The Care Bears are a super popular toy franchise that started in the 1980s. These colorful stuffed teddy bears became a huge hit. From 1983 to 1987, over forty million of them were sold! Each Care Bear has its own name, special job, and a unique symbol on its tummy. For example, Funshine Bear helps people feel happy and has a smiling sun on his stomach.
The Care Bears first appeared as characters on greeting cards in 1981. The first drawings were made by Elena Kucharik. Later, other characters called the Care Bear Cousins joined the group.
The Care Bears also starred in three animated movies that played in cinemas in the mid-1980s. Around the same time, a TV series was made by DIC and later by Nelvana Limited from Canada.
Recently, Care Bear toys have made a big comeback for the twenty-first century. As part of this return, the Bears have appeared in new DVD movies (which are computer-animated) and even some video games.
