The Tramlines Festival is a super fun music festival that happens every year in Sheffield, UK. It's a big party where you can see lots of different bands and artists play live music. When it first started, you could go for free! But now, you need to buy tickets to join the fun.
The festival features both famous national artists and talented local musicians from Sheffield. A group of local venue owners, music promoters, and volunteers help plan and organize everything. The festival's name, "Tramlines," comes from Sheffield's cool tram network.
The very first Tramlines Festival was in 2009. It was a huge hit, bringing in 35,000 music fans! The next year, even more people came. Because it was so successful, Tramlines Festival won an award in 2011 called 'Best Metropolitan Festival' at the UK Festival Awards.

Festival Locations
For many years, the Tramlines Festival took place all over Sheffield city centre. It used more than 70 different places and four main stages. Some of these spots included Devonshire Green, The Leadmill, and O2 Academy Sheffield. The main stage at Ponderosa Park could hold 8,000 people until 2017.
In 2018, the festival moved to a new, bigger home: Hillsborough Park in Sheffield. This new location has four stages, including a huge main stage. It allowed many more people to attend, with space for about 40,000 fans. For the 2019 event, the capacity was set at 30,000 people.
Past Festivals
2009 Festival
The first Tramlines Festival happened in 2009. Famous artists like Pixie Lott, Example, and Reverend and The Makers performed. The festival was a big success, with 35,000 people attending. Everyone, from the organizers to the people of Sheffield, loved it!
Because it was so popular, they announced the festival would happen again in 2010. Back then, festival-goers had to wait in line to get wristbands. These wristbands let them into the different stages.
The 2009 festival also cared about the environment. They recycled a lot of paper, plastic, and aluminum. This led to a bigger environmental effort in 2010 to make the festival even greener.
2010 Festival
Tramlines Festival 2010 took place from July 23 to 25. About 250 artists performed! More venues were added, like Sheffield University's Octagon Centre and Winter Gardens. The main stage at Devonshire Green grew to hold 8,000 people.
Big names like Echo and the Bunnymen, Professor Green, and Craig David were among the headliners. The festival was still free to attend. They stopped using wristbands and instead used a first-come, first-served system at the entrances. A huge 65,000 people came to the festival that year!
New things at the 2010 festival included a Youth Music Festival and a Blues trail. The festival also worked hard to reduce its impact on the environment. They even had a solar-powered headphone disco!
2011 Festival
Tramlines 2011 happened from July 22 to 24. An amazing 175,000 people came to enjoy the music! Over 70 venues were involved, with four main stages and more than 200 live acts.
Some of the popular artists included Ash, Olly Murs, and Pixie Lott. A new part of the festival was 'The Folk Forest.' This was a folk music event held in Endcliffe Park, a little way from the city centre.
2012 Festival
Tramlines 2012 took place from July 20 to 22. Headliners included Reverend & The Makers, Roots Manuva, and We Are Scientists. Other artists like Ms Dynamite and Mr Scruff also played. For the first time, Weston Park hosted a stage.

The Supertram network, which the festival is named after, had a strike during the 2018 festival. Because of this, free bus shuttles were provided to help people get between the festival venues.
