List of U.S. cities with large Black populations facts for kids
This article lists U.S. cities with a large Black population. It includes cities and towns that have more than 100,000 people. Also, at least 30% of their residents must be Black or African American. The information comes from the 2020 United States Census.
In 2020, about 47.5 million Americans identified as Black. This means they were 14.2% of the total U.S. population. The states with the most Black Americans were Texas, Florida, Georgia, New York, and California.
However, the places with the highest percentages of Black residents were a bit different. The District of Columbia had the highest percentage (44.17%). Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, and Maryland also had very high percentages.
The U.S. has 342 cities with over 100,000 people. Out of these, 19 cities had a majority of Black residents. Another 46 cities had between 30% and 50% Black residents. Georgia and Louisiana each had four cities with a Black majority. Alabama had three such cities. Other states like Florida, Ohio, and Michigan each had one.
In 2020, the largest cities with a Black majority were Detroit, Michigan, and Memphis, Tennessee. Baltimore, Maryland, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Cleveland, Ohio, also had large Black populations.

The list below shows cities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Each city has over 100,000 people. Also, more than 30% of their population is Black, according to the 2020 Census. The table shows the city's total population. It also shows the number and percentage of Black people in that city. You can sort the table by clicking on the column headers.
Cities where the percentage of people who are only Black is less than 30% are italicized. However, when counting people who are Black and also another race, these cities still have over 30% Black residents.
