Rick John Roufus, born on June 3, 1966, is a famous American kickboxer. He also competed professionally in boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). Rick was a very successful fighter, winning many world championships in different weight classes.

He held titles from major kickboxing groups like PKA, IKF, ISKA, FFKA, and KICK. Rick was known for his strong boxing punches and powerful kicks. After retiring from fighting, he became the Global Director of Fighter Development for PKA Worldwide. In 2012, he was added to the World Kickboxing League Hall of Fame.

Rick Roufus's Fighting Journey

Early Life and Kickboxing Start

Rick Roufus started learning martial arts when he was just 5 years old. His father, Pat J. Roufus, taught him taekwondo. His father was a well-known referee in kickboxing. Rick quickly became good at karate competitions.

He began his professional kickboxing career in May 1985. In his first fight, he won against U.C. Owens.

Winning His First World Title

In April 1987, Rick fought John Moncayo for the KICK world title in the super middleweight division. Rick won by knocking out Moncayo in the seventh round. This was his first world title.

Learning New Kicks

Early in his career, Rick fought in "full contact" kickboxing. In this style, leg kicks, elbow strikes, and knee attacks were not allowed. On November 5, 1988, he faced Changpuek Kiatsongrit in a fight with different rules. Rick had a perfect record of 28 wins before this fight.

He knocked Changpuek down twice in the first round. However, Rick found out on the day of the fight that leg kicks would be allowed. He was not ready for them. Changpuek used many low kicks, and Rick lost the fight in the fifth round. After this, Rick and his brother learned more about kicking techniques from Thai experts.

Big Fights and Championships

On June 19, 1991, Rick fought Marek Piotrowski again. Piotrowski had beaten him before. This time, Rick won by a strong knockout in the second round. He won the ISKA Full Contact Light Heavyweight World title.

On December 20, 1991, Rick defended his ISKA title against Rob Kaman. Rick was first declared the winner, but the fight was later changed to "no contest." This happened because Kaman's team said the fourth round ended too early. They fought again in February 1994 in Paris, France. Rick won that fight by knockout in the second round.

On January 22, 1994, Rick won the IKF Pro Full Contact Rules Light Heavyweight World Title. He defeated Michael McDonald by knockout in the first round. A few months later, on March 26, 1994, he defended his PKC Full Contact World Light Heavyweight title against Jean-Yves Thériault in Canada. Rick won by a unanimous decision.

Later in 1994, he fought Ernesto Hoost in Paris. Rick was doing well for the first 10 rounds. But Hoost landed a powerful high kick in round 11, and Rick lost by knockout.

Boxing Career

After his kickboxing success, Rick tried professional boxing. He did well but never fought for a world championship in boxing. In August 1996, he won his first and only boxing title. He knocked out Sean McClain to become the WBC Continental Americas Cruiserweight Champion.

Return to Kickboxing and MMA

After some losses in boxing, Rick returned to kickboxing. He won the K-1 USA tournament on August 17, 1998. He quickly defeated Pedro Fernandez and Jerome Turcan.

On May 15, 1999, Rick won the IKF Pro International Rules Heavyweight World title. He beat Stan Longinidis when Longinidis had to stop fighting due to a broken foot.

In February 2008, Rick made his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut. He lost his first MMA fight to Maurice Smith. In March 2008, he won his second MMA fight against Mike Buell. Rick's MMA record ended with four wins and six losses.

In 2002, Rick competed in the K-1 USA Las Vegas tournament. He won his first two fights. In the final, he faced Michael McDonald again. Rick had injured his knee in an earlier fight that night. He fought carefully because of the injury. The fight was very close and ended in a draw. Rick had to withdraw from the extra round due to his injury, giving McDonald the win.

On October 22, 2011, Rick was awarded the IKF Legends Title. His opponent, Mighty Mo, could not pass his physical exam. Rick and Mighty Mo finally fought on September 8, 2012, and Rick won. His last professional fight was in October 2012, at the age of 46. He fought James Wilson, who was 25, and the match ended in a draw.

Family Life

Rick is the older brother of Duke Roufus. Duke is also a kickboxer and teaches Muay Thai and mixed martial arts.
