John Paul Alessio (born July 5, 1979) is a Canadian retired professional mixed martial artist. He competed in the Lightweight division for Bellator. John Alessio started his professional fighting career in 1998. He also fought in major organizations like the UFC, WEC, and PRIDE. Alessio was also a champion in King of the Cage, holding both the Welterweight and Superfight titles.

Early Life and Training
John Alessio grew up in Duncan, British Columbia. There, he started learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. When he was 19, he moved to San Jose, California. He wanted to become a professional fighter. Besides fighting, Alessio also won two national championships in BMX trick biking.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Fighting in the UFC
Alessio made his first appearance in the UFC when he was just 20 years old. This was at UFC 26 on June 9, 2000. He faced Pat Miletich in this fight. Alessio lost the match in the second round by an armbar submission.
Other Major Fights
After his first UFC run, Alessio fought in other big promotions. He signed a contract with EliteXC in 2008, but the company stopped operating before he could fight for them.
He later competed in Ultimate Glory. On October 16, 2010, Alessio fought Sergey Golyaev at Ultimate Glory 12. He won this fight in the second round using a kimura submission.
In January 2011, Alessio faced Siyar Bahadurzada in Belgium. This was a semifinal match in the United Glory welterweight tournament. Alessio was defeated by TKO in the first round.
Return to the UFC
John Alessio returned to the UFC on April 3, 2012. He stepped in to fight Mark Bocek at UFC 145. Alessio lost this fight by a unanimous decision from the judges.
He then fought Shane Roller at UFC 148 on July 7, 2012. Alessio lost this match by unanimous decision as well. After these two losses, Alessio was no longer part of the UFC.
Fighting in Bellator MMA
Alessio later joined Bellator MMA. He was set to fight Tim Radcliffe in June 2013. However, he had to pull out due to a staph infection. He then announced he would join Bellator's Lightweight tournament.
On May 9, 2014, Alessio fought Eric Wisely at Bellator 119. He won this fight by a unanimous decision.
His last fight was against David Rickels at Bellator 139 on June 26, 2015. The fight ended in a "no contest" in the first round. This happened because Rickels accidentally hit Alessio with an illegal knee, and Alessio could not continue.
Personal Life
John Alessio married Noelani Timas on June 9, 2010. They got married in Las Vegas, Nevada. John also has a son from before his marriage.
