Clyde Jackson Browne (born October 9, 1948) is an American rock musician, singer, and songwriter. He is also known for being a political activist. Jackson Browne has sold over 30 million albums in the United States.
He started writing songs as a teenager in the mid-1960s in Los Angeles. He first became successful by writing songs for other artists. For example, he wrote "These Days" when he was 16. This song became a small hit for the German singer Nico in 1967. He also wrote songs for bands like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Eagles. The Eagles had their first big hit in 1972 with "Take It Easy", which Browne helped write.
After seeing his songs succeed for others, Browne released his own first album, Jackson Browne, in 1972. It included two Top 40 hits: "Doctor, My Eyes" and "Rock Me on the Water". His 1977 album, Running on Empty, became his most famous work. It was recorded while he was on tour, even in hotel rooms and on a tour bus! This album had popular songs like "Running on Empty" and "The Load-Out/Stay". Browne continued to have successful albums through the 1980s, including Hold Out (1980), which was his only album to reach number 1. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

About Jackson Browne
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Jackson Browne was born on October 9, 1948, in Heidelberg, Germany. His father was an American serviceman working for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. When Jackson was three, his family moved to Los Angeles, California.
As a teenager, he started singing folk songs in local clubs like the Ash Grove and The Troubadour Club. He finished high school in 1966. After school, Browne briefly joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. He then moved to Greenwich Village, New York, and became a staff writer for Elektra Records' music company. During this time, he also played guitar for other singers, including Nico.
Writing Songs for Others
Many artists recorded Jackson Browne's early songs before he released his own versions. These artists included the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Nico, Gregg Allman, the Eagles, and Linda Ronstadt. Soon, Rolling Stone magazine recognized him as a talented new songwriter.
Becoming a Star

In 1971, Jackson Browne signed with Asylum Records. He released his first album, Jackson Browne, in 1972. The album featured the hit song "Doctor My Eyes", which made it into the top ten on the US singles chart. Another song from the album, "Rock Me on the Water", also became very popular on the radio.
His next album, For Everyman (1973), sold a million copies. The song "Take It Easy", which he co-wrote with Glenn Frey of the Eagles, had already been a big hit for the Eagles.
