These landmarks are important because they tell us about the past of the city, the state, and even the whole country. Some are recognized by the City of Omaha, while others are listed on the National Register of Historic Places or even as National Historic Landmarks, which means they are super important!
This article will show you some of these amazing places. They include homes, businesses, churches, schools, farms, and other spots that have played a big part in Omaha's story.

Protecting Omaha's History
Omaha has been working to save its historic places for over 50 years. The first report about historical sites was written in 1959. In the 1960s, some buildings were first added to the National Register of Historic Buildings.
A big moment for people who wanted to save old buildings happened in 1966. The Old Post Office was torn down, and then the Old City Hall was demolished the next year. These events made people realize how important it was to protect these treasures. Because of this, Omaha created a plan in 1980 to save its landmarks.
Sometimes, new businesses and city growth have led to old buildings being torn down. In 1989, a whole area called "Jobbers Canyon" was demolished. This was a sad loss, as 24 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places were destroyed at once. The Christian Specht Building is a special building because it's the only one left in Nebraska with a cast-iron front.
Not all stories are sad, though! The Burlington Train Station, another historic spot downtown, was empty for over 30 years. It lost much of its original beauty. But in 2006, a group started fixing it up. Now, it will have homes and businesses inside.
In North Omaha, the old Strehlow Terrace apartments have been renamed "Chambers Court." This honors Nebraska Legislator Ernie Chambers, a well-known local leader. Fort Omaha, which was once a supply base for the United States Army during the Indian Wars, is now used as a community college.
In 2001, a unique movie theater called the Indian Hills Theater was torn down. It was the last of its kind in the United States, known for its special "Cinerama" screen. Many people tried to save it, including famous actors, but it was still demolished to make way for a parking lot.
Omaha's Landmark Protection Team
Omaha created its first law to protect historic places in 1977. This happened after the Old Post Office was torn down. A group called Landmarks, Inc. pushed for the city to create a special commission.
By 2007, more than 90 buildings in Omaha had been recognized as historic. They even received special tax help to encourage people to fix them up while keeping their historical look.
National Recognition for Omaha's Landmarks
Many historic places in Omaha are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places across the country that are important to history. Even more special, three places in Omaha have been named National Historic Landmarks by the U.S. government. This means they are super important to the history of the entire nation!
