The Grammy Award for Best Rock Album is a special prize given out at the Grammy Awards. These awards celebrate amazing music and recordings. The Grammys started way back in 1958 and were first called the Gramophone Awards. This specific award honors rock music albums that are really well made.
The awards are given each year by The Recording Academy, a group in the United States. They want to celebrate great artistic work and excellent recording skills. They don't care about how many copies an album sells or where it ranks on music charts. They just focus on quality.
Foo Fighters (pictured in 2017) have won this award more than any other artist or group. They have won five times!
The award for Best Rock Album was first given in 1995. The very first winners were the band the Rolling Stones. The name of this award has stayed the same ever since. To win, an album must be mostly (at least 51%) new rock, hard rock, or metal music. This can be songs with singing or just instruments.
Who Gets the Award?
The main artist who performs on the album gets the award. Also, the producers and engineers who worked on more than half of the album get an award too. Before 2001, only the performing artist received the actual award. If producers or engineers worked on less than half of the album, they can apply for a special "Winners Certificate."
Record Holders
The band Foo Fighters has won the Best Rock Album award more than anyone else. They have won five times and have been nominated eight times! They are the only group to win three, four, and even five times. In the early 2000s, Foo Fighters won twice in just four years. They won for their albums There is Nothing Left to Lose in 2001 and One by One in 2004.
Other artists who have won the award twice include Sheryl Crow, Green Day, U2, Cage the Elephant, and Muse. Neil Young has been nominated seven times but has not won this specific award yet. So far, only three women have won: Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, and Hayley Williams from the band Paramore.
