Major Events of 40 BC
Roman Power Shifts
- Lucius Antonius gave up to Octavian during the Siege of Perusia. This was an important moment in the power struggles of Rome.
- Octavian changed his family life. He divorced Clodia Pulchra and then married Scribonia.
- Sextus Pompey took control of Sardinia, a large island in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Treaty of Brundisium
- A very important agreement called the Treaty of Brundisium happened. This treaty divided the huge Roman Republic among three powerful leaders.
- Gaius Octavian took charge of the western parts of the Roman lands.
- Mark Antony was given control over the eastern parts.
- Marcus Aemilius Lepidus managed areas like Hispania (modern-day Spain and Portugal) and Africa (parts of North Africa).
Conflicts in the East
- Quintus Labienus took over Cilicia, a region in what is now Turkey. He then led his army further into Anatolia.
- The Parthians, a powerful empire to the east of Rome, conquered Jerusalem. They removed Hyrcanus II from his position of power.
- Herod the Great had to escape from Jerusalem and went to Rome. There, Mark Antony named him the king of Judea.

- Cleopatra Selene and Alexander Helios were born. They were twins! Their parents were the famous Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII and the Roman leader Mark Antony.
Notable Deaths in 40 BC
- Gaius Claudius Marcellus Minor passed away. His death left his wife, Octavia Minor, a widow. She later married Mark Antony because the Roman Senate (Rome's governing body) decided it was best.
- Fulvia, who was the wife of Publius Clodius Pulcher, also died this year.
