Erin Hope Routliffe (born 11 April 1995) is a professional tennis player from New Zealand. She used to play for Canada. On 15 July 2024, she became the world's number one doubles player.
Erin won a huge doubles title at the 2023 US Open. She partnered with Gabriela Dabrowski for this big win. She is only the second New Zealand woman to win a major title in the modern era of tennis. Before turning professional, Erin won two NCAA doubles championships. She won these in 2014 and 2015 with her partner Maya Jansen.
Erin was a top junior player, reaching a career-high rank of No. 17 in 2013. She studied public relations at the University of Alabama. She played for their tennis team from 2013 until she graduated in 2017. Her success in tournaments helped her climb the doubles rankings. She broke into the top 200 in 2018 and then the top 100. Her first major WTA doubles title came in July 2021.

Erin's Early Life and Family
Erin Routliffe was born in New Zealand. Her parents, Robert Routliffe and Catherine MacLennan, were sailing around the world. They lived in New Zealand for four years before moving back to Canada. Erin has two sisters, Tara and Tess. Tess is a famous para-swimmer. Both of Erin's sisters were also born in Auckland. In 2011, Erin moved to Montreal to train at the National Training Centre. She trained there until 2013.
Erin's Tennis Journey
Starting Out in Junior Tennis (2010–2011)
In October 2010, Erin won a doubles title in Burlington, Ontario. A year later, she won her first junior singles title at the same event. She also reached the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles at a big tournament in Saguenay.
Junior and Early Pro Steps (2012–2013)
In April 2012, Erin won both singles and doubles titles at a tournament in France. She reached the doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon as a junior. She also made the doubles final at a tournament in Repentigny, Quebec. Later, she won a doubles title in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with Carol Zhao. In 2013, Erin reached her first professional doubles final in Australia. She also won a gold medal in singles at the Canada Summer Games.
College and Pro Transition (2014–2017)
In 2014, Erin reached her third career doubles final with Carol Zhao. In 2015, she made another doubles final in Granby with Laura Robson. She also played in the main draw of the US Open doubles. In July 2016, Erin reached her first professional singles final in Winnipeg. In October, she won her first professional doubles title in Charleston, South Carolina.
In June 2017, Erin changed her nationality to represent New Zealand. She played her first team matches for New Zealand in the Fed Cup. In November 2017, she won her second doubles title in Toronto with Alexa Guarachi.
Climbing the Ranks (2018–2021)
In January 2018, Erin won two more doubles titles in Egypt with Jade Lewis. She then won her first professional singles title there. Erin continued to win doubles titles with Alexa Guarachi and Victoria Rodríguez. They won tournaments in Mexico, Alabama, and Thailand. Erin and Alexa Guarachi even played at Wimbledon in 2018. They reached the final of the Washington Open, a big WTA event.
In 2019, Erin continued to play in many tournaments. She won another doubles title in Bonita Springs with Alexa Guarachi. In February 2020, she won a doubles title in Hamilton, New Zealand, with Emily Fanning. In July 2021, Erin won her very first WTA Tour doubles title. She won the Palermo Ladies Open with Kimberley Zimmermann.
Breaking into the Top 30 (2022)
In January 2022, Erin reached the semifinals of a tournament in Adelaide. She partnered with Alicja Rosolska. They also reached the quarterfinals at big WTA 1000 events in Qatar and Miami. The pair made it to two more finals in St. Petersburg and Bad Homburg.
Erin played in her first French Open and reached the third round in doubles. At Wimbledon, she made it to the quarterfinals for the first time in a major tournament. This made her the first New Zealand woman to reach the last eight there since 2011. On 8 August 2022, she entered the top 30 in the world doubles rankings. This happened after she won the Washington Open title with Jessica Pegula.
Grand Slam Champion and WTA Finals (2023)
Erin played her first singles match on the WTA Tour in Auckland as a wildcard. In March, she won her third doubles title with Aldila Sutjiadi at the 2023 ATX Open. She then got her first singles win on the WTA Tour in Strasbourg.
In August, Erin partnered with Gabriela Dabrowski at the US Open. They were seeded 16th and reached the quarterfinals. They then won their semifinal match to reach the final. In the final, they won the US Open title, which was a first Grand Slam title for both players! After this win, Erin entered the top 20 in the world rankings.
Erin and Gabriela also reached their first WTA 1000 final in Guadalajara. They then won the Zhengzhou Open. This win helped them qualify for the 2023 WTA Finals in Cancún. Erin was the first New Zealander to play in this important year-end event. She reached a new career-high ranking of world No. 11 in November 2023.
World No. 1 and WTA Finals Champion (2024)
In 2024, Erin and Gabriela Dabrowski reached another WTA 1000 final at the Miami Open. Erin also reached the final of the Italian Open with Coco Gauff. This helped her reach a new career-high ranking of No. 3 in May 2024.
In June, she won her sixth title with Gabriela Dabrowski at the Nottingham Open. This was her first title on grass courts. This win pushed her to a new career-high ranking of No. 2.
At Wimbledon, Erin and Gabriela reached the final. After this tournament, on 15 July, Erin Routliffe became the world's number one doubles player! She also reached the semifinals in mixed doubles with Michael Venus.
At the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia, Erin and Gabriela were seeded second. They won all their matches to reach the semifinals. They then won the final against Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend. This made Erin the first New Zealander to win a WTA Finals title.
