Toy Story 5 is an American animated comedy-drama film released in 2026. The famous studio Pixar Animation Studios created the movie for Walt Disney Pictures. Filmmaker Andrew Stanton directed the story, and he wrote it together with Kenna Harris. Famous actors returned to provide voices for the classic characters, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack. Other exciting voices joined the cast, such as Conan O'Brien, Scarlett Spears, Greta Lee, Shelby Rabara, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Craig Robinson. The story takes place two years after the events of Toy Story 4. In this adventure, Jessie, Woody, and Buzz Lightyear face a modern challenge. Bonnie receives a new electronic tablet named Lilypad, which changes how she plays.

The creators began making the film in early 2023. Andrew Stanton, who helped write the earlier movies in the Toy Story series, returned as the director. Famous composer Randy Newman wrote the musical score, marking his tenth project with Pixar. Pop music star Taylor Swift also wrote an original song titled "I Knew It, I Knew You". The movie cost $250 million to make, which placed it among the most expensive animated films ever produced.

The film premiered in Los Angeles in early June 2026 before arriving in cinemas across North America. It became a huge box office success, earning more than $1.148 billion globally. This achievement made it the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 and the highest-earning film in the entire franchise. Movie critics and audiences gave it warm reviews, praising its artistic style, funny moments, and meaningful message about growing up alongside technology.

Exciting Plot of Toy Story 5

The journey begins out on the open sea, where a shipping container crashes near a lonely island. Inside this container is a brand-new shipment of high-tech Buzz Lightyear action figures. These toys are stuck in demo mode, so they genuinely believe they are real space rangers. Looking up into the night sky, they spot Polaris, the North Star and decide to march across the world to find their command base.

Back at home, eight-year-old Bonnie receives an electronic present from her parents. It is a cute, green tablet called Lilypad, or "Lily" for short. Her parents hope this little computer will help Bonnie connect with schoolmates. Bonnie quickly becomes glued to Lily's bright screen and games, leaving her classic toys sitting inside the closet. Jessie, who has become the leader of the toy group, worries about Bonnie's happiness. She talks with Lily and explains that Bonnie needs genuine, real-world friends. Wanting to help, Lily connects to social media and sends an online friend request to Chelsea, a girl in Bonnie's class.

Feeling nervous about Bonnie losing interest in her old toys, Jessie uses an old walkie-talkie to reach out to Woody. Woody has spent the past two years traveling with Bo Peep to help lost toys find loving families. Hearing Jessie's worry, Woody decides to visit Bonnie's house to support his old friends. Chelsea invites Bonnie over for a fun weekend sleepover. Hoping to join the fun, Jessie and Bullseye secretly hide inside Bonnie's travel bag. Bonnie also packs Lily. At the sleepover, Chelsea and her friends laugh at Bonnie for still playing with cowgirl toys. Feeling embarrassed, Bonnie asks her dad to drive the toys back home.

Jessie and Bullseye manage to sneak out of the car, but they get lost on the street. A kind elderly couple spots them on the sidewalk. Looking closely, the couple spots a faint childhood address marked under Jessie's leather chaps. They recognize the name and drive the toys out to a countryside farmhouse that once belonged to Jessie's original owner, Emily.

Jessie explores the old backyard and discovers a charming Wendy house filled with forgotten playthings. Among these toys is a funny electronic helper named Smarty Pants. Searching for Bullseye, Jessie also meets an electronic GPS navigation friend named Atlas and an energetic toy camera named Snappy. These clever gadgets explain that a new family named the Manoukians now lives on the farm. Their young daughter, Blaze, loves playing pretend outside. Jessie joins Blaze for an afternoon of outdoor adventures, which reminds Jessie how much joy imaginative games can bring. She dreams of introducing Blaze to Bonnie so they can share toys together.

Meanwhile, Woody arrives back at Bonnie's bedroom. He and the classic toys ask Lily where Jessie disappeared to. Lily thinks traditional toys are distracting Bonnie from making friends at school, so she tricks Bonnie's father into packing the toys away in attic bins. Woody and Buzz barely escape the room. Far away at the farm, Jessie teams up with the electronic gadgets to take a digital picture of herself. They send the photo across the internet to Bonnie, hoping to invite her to the farm. At the same time, the lost group of space ranger toys spots the photo online. Seeing Jessie's shiny sheriff star, they mistake her for the commander of their space fleet.

Woody and Buzz ride along in Bonnie's family car as they travel toward the countryside. While riding in the back seat, Bonnie looks down at an online group chat on her phone. The school girls are being mean, using unkind online messages to tease Bonnie about the toy picture. Bonnie feels hurt and embarrassed by the teasing. When they arrive at the farm, Bonnie pushes away the offer to take Jessie back, saying she does not want toys anymore.

The army of space rangers reaches the farm and surrounds Woody, thinking he is an intruder. Buzz steps forward and speaks to the troop, clearing up the misunderstanding. Heartbroken by Bonnie's reaction, Jessie sits quietly under an old oak tree where Emily used to play. While sitting in the grass, she uncovers a buried metal time capsule. Inside, Jessie finds vintage items from the late twentieth century, along with family photos of an adult Emily. One picture shows Emily holding her own baby daughter, whom she lovingly named Jessie. Realizing that the love she gave Emily lasted an entire lifetime, Jessie feels hopeful again.

Jessie learns that Lily felt terrible about causing Bonnie pain and hopped aboard a charity donation truck to disappear. Working together, the toys, the high-tech gadgets, and the troop of space rangers chase down the vehicle. Jessie catches up to the truck and convinces Lily that screen devices and toys can work as a team. Buzz shares his warm feelings with Jessie, and the two share a sweet kiss.

The toys and gadgets team up to set up a brand-new play date between Bonnie and Blaze. When the two girls sit down together, they discover a shared love for imaginative games and animal figures. Bonnie and Blaze fill the room with laughter, pretending to hold a happy toy wedding for Jessie and Buzz. Woody watches from the porch window with a proud smile, knowing Bonnie is happy, before heading back to the carnival to join Bo Peep. Out on a nearby playground, each of the lost space ranger figures gets adopted by enthusiastic schoolchildren.

Wonderful Voice Cast

  • Tom Hanks voices Woody, the loyal pull-string cowboy doll who has spent years helping other toys find homes.
  • Tim Allen performs two major roles:
    • Buzz Lightyear, the brave space ranger action figure who loves Jessie.
    • The Multi-Buzz, a squad of fifty high-tech action figures marching in demo mode.
  • Joan Cusack provides the voice for Jessie, the energetic cowgirl who guides Bonnie's toy collection.
  • Greta Lee voices Lilypad ("Lily"), a bright green tablet computer loaded with modern games and internet apps.
  • Conan O'Brien plays Smarty Pants, a goofy electronic speaker toy designed to help toddlers learn good habits.

Many beloved performers returned to voice familiar characters. Annie Potts returned as the brave shepherdess Bo Peep, while Keanu Reeves voiced the Canadian stunt toy Duke Caboom. Bonnie Hunt played the cloth doll Dolly, Kristen Schaal voiced the plastic dinosaur Trixie, and Tony Hale returned as the handcrafted spork Forky. Wallace Shawn voiced the nervous dinosaur Rex, Blake Clark played the bendable Slinky Dog, and John Ratzenberger voiced the witty piggy bank Hamm. Melissa Villaseñor voiced the knife figure Karen Beverly. Bonnie's parents were voiced again by Lori Alan as Mrs. Anderson and Jay Hernandez as Mr. Anderson. Director Andrew Stanton made a surprise appearance as the voice of the villainous Emperor Zurg, a role he first performed in Toy Story 2.

Several classic characters received new voice performers to honor actors who had passed away. Jeff Bergman voiced Mr. Potato Head, taking over for Don Rickles. Anna Vocino voiced Mrs. Potato Head, succeeding Estelle Harris. John Hopkins provided the theatrical voice of the hedgehog Mr. Pricklepants, following earlier work by Timothy Dalton and Robin Atkin Downes in Forky Asks a Question. Ernie Hudson voiced the brave toy soldier Combat Carl, stepping in for Carl Weathers.

Guest artists voiced several hidden toys found in the garden. Jerome Ranft, singer Tyla, and musician Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio voiced a decorative garden gnome, an inflatable bird, and a toy pizza slice. In the United Kingdom version, radio hosts Jordan North and Siân Welby provided the voices for the gnome and the bird. In Australia, electronic music producer Fisher gave his voice to the garden gnome.

Movie Production and Animation

Developing the Story

After completing the fourth movie in 2019, producer Mark Nielsen shared that Pixar planned to spend time creating brand-new original stories. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2019, star Tom Hanks mentioned that the fourth movie felt like a natural ending for Woody. He explained that fellow actor Tim Allen had shared an emotional goodbye during recording. Even so, the creative team always leaves the door open for strong story ideas that explore meaningful feelings.

In February 2023, Disney leader Bob Iger announced that work on a fifth movie had officially begun. This project marked the first main franchise entry made without studio founder John Lasseter, who departed the company in 2018. Creative director Pete Docter revealed in 2023 that Woody would take part in the adventure. Soon after, Pixar announced that veteran storyteller Andrew Stanton would direct the film, with Kenna Harris serving as co-director. Stanton had worked on the scripts of every previous entry in the series. At the giant D23 fan convention in 2024, the team shared that the movie would explore how toys handle competition from modern electronic screens.

Groundbreaking Animation Tools

Toy Story 5 painterly playtime scene
The playtime sequences are presented in a stylized pastel art style to reflect that of Bonnie's imagination.

To bring the vibrant world to life, computer artists utilized an advanced rendering program called RenderMan XPU. This powerful engine uses both computer processors (CPUs) and graphics chips (GPUs) at the same exact time. This breakthrough allowed artists to produce lighting previews nine times faster than older systems could manage. The technical team also expanded a lighting tool called Luna inside their Presto animation program. Luna was first tested during the production of the Pixar movie Hoppers. With Luna, artists could adjust the brightness of the sun in one frame, and the computer would instantly update hundreds of connected camera angles.

Creating the horse character named Daffodil required more than twelve months of engineering. Animators brought a living horse onto the studio grounds in California to observe its muscle movements up close. The engineers created a system known as invertible rigging. Studio technical officer Steve May noted that this method allowed animators to grab any joint on a digital figure, such as a hoof or a shoulder, and naturally bend the entire limb without having to set up dozens of individual dials.

The movie also introduced a fresh visual style for scenes where the children play pretend. Rather than using realistic backgrounds, these playful daydreams look like living pastel paintings. Effects supervisor Ravindra Dwivedi explained to entertainment reporters at IGN that Bonnie's unique imagination gave the team a chance to experiment with colorful, painterly brush strokes. Visual supervisor Thomas Jordan also developed brand-new digital tools to style Blaze's textured curls. Co-director Kenna Harris worked closely with Black artists on the team to ensure Blaze's hair looked natural in every outdoor lighting condition. Industry magazine Variety confirmed that making the film cost approximately $250 million.

Assembling the Voice Cast

Voice recording started soon after the studio announced the film. Tim Allen announced his return as Buzz Lightyear right away, and brother Jim Hanks confirmed that Tom Hanks would gladly voice Woody once again. Allen began reading his lines in late 2024, telling reporters that the script contained wonderful emotional depth. Early reports hinted that comedy star Anna Faris had joined the cast, though she later shared that she was not part of the project.

In April 2025, actor Ernie Hudson took on the part of Combat Carl. Tom Hanks began recording his voice sessions that same spring. Television host Conan O'Brien joined the cast in May to portray Smarty Pants, while Joan Cusack stepped up to record major emotional moments for Jessie. Tony Hale stepped into the studio during July to perform new lines for Forky. By late autumn, filmmakers officially revealed that award-winning actress Greta Lee had performed the voice of the tablet Lilypad. Allen finished his final recording sessions on November 21, 2025.

Meaningful Themes for Modern Kids

The main theme of the story focuses on how modern children interact with digital technology, such as pocket phones and touchscreen tablets. In the story, Jessie feels worried because Bonnie spends hours tapping on a screen instead of inventing adventures with traditional dolls. Director Stanton described the concept as an honest look at childhood habits today. The movie explores the idea of screen time and asks how classic toys can stay valuable when digital games compete for attention. In the end, the story shows that electronic tools and classic toys do not have to be enemies; both can inspire creativity when balanced with care.

Catchy Music and Soundtrack

Legendary songwriter Randy Newman returned to compose the instrumental music for the film. Newman had previously composed the soundtracks for all four earlier franchise movies, creating famous tunes that defined the characters.

The soundtrack also featured a huge pop music release. Global superstar Taylor Swift joined the project by writing and producing an original pop ballad titled "I Knew It, I Knew You" alongside songwriter Jack Antonoff. Swift wrote the song after watching an early work-in-progress screening of the movie. She shared the finished tune with studio leaders Bob Iger and Tom MacDougall at Walt Disney Music. The song climbed straight to the number one spot on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became the first song from a Pixar film to reach the top of that music chart, and it marked Swift's fifteenth number-one song.

Theatrical Release and Fun Marketing

The film held its sparkling red-carpet premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on June 9, 2026. Ten days later, on June 19, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released the movie in 4,425 cinemas across the United States and Canada. The Motion Picture Association gave the film a PG rating because of mild rude humor and emotional scenes, making it the second franchise title after Lightyear to carry that rating.

The film's promotional campaign began a year earlier. Filmmakers previewed the opening action scene at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France during June 2025. Pete Docter later appeared at the Destination D23 fan event, introducing the storyline as "Toy meets Tech". When the studio posted the first teaser trailer online in November 2025, curious fans watched it more than 142 million times within a single day. The team also hosted a European celebration at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square theater in London.

Car manufacturer Porsche joined the celebration by designing three unique sports cars based on the Porsche 911. Each custom car featured paint schemes and interior designs matching Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie. The studio placed these special cars up for charity auction, donating all the money raised to youth organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the American Red Cross, and the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Families who preferred watching movies at home were able to purchase digital copies through Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment in August 2026. Physical home editions on Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD arrived in retail stores during late September 2026. The movie also made its official streaming service premiere on Disney+ on September 23, 2026.

Future Adventures

During interviews at the Hollywood premiere, director Andrew Stanton spoke about what lies ahead for the toy family. He reflected that Toy Story 3 completed the story of growing up alongside Andy, while the recent adventures opened up a fresh story path centered on Bonnie. Stanton teased that the filmmakers have built a complete, heartwarming three-part story arc focused on Bonnie and her colorful collection of toys.
