In Bolivia, a city is a place with clear boundaries and its own recognized local government. According to the National Institute of Statistics of Bolivia (INE), Bolivia has 1,384 cities.
The most recent national count of people, called a census, happened on November 21, 2012. At that time, 53 cities in Bolivia had at least 10,000 people. These 53 cities were home to over 6.1 million people, which is about 61.4% of Bolivia's total population.

Overall, Bolivia's population grew by 21.1% from 2001 to 2012. Most of the 53 largest cities grew even more than that. However, three cities actually saw their populations shrink: La Paz (down 4.1%), Yacuíba (down 4.2%), and Santa Ana del Yacuma (down 5.4%).
Each department (like a state or region) in Bolivia has a capital city. Most of these capital cities are also the largest city in their department, except for the La Paz Department. The Santa Cruz Department has the most cities (18) with over 10,000 people. Meanwhile, Pando and Chuquisaca departments each have only one such city.
