Club History
The club started in 1946 as Dynamo. Later, its name changed to Neftyanik in 1948 and then to Terek in 1958. On June 7, 2017, the team was renamed Akhmat. This new name honors Akhmad Kadyrov, who was a former leader of the Chechen Republic.
In the 1990s, the club had to stop playing for a while. This was because of a difficult period in Chechnya. From the 1990s until 2007, the team played its home games in Pyatigorsk. This is a nearby city in Stavropol Krai.
Big Wins and European Games
Akhmat Grozny has had some great moments. They won the Russian Cup in 2004. They beat Krylya Sovetov Samara in the final match. In the same year, they also won the Russian First Division.
Winning the Russian Cup allowed them to play in the UEFA Cup. They won against the Polish team Lech Poznań in the qualification round. However, they later lost to the Swiss team FC Basel in the first round. In 2005, they played in the Russian Premier League but were moved down to a lower league. They worked hard and returned to the Premier League in 2007.
Playing in Grozny
Before the 2008 season, the team was allowed to play their home games in Grozny again. This was a big step for the club. They signed three players from Romania in July 2008. These players were Andrei Margaritescu, Florentin Petre, and Daniel Pancu. The team finished 12th in the Russian Premier League in 2010.
A new stadium, the Akhmat-Arena, was built for the club. It opened on May 20, 2011. Akhmat Grozny won their first game there against Anzhi Makhachkala.
Coaches and Changes
Over the years, many coaches have led the team. In January 2011, famous Dutch player Ruud Gullit became the manager. But he was let go in June 2011 because of poor results.
Later, Oleg Kononov resigned as manager in October 2017. Mikhail Galaktionov took over for a short time. He then became the permanent manager in December 2017. In September 2019, Rashid Rakhimov left, and Igor Shalimov became the new coach. Andrei Talalayev took over from Shalimov in July 2020.
In September 2022, Andrei Talalayev left his role. Yury Nagaytsev was a temporary coach. Then, Sergei Tashuyev became the new permanent Head Coach on September 22, 2022.
In the 2024–25 season, Akhmat finished 14th in the Russian Premier League. They had to play in special games to stay in the league. Akhmat won against Ural Yekaterinburg in these play-offs. This means they will continue to play in the Premier League.
Stadium Information
For many years, from the 1990s until 2007, Akhmat Grozny played their home games at the Central Stadium in Pyatigorsk. After that, they moved to the Sultan Bilimkhanov Stadium. They played there until their new stadium, the Akhmat-Arena, opened on May 20, 2011.
