How Bagrry's Started
The founder of Bagrry's is Shyam Bagri. He joined his family's flour milling business when he was 21 years old. In 1979, he set up a flour mill in Delhi. He used parts from other family mills to get started. He grew this business, selling to big customers like Britannia and Nestle.
The idea for Bagrry's came from Mahatma Gandhi. Shyam Bagri read a part of Gandhi's book, 'India of My Dreams'. It talked about how healthy 'choker' or wheat bran is. Wheat bran is a part of wheat that often gets removed from processed foods. It has a lot of fiber, which is good for you. This inspired Shyam Bagri to create his own brand of high fiber health foods, which became Bagrry's.
In the early 1990s, he began making and selling wheat bran. He called it Wheatex, and it was sold as a high fiber health food.
In 1993, Bagri launched another healthy product: oats. He sold them under the name Oatex. Then, in 1994, he started making muesli. Muesli is a Swiss breakfast cereal. It mixes oats, wheat flakes, and corn flakes with dried fruit and nuts. This is when he created ‘Bagrry's’ as the main brand for all his healthy food products.
In 2000, something special happened. US President Bill Clinton was served Bagrry's muesli when he visited India. This helped make the muesli brand even more popular.
Bagrry's tried selling cornflakes in 2004 but stopped soon after. Shyam Bagri realized that regular cornflakes were not very healthy. In 2011, Bagrry's tried again. They launched cornflakes with added bran. But they found real success in 2016. That's when they launched Corn Flakes Plus, which had extra fiber.
In 2016, the company opened quick-service restaurants (QSRs) called Bagrry's On The Go. These stores serve healthy foods and drinks. You can find sandwiches, bagels, burgers, cookies, and muffins there. All these items are made using Bagrry's healthy ingredients like oats, muesli, wheat bran, and quinoa.
In 2018, Bagrry's also started making healthy snacks. They launched flavored foxnuts, also known as Makhanas. The company had studied fox nuts for a long time to understand their health benefits. They first sold them at their Bagrry's Health Cafe.
Shyam Bagri always focused on getting the best ingredients. He imported raw oats from England. He also brought in almonds and natural soya-based antioxidants for his muesli from the United States.
Today, Bagrry's has manufacturing factories in Delhi, Niwai (Rajasthan), Baddi (Himachal Pradesh), and Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh).
Bagrry's products are sold in over 70,000 stores. You can find them in 150 towns and cities in India. They also sell their products in other countries like Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
