Dejan Miladinović (born December 2, 1948, died August 3, 2017) was a famous Serbian opera director. He grew up in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. His family loved opera! His dad, Dušan, was a main conductor and artistic director for the Belgrade National Opera. His mom, Milica, was a top singer (a mezzo-soprano) in the same opera company.
Dejan studied Theatre Direction at the Academy for Theatre in Belgrade. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees there. He passed away in Belgrade on August 3, 2017.
Dejan Miladinović's Career
Dejan Miladinović was a main stage director and artistic director twice at the National Opera of Novi Sad. He also helped direct big opera projects at the Sava Convention Centre in Belgrade.
He was also the main stage director for the Belgrade National Opera. From 1997 to 2001, he became their Artistic Director. The artists and staff of the Belgrade Opera chose him for this role.
Dejan also taught opera at universities. He was a professor at the Meadows School of Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He also taught at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade and the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California (USC), in Los Angeles, California.
Miladinović directed over 160 shows! Most of these were operas, but he also directed plays and musical comedies. He worked with professional groups in former Yugoslavia and in other countries. He directed shows in places like New York, Dallas, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Seattle, Baltimore, San Diego, and Vancouver.
From October 2006, he was the Artistic Director of Madlenianum Opera and Theatre in Belgrade. This was the first private opera and theater company in Europe. He returned to be the Artistic Director of Belgrade National Opera for a second time in 2012-2013.
Dejan Miladinović was a member of several important groups for artists. These included the A.G.M.A. in the USA and Equity in Canada. He was also part of the UMUS and UDUS in Serbia.
Miladinović's Family History
In the 1700s, the empress Maria Theresia from the Habsburg family gave a special title to the Haydu-Voynits family. Dejan Miladinović was a direct descendant of this family.
