"How Far I'll Go" is a famous song from Disney's 2016 animated movie Moana. It was written by the talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also created the musical Hamilton. In the film, the song is sung by actress and singer Auliʻi Cravalho, who voices the character of Moana.

The song was released on November 18, 2016, as part of the movie's soundtrack. There is also a pop version of the song recorded by Canadian singer Alessia Cara. "How Far I'll Go" became very popular and was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. It won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

How the Song Was Created

"How Far I'll Go" is Moana's big "I Want" song. In many Disney movies, the main character sings an "I Want" song to express their dreams and what they hope for. This song shows Moana's deep desire to explore the ocean, even though she loves her family and her island.

Writing the Perfect Song

The writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, wanted to show Moana's complicated feelings. She loves her home but feels a strong pull toward the sea. It’s not that she hates her island; she just feels like there’s something more out there for her.

To get into the right mindset, Miranda spent a weekend in his childhood bedroom. He wanted to remember what it felt like to be 16, just like Moana. At that age, he had big dreams of being in show business, which felt very far away. This helped him write a song that felt real and full of emotion. He knew he had to write a song that was different from "Let It Go" from Frozen, and he succeeded.

Musical Style

"How Far I'll Go" has a moderate speed and is written in the key of E major. Near the end of the song, the key changes to F major, making the ending sound even more powerful. The song perfectly showcases Auliʻi Cravalho's singing voice.

When Moana was released in theaters worldwide, "How Far I'll Go" was translated into many different languages. In total, there were 44 different versions, including a special version in the Tahitian language.

To promote the movie, singers from different countries recorded their own versions of the song. For example, singers from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia recorded the song in English and their native languages.

In 2017, a version of the movie was created in the Māori language. A year later, a Hawaiian version was released, with Auliʻi Cravalho returning to sing as Moana.
