Major Events of 1362
A Giant Storm Hits Europe
- On January 16, a massive storm known as the "Grote Mandrenke" hit parts of Europe. This was a huge storm tide, which means the sea level rose very high because of strong winds.
- The storm caused a lot of damage in places like Holland, England, Germany, and Denmark. It even completely destroyed the city of Rungholt in Nordfriesland, Germany.
English Becomes England's Official Language
- For a long time, French had been the main language used in official business in England. This was because of the Norman Conquest in 1066, when French-speaking Normans took over England.
- But in 1362, under King Edward III, English officially replaced French as the national language. This was a big step for the English language and culture.
New Pope Chosen
- On September 28, a new leader was chosen for the Catholic Church. Pope Urban V became the 200th pope, taking over from Pope Innocent VI.
Battles and Changing Borders
- Louis I of Hungary, the King of Hungary, fought against Ivan Sratsimir of Bulgaria. Louis won the battle and captured Ivan. He then took control of northern Bulgaria, making his kingdom bigger in the Balkans.
- The Ottomans were a powerful group of Turks who were expanding their territory. In 1362, they captured two important cities, Philippopolis and Adrianopole (which is now called Edirne), from the Byzantine Empire.
- The Byzantine Empire, which was once very large, became much smaller. It was mostly just the city of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) left under their control.
- In a naval battle, King Valdemar Atterdag of Denmark defeated the Hanseatic League off the coast of Helsingborg. The Hanseatic League was a powerful group of trading cities in northern Europe.
- In Kashmir, a new leader named Shahabuddin became the Sultan. He took over from his brother, Alauddin Ali Sher.
- In Armenia, Constantine VI became the new King, following his cousin, Constantine V.
- The Grand Duke of Lithuania, Algirdas, led his forces to a big victory. He defeated the Tatars (a group of Mongols) at a place called the Blue Waters, near the Southern Bug river.
