The iPhone 5c is a smartphone created by Apple Inc.. It was part of the sixth group of iPhones. This phone was first shown on September 10, 2013, and came out on September 20, 2013. It was released at the same time as the more advanced iPhone 5s. The "c" in iPhone 5c stands for "Color," because it came in many bright colors.

The iPhone 5c was like a colorful version of the iPhone 5. It had similar inside parts but came with a strong plastic (polycarbonate) case instead of the iPhone 5's metal case. The iPhone 5c was available in several fun colors and came with iOS 7, Apple's mobile operating system. It was sold at a lower price than the new iPhone 5s. Instead of just making the old iPhone 5 cheaper, Apple stopped selling it and brought out the 5c as its replacement.

On September 9, 2014, the iPhone 5c models with 16 and 32 gigabytes (GB) of storage were replaced by an 8 GB model. This happened when the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were announced. The 8 GB version was then stopped in most places on September 9, 2015, but stayed available in India until February 17, 2016. The iPhone 5c was the last new iPhone to be sold at a lower price than the main iPhone until the first iPhone SE came out in 2016.

What Makes the iPhone 5c Special?

Colorful and Strong Design

The iPhone 5c had a new look with a plastic outer shell. This plastic body was made stronger by a steel band inside. Because of these changes, the phone weighed 132 grams. This was 20 grams heavier than the iPhone 5 and 5s, but still lighter than older iPhone models.

The iPhone 5c was also a bit thicker. Its design was quite similar to the iPod Touch (5th generation) models, which also came in many colors but were made from different materials. Small changes included a different camera part and a new design for the mute/ringer switch. Many people liked the design, saying it was one of the toughest iPhones ever.

The iPhone 5c was offered in five bright colors:

Color Name Front
White Black
Blue
Green
Yellow
Pink

Easy-to-Use Software

The iPhone 5c used iOS, which is Apple's special mobile operating system. The way you use iOS is by touching the screen with your fingers. You use gestures like swiping, tapping, and pinching to control things. The phone also uses accelerometers. These let some apps react when you shake the phone or turn it sideways. For example, shaking can undo something, and turning it sideways can switch from tall to wide view.

The iPhone 5c came with iOS 7, which was released on September 20, 2013. This update brought a fresh, simpler look to the iPhone. It had new icons, clearer text, and cool effects that made the screen feel like it had layers.

Your iPhone 5c could also act as a Wi-Fi hotspot. This means it could share its internet connection with other devices using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a USB cable. You could also visit the App Store on the phone. This is where you can find and download many different apps for your iPhone.

iOS 7 added a feature called AirDrop. This allowed you to easily share files with other Apple devices nearby, like an iPhone 5 or newer, an iPod Touch (5th generation), or an iPad. Another helpful feature was Control Center. You could swipe up from any screen, even the lock screen, to quickly change settings. This included turning Wi-Fi on or off, adjusting screen brightness, and even using the camera's flash as a flashlight.

The iPhone 5c could play music and videos. It also came with Apple Maps for directions and Passbook for tickets and coupons. The Maps app gave you spoken directions and showed 3D views of some cities.

The 5c also had Siri, your personal voice assistant. Siri could answer questions, suggest things, and do tasks just by you talking to it. Apple said Siri learns what you like over time. In iOS 7, Siri got new voices and could work with Twitter, Wikipedia, and Bing. The newest operating system the iPhone 5c could use was iOS 10, released in 2016. Newer iOS versions, like iOS 11, do not work on this iPhone because it uses older technology.

You could also use Facebook directly from Apple's apps. For example, your Calendar could show Facebook events. iTunes Radio, a free online music service, was also on the iPhone 5c. It worked with Siri and let you skip songs, make your own stations, and buy songs from the iTunes Store.

Inside the iPhone 5c: Hardware

The iPhone 5c used many of the same parts as the iPhone 5, with a few small changes.

Instead of the iPhone 5's metal body, the 5c had a single piece of strong plastic for its body. This plastic was reinforced with a steel frame inside, which also helped with the phone's antenna. The iPhone 5c came in bright colors for the back: blue, green, pink, yellow, and white. The front of the phone was always black glass.

The iPhone 5c used a special chip called the Apple A6. This was the same chip found in the iPhone 5. It had a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM.

The iPhone 5c had new LTE antennas. Apple said these antennas could connect to more LTE networks than any other smartphone at the time.

The 5c featured a 4-inch Retina multi-touch display. This screen had a clear resolution of 640×1136 pixels. You could get the phone with 8, 16, or 32 GB of storage. You could not add more storage with a memory card. The iPhone 5c used a small Nano SIM card, just like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5.

The phone had a rechargeable battery that was slightly better than the iPhone 5's battery. It could last up to 225 hours on standby or 8 hours of talk time. The battery was built into the phone, so you couldn't easily replace it yourself.

The iPhone 5c kept the 8 MP back camera from the iPhone 5, but it had a slightly different setup. The front camera, used for FaceTime and selfies, had a lower resolution of 1.2 megapixels.

The iPhone 5c did not have some of the big new features that came with the iPhone 5s. For example, it didn't have the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. It also didn't have the newer, faster A7 chip. However, the iPhone 5c could take still photos while recording videos and zoom in 3 times digitally.

The iPhone 5c was the last iPhone to use a 32-bit processor. This means it used an older type of processing technology compared to newer iPhones.

When the iPhone 5c was announced, Apple also showed off special cases for it. These cases came in six colors: black, white, pink, yellow, blue, and green. The cases had holes cut out of them. These holes let the color of your iPhone's back show through, creating a cool two-tone look. However, this also meant the word "iPhone" on the back of the phone looked like "hon" through the holes!

With the different case colors and phone colors, you could make thirty different color combinations. The inside of the case was soft, and the outside was made of silicone. This was the first time Apple made a case for an iPhone since the iPhone 4 Bumpers.

Apple also released a charging dock for the iPhone 5c. This was the first time Apple made a dock for an iPhone since the iPhone 4. However, many people didn't like the dock because it didn't work well with phone cases.
