a company called the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company. This company divided about 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land. This land later became Sherman Oaks. In 1927, each acre was sold for $780. Moses Sherman also helped create the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad.

Over the years, some areas near Sherman Oaks wanted to become part of it. In 1991, a group of homeowners in the Chandler Estates area asked to join Sherman Oaks. They said their neighborhood was originally part of Sherman Oaks. They believed it was labeled as Van Nuys by mistake when ZIP codes were created in 1962. They even showed property deeds to prove their point.

Soon after, another area called Magnolia Woods also asked to join Sherman Oaks. This area was about 45 blocks big. People there also argued that their neighborhood was originally part of Sherman Oaks. Because of these changes, Van Nuys Middle School ended up being in Sherman Oaks, not Van Nuys.

In 2009, the Los Angeles City Council voted again to change the boundaries. This allowed about 1,800 more homes from Van Nuys to become part of Sherman Oaks.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused damage in the area. A group called the Community Redevelopment Agency wanted to help with rebuilding. However, homeowners in Sherman Oaks won a lawsuit. This prevented the agency from managing the rebuilding efforts in their neighborhood.
