She has won two major doubles titles at the US Open in 2023 and 2025, playing with her partner Gabriela Dabrowski.

Erin was the second woman from New Zealand to win a major tennis title in the modern era. She represents New Zealand in big tournaments like the BJK Cup. Before 2017, she played for Canada.

Erin Routliffe's Journey in Tennis

Early Life and Junior Success

Erin Routliffe was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on April 11, 1995. Her parents were on a sailing trip around the world. They lived in New Zealand for four years before moving back to Canada. Erin has two sisters, Tara and Tess. Her sister Tess is a well-known para-swimmer.

Erin started playing tennis at a young age. She trained at the National Training Centre in Montreal from 2011 to 2013. She was a very good junior player, reaching a high rank of No. 17 in the world by January 2013. During her junior years, she won several doubles and singles titles in tournaments in Canada and France. She even reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the junior Wimbledon and US Open.

College Tennis and Early Professional Steps

After her junior career, Erin went to the University of Alabama in September 2013. She studied public relations and was a key player on the university's tennis team. She achieved great success in college tennis.

Erin became a two-time NCAA doubles champion with her partner Maya Jansen. They won these titles in 2014 and 2015. This was a huge achievement in college sports! In 2016, she reached her first professional singles final in Winnipeg, Canada. She also won her first professional doubles title in Charleston, South Carolina, with Andie Daniell.

Representing New Zealand and Building Experience

In June 2017, Erin decided to represent New Zealand, the country where she was born. She played her first matches for New Zealand in the Fed Cup (now called the Billie Jean King Cup) in July 2017. She quickly showed her talent, winning her debut match easily.

Over the next few years, Erin continued to gain experience in professional tournaments. She won several doubles titles on the ITF Circuit, often partnering with Alexa Guarachi and Victoria Rodríguez. In 2018, she made her debut on the main WTA Tour at the Washington Open, reaching the doubles final. She also qualified for Wimbledon that year, a big step in her career.

Breaking Through in Doubles

Erin's career really started to take off in the early 2020s. In 2021, she won her first WTA Tour doubles title at the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy with Kimberley Zimmermann. This was a major milestone!

In 2022, she continued to climb the ranks in doubles. She reached the semifinals of the Adelaide International 2 and made it to the quarterfinals of big WTA 1000 tournaments like the Qatar Ladies Open and the Miami Open. She also reached two more finals at WTA 500 and WTA 250 events. At the Wimbledon Championships, she reached the quarterfinals, which was her best result at a major tournament at that time. She also won the Washington Open with Jessica Pegula and entered the top 30 in the world for doubles.

Grand Slam Victories and World No. 1

The year 2023 was incredible for Erin. She made her debut in a WTA Tour singles main draw in Auckland. More importantly, she won her third doubles title at the 2023 ATX Open with Aldila Sutjiadi.

Then came the US Open. Partnering with Gabriela Dabrowski, Erin made it all the way to the final! They defeated strong teams to win the US Open title, which was Erin's first Grand Slam victory. This amazing win helped her enter the top 20 in doubles rankings. After this, they reached their first WTA 1000 final at the Guadalajara Open and won the Zhengzhou Open. Their success qualified them for the prestigious 2023 WTA Finals, where Erin became the first New Zealander to compete. She reached the semifinals and climbed to world No. 11.

In 2024, Erin continued her fantastic form. She reached another WTA 1000 final at the Miami Open with Gabriela Dabrowski. She also reached the final of the Italian Open with Coco Gauff, reaching a new career-high ranking of world No. 3. In June, she won her sixth title at the Nottingham Open on grass courts, which pushed her to world No. 2.

A huge moment came at Wimbledon, where she and Dabrowski reached the final. Although they didn't win, this achievement made Erin the world No. 1 doubles player on July 15, 2024! Later that year, she and Dabrowski won the WTA Finals, making Erin the first New Zealander to win this important year-end event.

The success continued into 2025. Erin and Dabrowski reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. She won the Charleston Open with Jeļena Ostapenko and the Stuttgart Open with Dabrowski. In August, they won their first WTA 1000 title together at the Cincinnati Open. The biggest highlight of 2025 was when Erin and Gabriela Dabrowski secured their second US Open title, showing their incredible teamwork and skill.
