The iPhone 5s is a smartphone created by Apple Inc.. It was the seventh version of the iPhone, coming after the iPhone 5. Apple showed it off in September 2013, at the same time as the iPhone 5c.

The iPhone 5s looked a lot like the iPhone 5. However, it came in a new gold color, along with the existing silver and "space gray" options. Inside, the iPhone 5s had much better parts. It was the first smartphone ever to use a 64-bit processor, called the A7 chip. It also had a special M7 chip to handle motion.

A big new feature was Touch ID. This was a fingerprint recognition system built into the home button. You could use it to unlock your phone or buy apps and music. The camera also got better, with a wider opening for light and a special dual-LED flash. The iPhone 5s came with new earphones called EarPods. It had a 4-inch screen, just like the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5s first came with iOS 7, which had a completely new look. This new design was flatter and more colorful. New features in iOS 7 included AirDrop for sharing files, Control Center for quick settings, and iTunes Radio for streaming music. The iPhone 5s was supported with software updates for a long time, from iOS 7 all the way to iOS 12.

People generally liked the iPhone 5s. Many thought it was the best smartphone available because of its improved hardware and Touch ID. Some wished it had a new design or a bigger screen. Others worried about the security of the Touch ID system. Apple sold nine million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c phones during their first weekend, which was a new record!

The iPhone 6 replaced the iPhone 5s as Apple's main phone in September 2014. The iPhone 5s was stopped being sold on March 21, 2016. This happened when Apple released the iPhone SE, which had the same small size as the 5s but with the powerful parts of the iPhone 6s.

How the iPhone 5s Was Developed

The iPhone 5s was announced during a keynote at 4 Infinite Loop on September 10, 2013.

Before Apple officially showed the iPhone 5s, many people thought it would have a fingerprint scanner. This idea came from Apple buying a company called AuthenTec, which made mobile security products. Also, early versions of iOS 7 software hinted at a fingerprint sensor on the home button. Leaked pictures of the iPhone 5s packaging showed a metal ring around the home button, which was a clue about the new feature.

Apple introduced the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s at an event on September 10, 2013. Both phones were released on September 20, 2013. A lot of the talk was about the new Touch ID fingerprint scanner. But the new 64-bit Apple A7 processor was also a big deal.

Phil Schiller, an Apple executive, said the A7 was the "first-ever 64-bit processor in a phone of any kind." He explained that it made the phone much faster for apps and graphics. He even showed a game called Infinity Blade III to prove how powerful the A7 chip was.

The iPhone 5s first came out in many countries on September 20, 2013. More countries got it in October and November 2013. The iPhone 5s was replaced by the iPhone 6 in September 2014. However, the 5s was still sold at a lower price for a while. The gold version of the iPhone 5s was stopped being sold in September 2015. The iPhone 5s was officially discontinued in March 2016.

What Makes the iPhone 5s Special

Design and Look

Design and Hardware of iPhone 5s

The iPhone 5s looked very similar to the iPhone 5. It had a 4-inch LCD Retina display screen. The screen had a resolution of 640x1136 pixels. The phone was about 0.30 in (7.6 mm) thick and weighed 112 grams (4.0 oz). It was made with an aluminum frame.

The home button on the iPhone 5s was new. It was flat and covered with a strong sapphire crystal. A metal ring around the button helped with the Touch ID feature. The phone came in three colors: "space gray" (a darker gray), white with silver, and white with gold. The gold color was new for iPhones and was very popular.

Inside the Phone: Hardware

The iPhone 5s used a powerful chip called the Apple A7. This was the first 64-bit processor ever in a smartphone. This meant the phone could handle more complex tasks and run apps faster. The phone's software was made to work perfectly with this new chip.

It also had a special M7 "motion co-processor." This chip helped handle information from the phone's accelerometer and gyroscope. It meant the main processor didn't have to work as hard when you were using apps that track movement.

The iPhone 5s had a battery that could last for 10 hours of talk time or 250 hours on standby.

The home button had a cool feature called Touch ID. This system could read your fingerprint to unlock the phone. It could also approve purchases from the App Store or iTunes Store without needing a password. The sensor was very accurate and could read your print from any angle. You could even teach it to recognize multiple fingerprints from different people. Your fingerprint data was kept very safe inside the phone's chip and couldn't be accessed by other apps.

Camera Features

The iPhone 5s had an 8-megapixel camera. The lens was improved, letting in more light for better photos. It also had a special dual "True Tone" flash. This flash used two different colored lights (amber and white) to make sure your photos had natural colors, especially in tricky lighting.

The camera software had features like automatic digital image stabilization to reduce blur. It also had a burst mode that could take 10 pictures per second. You could also record slow-motion videos at 120 frames per second. This was the first iPhone that could record video faster than 30 frames per second.

What Came With It: Accessories

The iPhone 5s came with Apple EarPods. These earphones were designed to sound better than older Apple headphones. Apple also sold special cases for the iPhone 5s made of leather and soft microfiber. There were also docks available to charge and hold the phone.

Operating System and Software

The iPhone 5s launched with iOS 7. This version of iOS had a brand new look. It was designed to be simpler, flatter, and more colorful. It moved away from older designs that tried to make digital things look like real-world objects.

iOS 7 added AirDrop, which let you easily share files with other Apple devices nearby using Wi-Fi. It also introduced Control Center. You could swipe up from the bottom of the screen to quickly access settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness, and a flashlight.

iTunes Radio, a free online music streaming service, was also included. You could listen to different music stations and even buy songs you liked from the iTunes Store.

Apple announced in June 2018 that the iPhone 5s would get the iOS 12 update. This was a big deal because it meant the iPhone 5s supported six major versions of iOS. This made it one of the longest-supported Apple devices ever! The iOS 12 update also made the phone run much faster, improving things like the camera and keyboard. The iPhone 5s did not receive the iOS 13 update, which came out in September 2019.
