Guardians of the Galaxy is an animated TV show from America. It's based on the Marvel Comics superhero team with the same name. Marvel Animation made the series. It was shown on Disney XD. The show first aired on September 26, 2015. It was part of the Marvel Universe block of shows.

The TV series has the same main characters as the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. However, it is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It also doesn't share the same story as the movie. Only one actor from the movie, Seth Green, returned for the show. He played the voice of Howard the Duck.

The third and last season of the show was called Mission: Breakout!. It started in March 2018 and finished on June 9, 2019.

Storyline of the Show

Season 1: The Cosmic Seed

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of heroes. They include Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. In this season, they find a special item called the Spartaxian CryptoCube. This cube holds a map to something called the Cosmic Seed.

The Cosmic Seed is a very powerful weapon. It can create a whole new universe! The Guardians must find and destroy it. They need to do this before evil villains get their hands on it. These villains include Thanos, his helpers like Ronan the Accuser and Nebula. Also, J'son, who is Star-Lord's dad, wants it. The Ravagers, led by Yondu, are also after it. The Guardians must stop anyone who wants to use its power to harm the universe.

Season 2: New Threats and Allies

After defeating Thanos, the Guardians find a strange sarcophagus. It has weird powers and is later stolen by Yondu. The Guardians try to find it. They also compete against Mantis and the Universal Believers.

This sarcophagus later opens up to reveal Adam Warlock. The Guardians help Adam Warlock choose a good path for himself. Later, Star-Lord's dad, J'son, escapes from prison. He steals Nova Centurion helmets. He uses them to try and control Adam Warlock. This turns Adam Warlock into the powerful Magus. Magus then attacks the home planets of each Guardian. The Guardians manage to save J'son from Magus. This turns Adam Warlock back to normal. After a big explosion, Adam Warlock is protected by Groot in a cocoon. He will re-emerge one day.

Season 3: Mission Breakout!

The third season is based on the Disney Parks ride, of the same name. In this season, the Guardians are framed for a crime. The Collector sets them up. He makes Howard the Duck trick them into stealing a Kree item. This happens after the Guardians accidentally broke some things at the Collector's prison.

Now, the Guardians are on the run. They have to avoid the Kree Accuser, Phyla-Vell. Howard the Duck admits he was forced by the Collector to trick them. The Collector's ship then shrinks a planet called Hala. Phyla-Vell joins the Guardians to save Hala. They defeat the Collector, but he gets away.

Later, the Guardians travel through the Black Vortex. They discover that the Darkhawks are replacing important leaders. These Darkhawks were made by Odin's brother, Serpent. Serpent wants to take over Asgard. The Guardians find pieces of a special sword called Dragonfang. With help from Thanos and Loki, they defeat Serpent. They save the galaxy once again.

This season also had a special crossover episode. Characters like Spider-Man, Max Modell, Venom, and Carnage appeared. This episode was part of the Spider-Man TV series. Stan Lee also had a voice role in this episode.

Behind the Scenes

Leo Riley was the Supervising Director for the show. Lisa Schaffer was in charge of Casting and Voice Direction.

Marvel was thinking about making a new animated series. They were considering either a Spider-Man show or a Guardians of the Galaxy show. The Guardians had appeared in Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man. These appearances were like a test to see if they could have their own show. In January 2014, it was decided that the Guardians of the Galaxy series would be made.

On July 26, 2014, Marvel Animation announced the show at San Diego Comic-Con. This was just a week before the Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out. They showed a short video with Rocket Raccoon and Star-Lord. Because the live-action movie was so popular, Marvel and Disney XD decided to move forward with the animated series. They showed some test footage at New York Comic Con. The show was planned to air in 2015 as part of the Marvel Universe on Disney XD.

Early previews of the show started on Disney XD on August 1, 2015. A full preview aired on September 5, 2015. The official one-hour premiere was on September 26, 2015. Each episode's title is named after a popular song from the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s. In 2015, it was announced that the series would have a second season. Disney XD aired the second season starting on March 11, 2017.

Where it Aired

Guardians of the Galaxy was shown on Disney XD in the United States. It also aired on Disney Channel in Canada. This was on September 5, 2015, as a preview. The show officially started on September 26, 2015. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it premiered on Disney XD on November 7, 2015. It also aired in Australia and New Zealand on Disney XD on November 8, 2015. In India, the show started airing on Marvel HQ (which is like Disney XD India) from March 8, 2019.

Music from the Show

The show uses licensed songs from the 1970s. These songs help set the mood and sound of the series. In September, an album was announced. It was called Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Mix Vol. 1 (Music from the Animated Television Series). This album has 12 songs that were used in the first season of the show.
