Erin Hope Routliffe, born on April 11, 1995, is a professional tennis player from New Zealand. She mostly plays in doubles matches. Before representing New Zealand, she played for Canada.

One of her biggest achievements was becoming the world No. 1 in doubles on July 15, 2024. She also won a major doubles championship at the 2023 US Open with her partner, Gabriela Dabrowski. This made her the second New Zealander woman to win a major title in the modern tennis era.

Erin also had a great junior career, reaching a high rank of No. 17 among young players in 2013. She went to the University of Alabama and played on their tennis team. She even won the NCAA college doubles championship twice in 2014 and 2015.

About Erin's Life

Erin Routliffe was born in New Zealand while her parents were on a sailing trip around the world. They lived there for four years before moving back to Canada. Erin has two sisters, Tara and Tess. Tess is a well-known para-swimmer. Both of Erin's sisters were also born in Auckland. Erin moved to Montreal in 2011 to train at a special tennis center until 2013.

Erin's Tennis Journey

Starting Out (2010–2011)

In October 2010, Erin won a doubles title at a junior tournament in Canada. A year later, she won her first junior singles title at the same event. She also reached the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles at a bigger tournament in Saguenay, Canada.

Playing as a Junior (2012)

In April 2012, Erin won both singles and doubles titles at a tournament in France. She reached the doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon as a junior player. Later that year, she played in the qualifying rounds of the Rogers Cup, a big tournament. She also won a doubles title in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her partner Carol Zhao.

More Junior Success (2013)

Erin reached the doubles quarterfinals at the Australian Open as a junior. In February, she played in her first professional doubles final in Australia. In August, she won a gold medal in singles at the Canada Summer Games.

College Tennis and Beyond (2014–2015)

In 2014, Erin and Carol Zhao reached the semifinals and a final at professional tournaments in Canada. In 2015, Erin reached another doubles final in Granby, Canada, with Laura Robson. She also played in the main draw of the US Open doubles with Maya Jansen after winning a special playoff.

First Professional Titles (2016–2017)

In July 2016, Erin reached her first professional singles final in Winnipeg, Canada. In October, she won her first professional doubles title in South Carolina. In June 2017, Erin started representing New Zealand, the country where she was born. She played her first matches for New Zealand in the Fed Cup (now called Billie Jean King Cup). She won her second doubles title in Toronto with Alexa Guarachi.

Big Steps Forward (2018)

In January 2018, Erin won two more doubles titles in Egypt with Jade Lewis. She also won a singles title there. She continued to win many doubles titles throughout 2018 with different partners, including Alexa Guarachi and Victoria Rodríguez. She even played in her first WTA Tour event, reaching the final of the Washington Open with Alexa Guarachi. She also played at Wimbledon for the first time in the main draw.

More Doubles Finals (2019–2020)

In 2019, Erin continued to play in many doubles tournaments. She won a big title in Bonita Springs, USA, with Alexa Guarachi. She also reached the final of the Vancouver Open with Naomi Broady. In 2020, she won a doubles title in Hamilton, New Zealand, with Emily Fanning. She also reached several other doubles finals.

First WTA Tour Title (2021)

In 2021, Erin won her first WTA Tour doubles title at the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy. Her partner was Kimberley Zimmermann. This was a big moment in her career. She also reached the third round of the US Open doubles.

Breaking into the Top 30 (2022)

In 2022, Erin and her partner Alicja Rosolska had a great year. They reached the semifinals of a tournament in Adelaide and the quarterfinals at big WTA 1000 events in Qatar and Miami. They also reached two more finals. At the French Open, she reached the third round. At Wimbledon, she made it to the quarterfinals, which was her best result at a major tournament at that time. In August 2022, she entered the top 30 doubles players in the world. She also won a title in Washington with Jessica Pegula.

US Open Champions! (2023)

Erin made her first singles main-draw appearance on the WTA Tour in Auckland. In March, she won her third doubles title with Aldila Sutjiadi at the 2023 ATX Open.

The biggest highlight of 2023 was winning the US Open doubles title with her new partner, Gabriela Dabrowski. They were seeded 16th and beat many strong teams, including the defending champions in the final. This was Erin's first Grand Slam title, and it helped her enter the top 20 doubles players. They also reached their first WTA 1000 final in Guadalajara and won the Zhengzhou Open. Their success qualified them for the 2023 WTA Finals, a special year-end tournament for the best players. Erin became the first New Zealander to play in this event and reached the semifinals.

World No. 1 and WTA Finals Champion (2024)

In 2024, Erin continued her amazing run. She reached another WTA 1000 final at the Miami Open with Gabriela Dabrowski. She also reached the final of the Italian Open with Coco Gauff, which helped her reach a new career-high ranking of world No. 3.

In June, she won her sixth title with Gabriela Dabrowski at the 2024 Nottingham Open, her first title on grass courts. This win moved her to world No. 2. At Wimbledon, she and Dabrowski reached the final. After Wimbledon, on July 15, Erin Routliffe officially became the world No. 1 doubles player! She also reached the mixed doubles semifinals at Wimbledon with Michael Venus.

To cap off an incredible year, Erin and Gabriela Dabrowski won the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. They went undefeated in their group and beat strong opponents in the semifinals and final. This made Erin the first New Zealander to win a WTA Finals title.

Continuing Success (2025)

In 2025, Erin and Gabriela Dabrowski reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. In April, Erin won the doubles title at the Charleston Open with Jeļena Ostapenko. Later that month, she reunited with Gabriela Dabrowski and won the doubles title at the Stuttgart Open.
