History of Bagrry's
How Bagrry's Started
Shyam Bagri, the founder of Bagrry's, joined his family's flour milling business when he was 21. In 1979, he opened a flour mill in Delhi. He used leftover parts from other mills to build it.
He grew this business a lot. Soon, he was supplying flour to major companies. These included Britannia, Parle Agro, Modern Foods, and Nestle.
The Idea Behind Bagrry's
The idea for Bagrry's came from Mahatma Gandhi. Shyam Bagri read a part of Gandhi's book, 'India of My Dreams'. It talked about the goodness of 'choker', also known as wheat bran. This is a part of wheat that is often removed from processed foods.
Gandhi's words showed how important fiber is for health. This inspired Shyam Bagri to create his own brand of high-fiber health foods. That's how Bagrry's began its journey.
Early Products
In the early 1990s, Shyam Bagri started making and selling wheat bran. He called this healthy food 'Wheatex'.
In 1993, he launched another healthy product: oats. This was sold under the name 'Oatex'. A year later, in 1994, he started making muesli. Muesli is a Swiss breakfast cereal. It mixes oats, wheat flakes, and corn flakes with dried fruit and nuts. This is when he created 'Bagrry's' as the main brand for all his healthy foods.
Growing Popularity
In 2000, US President Bill Clinton visited India. He was served Bagrry's muesli during his visit. This helped make the muesli brand even more popular.
In 2004, Bagrry's tried selling its own cornflakes. But they soon stopped, as Shyam Bagri felt they were not healthy enough. In September 2011, Bagrry's tried again with bran-added cornflakes.
They found real success in the cornflakes market in 2016. This was when they launched 'Corn Flakes Plus'. These corn flakes had extra fiber added to them.
New Ventures
In 2016, the company started quick service restaurants (QSRs). These were called Bagrry's On The Go. These stores offer healthy meals and drinks. They sell sandwiches, bagels, burgers, and baked goods.
These items are made using Bagrry's own healthy ingredients. They use oats, muesli, wheat bran, and quinoa.
In 2018, Bagrry's also started making healthy snacks. They launched flavored foxnuts, also known as Makhanas. The company had studied foxnuts for their health benefits for many years. They first sold them through their Bagrry's Health Cafe.
Quality and Reach
Shyam Bagri always focused on getting the best ingredients. He imported raw oats from England. He also brought in almonds and natural soya-based antioxidants from the United States for his muesli.
Today, Bagrry's has factories in several places. These include Delhi, Niwai in Rajasthan, Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, and Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.
Bagrry's products are sold in over 70,000 stores. They are available in 150 towns and cities across India. You can also find their products in countries like Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
