The Waikato region in New Zealand's North Island is home to many different schools. You'll find small primary schools in the countryside, bigger primary and secondary schools in towns, and even more schools in the city of Hamilton.
In New Zealand, kids usually start school in Year 1 when they are five years old. The last year of high school is Year 13. Sometimes, you might see "Year 14" or "Year 15" – these are for adult learning places, not regular schools for kids.
There are a few types of schools in New Zealand:
- State schools are paid for by the government. This means New Zealand and Australian citizens don't have to pay tuition fees. However, schools might ask for a donation to help with extra costs.
- State integrated schools used to be private schools, often with a special religious or philosophical focus. They've joined the state system, so the government helps fund them. But, they can still ask for "attendance dues" to help pay for their buildings, which the government doesn't own. Like state schools, they don't charge tuition fees for local students, but they might ask for donations.
- Private schools charge fees for students to attend. Both state and state integrated schools also charge fees for students from other countries.
You might see something called a "socioeconomic decile" for schools. This number, from 1 to 10, gives an idea of the wealth of the area where the school's students live. A decile of 1 means the school is in an area with lower income, while a decile of 10 means it's in a wealthier area. These numbers help the Ministry of Education decide how much funding a school gets. The decile ratings mentioned here were last updated using information from the 2006 Census. The number of students at each school (the "roll") changes often. The numbers here are from November 2012. Each school's Ministry of Education number links to its page on the Education Counts website.
