Pound Puppies is an animated TV show for kids. It first aired on the Hub Network in the United States on October 10, 2010. The show also played in Canada on YTV and in the UK, Ireland, and Australia on Boomerang.

This series was made by Hasbro Studios. It's the second time the popular Pound Puppies toys were turned into a cartoon, following a show from 1986. The cartoon is made to be fun for children and their families. It features famous voice actors, like Betty White.

The Pound Puppies idea originally came from a company called Tonka. Now, Hasbro manages the brand. The first 7 episodes were animated by 9 Story Entertainment. Then, DHX Media/Vancouver took over starting with episode 8. The show's story style and music are sometimes compared to older TV shows like Hogan's Heroes and movies like Stalag 17 and The Great Escape.

In 2012, Pound Puppies won a CINE Golden Eagle Award. This award is given for high-quality TV shows and great storytelling. Also, the episode "I Never Barked for My Father" won the HUMANITAS Prize. This award celebrates excellent writing in children's TV animation.

The Story of the Pound Puppies

The Pound Puppies are a special group of dogs who live at Shelter 17. They have a secret, super-advanced base hidden underground. This base helps them find new homes for puppies and older dogs. Their main goal is simple: "A pup for every person, and a person for every pup."

The smartest dog, Strudel, and her squirrel helpers build all the cool gadgets. Even though the base is busy, the human staff at the pound never notice it! The show also hints that there are other Pound Puppies groups around the world.

There's also a similar group called the "Kennel Kittens." These cats at the Happy Valley shelter try to find homes for kittens. Sometimes, the Kennel Kittens accidentally cause trouble for the Pound Puppies' missions. The Pound Puppies also have a smaller, unofficial group called the "Super Secret Pup Club."

A common storyline in the show is the Pound Puppies helping dogs find loving families. They often face challenges along the way. When a dog finds a new home, the Pound Puppies give them a special dog tag shaped like a dog house. They say, "Once a pound puppy, always a pound puppy," as a farewell.

Meet the Characters

The Pound Puppies Team

These are the main dogs who lead the secret missions:

  • Lucky (voiced by Eric McCormack) – He's a mutt and the leader of the Pound Puppies. Lucky is smart and strict, and the other dogs usually follow his lead. He has a secret crush on Cookie, but he often gets interrupted when he tries to show it. Lucky was adopted once but chose to return to the pound to help other dogs. His catchphrase is "Go, dogs, go!"
  • Cookie (voiced by Yvette Nicole Brown) – A tough but kind Boxer. She is Lucky's second-in-command. Cookie also has a secret crush on Lucky. She doesn't like her stomach being touched. In one episode, she adopted a puppy named Cupcake.
  • Niblet (voiced by John DiMaggio) – A very large and sometimes clumsy Old English Sheepdog. He has a huge heart and loves peanut butter. Niblet is not the smartest, but he always means well. He is the only main dog without an owner.
  • Strudel (voiced by Alanna Ubach) – A genius German Dachshund. She invents all the amazing gadgets the Pound Puppies use. Squirrels often help her because she doesn't have thumbs. Strudel is very smart and sometimes a bit proud of it, but she cares deeply for her friends.
  • Squirt (voiced by Michael Rapaport) – A small, yellow Chihuahua. He's the most street-smart of the group and Niblet's best friend. Squirt has a New York accent. He can be negative sometimes, but he's always there for his team. Because he's so small, he often wears funny costumes for missions.
  • Rebound (voiced by Brooke Goldner) – Niblet's little sister. She was adopted and returned many times because she was so energetic. She finally found her forever home with Agatha McLeish. Rebound is part of the Super Secret Pup Club.
  • Cupcake (voiced by Cree Summer) – Cookie's adopted puppy daughter. She's smart and quick-thinking, but her puppy energy can sometimes get her into trouble. Cupcake is also a member of the Super Secret Pup Club.
  • Patches (voiced by Jessica DiCicco) – A Dalmatian puppy. He looks up to the Pound Puppies, especially Lucky. Patches is the leader and creator of the Super Secret Pup Club.

Human Friends and Foes

  • Leonard McLeish (voiced by René Auberjonois) – The grumpy manager of Shelter 17. He doesn't like his job and has no idea about the Pound Puppies' secret operations. However, he secretly loves dogs and eventually adopts his own dog, Ralph.
  • Olaf Hugglesbjork (voiced by M. Emmet Walsh) – The kind and quirky caretaker of Shelter 17. He helps people find pets to adopt. Like McLeish, he doesn't know about the secret dog activities.
  • Agatha McLeish (voiced by Betty White) – Leonard McLeish's mother. She used to dislike dogs until she adopted Rebound, whom she loves very much.
  • Dot Henderson (voiced by Grey DeLisle) – A young, energetic girl who adopts Lucky. She is the only human who knows that the dogs can talk.

Other Important Characters

  • Dolly (voiced by E. G. Daily) – Also known as "the General," she is a pink poodle and a legendary member of the Pound Puppies network.
  • Ralph (voiced by Fred Stoller) – A lazy Labrador Retriever who loves chewing shoes. He was adopted by Leonard McLeish.
  • Pepper (voiced by Jennifer Carpenter) – A young puppy who becomes a police dog. She is very serious about her police training.
  • Agent Ping (voiced by Lauren Tom) – An orange-furred Akita Inu who works for the Pound Puppies in China.

The Kennel Kittens

This is a group of cats who help find homes for kittens. Sometimes, their goals clash with the Pound Puppies.

  • Ace (voiced by Eric McCormack) – The leader of Shelter 71, he's like the cat version of Lucky.
  • Fluffy (voiced by Yvette Nicole Brown) – A Ragamuffin and the cat version of Cookie. She's second-in-command of Shelter 71.
  • Tiny (voiced by John DiMaggio) – A Maine Coon and the cat version of Niblet.
  • Squeak (voiced by Michael Rapaport) – A Siamese cat and the cat version of Squirt.
  • Kugel (voiced by Alanna Ubach) – A Munchkin cat and the cat version of Strudel.
