Greatest Hits is a special label for popular PlayStation video games. Sony Interactive Entertainment uses this label for games that have sold a lot of copies. These games are then sold at a lower price than when they first came out.

Games with the Greatest Hits label often have special packaging. Since the PlayStation 2, these games usually come in red cases or have red banners on their box art. This helps players easily spot them in stores.

Other parts of the world have similar programs. In Europe and Oceania, it's called "Essentials". In Japan and some Asian countries, it's "The Best". South Korea has "BigHit", and South America uses "Favoritos". For PlayStation 4 games, the label is called PlayStation Hits in many regions, including North America, Brazil, Europe, Oceania, Japan, and parts of Asia.

How Games Become Greatest Hits

When Sony started the Greatest Hits program for the first PlayStation in March 1997, a game needed to sell at least 150,000 copies. It also had to be available for at least one year. Later, the sales needed increased to 250,000 copies.

For the PlayStation 2 program, which began in 2002, games had to sell 400,000 copies or more. They also needed to be on the market for at least one year. The first Greatest Hits games usually cost $24.99. Now, they often sell for about $19.99.

In 2006, the program came to the PlayStation Portable. To qualify, a game needed to be out for at least 9 months. It also had to sell 250,000 copies or more. These games usually started at $19.99.

The PlayStation 3 got its Greatest Hits program on July 28, 2008. For PS3 games, the rules were a bit different. A game had to be on the market for 10 months. It also needed to sell at least 500,000 copies. PlayStation 3 Greatest Hits games currently sell for $29.99.

On June 19, 2018, Sony launched PlayStation Hits for PlayStation 4 games. This program is for Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Like PS3 Greatest Hits, these games have red packaging and a red banner. You can also find PlayStation Hits prices on the PlayStation Store.

Special Editions of Greatest Hits Games

Most Greatest Hits games are just the original game with new packaging and a lower price. But sometimes, a game gets a "special edition" when it becomes a Greatest Hit. These special editions might include small extras. This could be things like bug fixes, new game demos, or even music CDs. Some games even got small improvements, like adding analog stick control or vibration features.

Sometimes, bigger changes are made to these special editions. For example, the Greatest Hits versions of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening and Silent Hill 2 were much better. They added new characters, levels, or game modes.
