A New King for Scotland
On November 17, 1292, John Balliol became the new King of Scotland. He was chosen by King Edward I of England from 13 people who wanted the job. However, King Edward I treated John Balliol like a "puppet ruler." This means John had to do what Edward wanted. Scotland was also treated as a "vassal state," which meant it was under England's control. This situation later led to the famous Wars of Scottish Independence, which started in 1296.
