DreamWorks Dragons is an American computer-animated TV show. It is based on the 2010 movie How to Train Your Dragon. The series tells the story of what happened between the first movie and its 2014 sequel.

Many of the original voice actors from the movie returned for the show. These include Jay Baruchel as Hiccup and America Ferrera as Astrid. Other actors like Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Fishlegs) and T.J. Miller (Tuffnut) also came back. Some characters, like Ruffnut, Snotlout, Gobber, and Stoick, got new voice actors.

DreamWorks Dragons was first announced in 2010. The creators wanted the show to feel similar to the movies. It was the first DreamWorks Animation series to be shown on Cartoon Network. Before this, their shows usually aired on Nickelodeon.

The show started with a special preview on August 7, 2012, on Cartoon Network. The official first episode aired on September 5, 2012. The first two seasons had 40 episodes in total. They were called Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk.

Later, the series changed its name to Race to the Edge. These seasons were released on Netflix. The first Race to the Edge season came out on June 26, 2015. More seasons followed in 2016 and 2017. The sixth and final season of Dragons: Race to the Edge was released on February 16, 2018.

What is the story of DreamWorks Dragons?

The story of DreamWorks Dragons happens between the first How to Train Your Dragon movie and How to Train Your Dragon 2. It follows Hiccup as he tries to keep peace between Dragons and Vikings. They now live together on the island of Berk.

Hiccup, his dragon Toothless, and their friends also run a Dragon Training Academy. They face many challenges. These include exploring new, dangerous lands. They also meet new dragons, some of whom are hard to train. Plus, new enemies want to destroy the friendship between Vikings and Dragons.

Who are the main characters?

Dragon Riders

  • Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, III (voiced by Jay Baruchel) – He is a smart but sometimes clumsy Viking. He is also the son of Berk's chief. Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, have the strongest bond of all the riders.
  • Toothless – This is a very rare male Night Fury dragon. Hiccup became his friend after Toothless lost part of his tail fin. Toothless has dark black scales and can shoot powerful plasma blasts. He can also use echolocation to see in the dark.
  • Astrid Hofferson (voiced by America Ferrera) – She is Hiccup's close friend and partner. Astrid is brave and competitive. She is also the unofficial second-in-command of the dragon training academy. She has a strong bond with her dragon, Stormfly. Later in the series, Hiccup and Astrid get engaged to be married.
  • Stormfly – A blue female Deadly Nadder dragon. She is Astrid's dragon. Astrid and Stormfly work very well together. Stormfly can shoot fire and launch sharp spines from her tail.
  • Fishlegs Ingerman (voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse) – One of Hiccup's good friends. He knows a lot about dragons, like an encyclopedia. Fishlegs is not always the bravest, but he is a very loyal friend. He has a very close relationship with his dragon, Meatlug.
  • Meatlug – A brown female Gronckle dragon. She is Fishlegs's dragon. Meatlug is big and not very fast in the air. She and Fishlegs have a caring relationship. Meatlug can also eat rocks and then spit out a valuable metal called "Gronckle iron."
  • Snotlout Jorgenson (voiced by Zack Pearlman) – Another one of Hiccup's friends. He is often reckless and likes to tease others. He has a tricky relationship with his dragon, Hookfang.
  • Hookfang – A red male Monstrous Nightmare dragon. He is Snotlout's dragon. Hookfang sometimes attacks Snotlout or leaves him alone. He can cover himself in flammable saliva and set himself on fire without getting hurt.
  • Tuffnut Thorston (voiced by T. J. Miller) and Ruffnut Thorston (voiced by Julie Marcus (season 1) and Andree Vermeulen (seasons 2–8)) – These are twin brother and sister. They often argue and don't always follow orders.
  • Barf and Belch – A green male two-headed Hideous Zippleback dragon. The twins ride him together. Ruffnut rides Barf, the head that breathes explosive gas. Tuffnut rides Belch, the head that ignites the gas. They sometimes argue, which makes flying difficult.

Other people on Berk

  • Stoick the Vast (voiced by Nolan North) – He is the Chief of Berk and Hiccup's father. Stoick is very strong, brave, and fair. His first dragon was Thornado, a Thunderdrum. Later, he rides Skullcrusher, a Rumblehorn.
  • Gobber the Belch (voiced by Chris Edgerly) – He is the blacksmith of Berk and Stoick's best friend. Gobber is also Hiccup's mentor. He later rides a Hotburple dragon named Grump.
  • Spitelout Jorgenson (voiced by David Tennant) – Snotlout's father. He is proud of Snotlout's successes but gets upset by his failures. He rides a Deadly Nadder named Kingstail.
  • Gustav Larson (voiced by Lucas Grabeel) – A teenager who wants to be a Dragon Rider. He looks up to Snotlout. Gustav rides a Monstrous Nightmare named Fanghook.
  • Gothi (voiced by Angela Bartys) – The village's shaman or wise woman. She cannot speak but communicates by drawing pictures. Gobber or Fishlegs usually translate for her.
  • Mildew (voiced by Stephen Root) – An old, grumpy man from Berk. He grows cabbages and strongly dislikes dragons.

Villains and enemies

  • Johann (voiced by Michael Goldstrom) – A traveling merchant who visits Berk. He seems friendly at first. But later, it is revealed he secretly works with Krogan to find a powerful dragon called a Bewilderbeast. He meets his end when the Bewilderbeast freezes him.
  • Krogan (voiced by Hakeem Kae-Kazim) – The leader of the Dragon Flyers. He works for Drago Bludvist. Krogan is very confident, but sometimes too much. He meets his end when he fails his master.
  • Viggo Grimborn (voiced by Alfred Molina) – The clever leader of the Dragon Hunters. He is often with his older brother, Ryker. Viggo is very smart and often outsmarts the Dragon Riders. He later changes his mind and helps Hiccup and Toothless escape, sacrificing himself.
  • Ryker Grimborn (voiced by JB Blanc) – Viggo's older brother and second-in-command of the Dragon Hunters. Ryker is stronger and more stubborn than Viggo. He is defeated when his ship is swallowed by a giant sea dragon.
  • Savage (voiced by Paul Rugg) – He was Alvin's helper, then Dagur's. He later tries to become chief of the Berserker Tribe but is defeated.

Other important characters

  • Alvin the Treacherous (voiced by Mark Hamill) – He was sent away from Berk for causing trouble. He tries to take over from Stoick. Later, he becomes an ally and helps Berk.
  • Heather (voiced by Mae Whitman) – A mysterious teenage girl. She first seems to be against Berk, but she is trying to save her parents. She later returns with her dragon, Windshear, a Razorwhip. Heather is also Dagur's long-lost sister. She eventually joins the Dragon Riders.
  • Dagur the Deranged (voiced by David Faustino) – The leader of the Berserker Tribe. He starts as a villain, obsessed with catching Toothless. Later, he becomes an ally and helps the Dragon Riders with his sister, Heather. Dagur becomes a Dragon Rider himself, first with Shattermaster, a Gronckle, and then with Sleuther, a Triple Stryke. He later marries Queen Mala.
  • Defenders of the Wing – A tribe of warriors who worship dragons. They are led by Queen Mala (voiced by Adelaide Kane). They live on a volcanic island and protect a huge dragon called the Eruptodon. They learn about riding dragons from the Dragon Riders. Mala later marries Dagur.
  • Wingmaidens – A tribe of only female warriors. They are led by Atali (voiced by Rose McIver). They care for baby Razorwhip dragons until they can live on their own.

Video game

A 3D online game called Dragons: Wild Skies was launched on August 27, 2012. You can play it on CartoonNetwork.com. In the game, players learn from Hiccup and train a Deadly Nadder dragon. Then, they can explore different islands in the Barbaric Archipelago.

You can choose to be a male or female Viking. To train a dragon, you need to feed it the right food and make the correct gestures. Players complete challenges to earn gold. This gold helps them buy tools and food for training more dragons. The game has six islands, each with a unique dragon to tame. More dragons and worlds were planned to be added over time.
