The Dursley Family
The Dursley family are Harry Potter's only living relatives. Albus Dumbledore placed baby Harry with them to keep him safe. The Dursleys live at Number 4, Privet Drive, in Little Whinging, England. They are all Muggles, which means they have no magic. They really dislike anything to do with magic or the Wizarding World.
Vernon Dursley: Harry's Uncle
Vernon Dursley is Harry's uncle. He is married to Harry's aunt, Petunia. Vernon is a big, strong man who looks a bit like a walrus. He has a large mustache and almost no neck. He is the boss of his family. He makes most of the rules for Harry and often threatens him. He also spoils his son, Dudley. Vernon is the director of a company that makes drills called Grunnings. He seems to be very good at his job. He often reads the Daily Mail newspaper.
Uncle Vernon and his wife raised Harry from a young age, but they were often mean to him. They never told him about the magical world. They said his parents died in a car crash, not by magic. Vernon disliked Harry so much that he would lock him up as punishment. One summer, Vernon put bars on Harry's window to keep him from leaving. But the Weasley family rescued Harry in their father's flying car. Vernon also hated anything unusual or magical.
When the Dursleys had to leave their home to hide, Vernon almost shook Harry's hand goodbye. But he couldn't bring himself to do it. In the movie, he leaves without saying anything to Harry.
Richard Griffiths played Vernon in the movies.
Petunia Dursley: Harry's Aunt
Petunia Dursley is Harry's aunt and his mother Lily's older sister. She is Vernon's wife and Dudley's mother. She is described as a thin woman with blonde hair and a "horsey" face. She has a very long neck and spends a lot of time watching her neighbors. Her eyes are large and pale, unlike Lily's. Her whole family, except Lily, were Muggles. Petunia's parents were proud of Lily's magic. But Petunia was jealous and thought her sister was strange. Petunia even wrote to Dumbledore, asking to go to Hogwarts. Dumbledore kindly said no. After that, Petunia became bitter about magic and the wizarding world.
Petunia knew more about the wizarding world than she let on. After Dementors attacked Harry and Dudley, Petunia said she knew Dementors guard the wizard prison, Azkaban. When Harry and her family looked surprised, she said she heard "that awful boy" telling Lily about them years ago. Harry thought she meant his father, James. But in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he learned it was actually Severus Snape. Snape knew both Lily and Petunia when they were children. One time, Petunia and Vernon almost kicked Harry out of their house. But Dumbledore sent Petunia a Howler, a magical screaming letter. She then decided to let Harry stay. She claimed it was because of what the neighbors might think.
Before the Dursleys left Privet Drive, Petunia almost wished Harry good luck. This showed she might have felt a small connection to him. But her dislike of magic stopped her, and she left without a word. In a deleted scene from the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Petunia shows sadness for losing her sister Lily. She reminds Harry that she lost a sister too.
In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it is mentioned that Petunia Dursley died a few years after Harry's second son, Albus Severus, started Hogwarts.
Actress Fiona Shaw played Petunia in the films. Ariella Paradise played her as a child.
Dudley Dursley: Harry's Cousin
Dudley Dursley is the son of Vernon and Petunia Dursley. He is Harry's only cousin. Dudley is a very large, blonde boy. He always gets his way and acts like a spoiled child. Dudley is a mean bully and leads a group of friends. They often beat up Harry and younger children for small reasons. In the first book, Dudley is why Harry has no friends before Hogwarts. Harry was good at sports and got good grades. But he was Dudley's favorite victim, so classmates were too scared to like him. Dudley is only one month older than Harry. He goes to Smeltings, his father's old private school.
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Rubeus Hagrid gives Dudley a pig's tail. It has to be removed at a hospital in London. In Goblet of Fire, the school nurse tells the Dursleys to put Dudley on a strict diet. During this diet, the Weasleys come to pick up Harry for the Quidditch World Cup. Fred Weasley "accidentally" drops a Ton-Tongue Toffee. This makes Dudley's tongue grow to four feet long. His mother finally lets Arthur Weasley shrink it. By the start of Order of the Phoenix, Dudley has been on his diet for a year. He has also started boxing and become a champion.
In the fifth book, two Dementors attack Dudley and Harry in an alley. Dudley collapses. Harry uses the Patronus spell to chase the Dementors away. Their neighbor, Mrs. Figg, then runs in. She reveals she is a Squib, someone born to wizards but without magic. She talks about Dementors. Harry and Mrs. Figg carry a shaken Dudley home. Dudley thinks Harry made the Dementors appear. After this, Harry wonders what bad memories Dudley relived. Dementors force people to remember their worst experiences. J.K. Rowling later said that Dudley's worst fear was seeing himself as he truly was. He saw himself as a cruel, selfish bully with no feelings for others. This shocked him deeply.
This experience makes Dudley think better of Harry. In Deathly Hallows, Dudley is the only Dursley to accept Harry. He shakes Harry's hand and thanks him for saving his "soul" from the Dementor attack. He also shows some concern for Harry when the Dursleys leave to hide. Harry says goodbye to him using Dudley's old nickname, "Big D". In the movie, this moment is a deleted scene.
Rowling said that many people wanted an adult Dudley with a wizard child in the Deathly Hallows ending. She thought about it but decided that Vernon's genes would stop any magic from appearing. Rowling said Harry and Dudley would "stay on Christmas card" terms. Harry would visit Dudley's family, but his children would "dread" it. However, Dudley's kids and Harry's kids would sometimes "get together." In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it is mentioned that adult Dudley sent Harry his baby blanket. This was Harry's only possession from his parents.
Harry Melling played Dudley in the Harry Potter films. Melling had to wear a fat suit because he lost a lot of weight as the films went on.
Marge Dursley: Vernon's Sister
Marjorie Eileen Dursley is Vernon's older sister. She looks like him: a large woman with almost no neck and a small mustache. She is not Harry's relative, but he has to call her "Aunt Marge." Marge lives in the countryside and breeds bulldogs. She rarely visits Privet Drive, which Harry is happy about. She loves her nephew, Dudley, and treats Harry with meanness. Aunt Marge believes Harry is a terrible boy because of Vernon and Petunia's lies. She enjoys insulting Harry and his dead parents. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry loses his temper after she insults his parents. He inflates her, making her blow up like a giant balloon and float to the ceiling. Marge is later rescued and returned to normal. The Ministry of Magic changes her memory so she doesn't remember the incident. She also appeared in a memory in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix where Harry is chased up a tree by one of Marge's bulldogs.
Pam Ferris played Marge in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In the film, she floats out of the house and into the sky.
Other Important Characters
Bathilda Bagshot: Wizarding Historian
Bathilda Bagshot is a famous wizarding historian. She wrote the book A History of Magic. She lives in Godric's Hollow, the village where Harry was born. She was an old friend of Dumbledore and a neighbor of the Potters. Gellert Grindelwald is her great-nephew. He came to live with her after being expelled from Durmstrang school. Bathilda gave a lot of information to Rita Skeeter for her book about Dumbledore. Rita used a truth potion called Veritaserum to get the information. Bathilda died before Harry arrived in Godric's Hollow. Lord Voldemort enchanted her decaying body. He used it as a disguise for his snake, Nagini. The snake was told to hold Harry until Voldemort arrived.
Hazel Douglas played Bathilda in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Frank Bryce: Riddle House Caretaker
Frank Bryce was a quiet Muggle who fought in World War II. He worked as the caretaker of the Riddle family mansion in Little Hangleton. In 1943, the Riddles were killed by Tom Riddle (who later became Lord Voldemort). Bryce had the keys to the house, so he was arrested and questioned. But there was no proof of murder, so the police had to let Bryce go. However, the people of Little Hangleton didn't trust him. He lived alone on the Riddle estate, still taking care of the grounds.
At the start of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Voldemort secretly returned to the Riddle house. Bryce accidentally overheard Voldemort's plan to kill Harry. He thought Voldemort and Wormtail were spies. But before he could act, Nagini revealed his presence. Voldemort killed him with the Avada Kedavra curse. Bryce appeared again in the same book during Harry and Voldemort's graveyard duel. A magical effect brought back an "echo" of Bryce from Voldemort's wand. Even though he didn't know Harry, Bryce strongly encouraged him to keep fighting.
Eric Sykes played Bryce in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Crabbe and Goyle: Draco's Friends
Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle were Slytherin students in Harry's year. Their fathers were both Death Eaters. Because they were big and strong, they acted as Draco Malfoy's helpers. They would do whatever Malfoy told them, especially to scare other students. Both of them were not very smart or curious. Crabbe was a bit smarter than Goyle. They seemed unable to think for themselves.
Crabbe and Goyle first appeared as new Slytherin Quidditch Beaters in their fifth year. After Harry caught the Snitch, Crabbe purposely hit a Bludger into Harry's back. Harry fell off his broom. Crabbe only got a light punishment. They didn't return to the team the next year. They often watched out for Malfoy when he went into the Room of Requirement. After Malfoy left school, Crabbe and Goyle were left alone.
The three of them met again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Both of them spoke for the first time. Crabbe's voice was "oddly soft" for his size. Goyle's was just a grunt. Crabbe had joined the Death Eaters more strongly than Goyle or Malfoy. He became more independent from Malfoy. He knew the Malfoy family was losing favor with Voldemort. Crabbe and Goyle had become surprisingly powerful wizards. They were good at using the Cruciatus Curse on other students. Neville Longbottom said it was "the first time they were the best in anything." During the fight for the Horcrux with Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the Room of Requirement, Crabbe ignored Malfoy's order not to kill Harry. He carelessly used the Avada Kedavra curse. Finally, he created a magical fire that burned the room. The fire quickly grew out of control and killed him. It also destroyed the Horcrux. Goyle was knocked out during the fight. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rescued him and Draco.
Jamie Waylett played Crabbe and Joshua Herdman played Goyle in the first six Harry Potter movies. Only Herdman appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Goyle took Crabbe's role in the plot, and Blaise Zabini replaced Goyle.
Gellert Grindelwald: A Dark Wizard
Gellert Grindelwald was a very powerful dark wizard. According to Rita Skeeter's book, he was second only to Voldemort as the most dangerous dark wizard of all time. His name is first mentioned in Philosopher's Stone on a Chocolate Frog card. It says that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945.
Grindelwald went to the wizarding school Durmstrang. He was expelled at age sixteen for dangerous experiments that almost killed other students. He left the symbol of the Deathly Hallows on a wall at Durmstrang before leaving. After Durmstrang, he lived with his great-aunt Bathilda Bagshot in Godric's Hollow. There, he met a young Dumbledore. In Deathly Hallows, it was revealed that Grindelwald went to Godric's Hollow to study the grave of the Peverell brothers. But he became close friends with Dumbledore. They planned to create a new world order where wizards would rule Muggles "for the greater good." This phrase later became Grindelwald's excuse for his terrible actions. They also planned to find the Deathly Hallows together. Rowling later hinted that Dumbledore was once in love with Grindelwald.
However, Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus's younger brother, disagreed with their plans. He worried their ambitions would leave his disabled sister, Ariana, alone. This argument led to a three-way duel between Albus, Aberforth, and Grindelwald. Ariana was accidentally killed by one of them. Grindelwald fled, and Albus ended their friendship. Grindelwald became the master of one of the Deathly Hallows, the Elder Wand. He stole it from the wand-maker Gregorovitch. With the Elder Wand's power, he committed many terrible acts. He terrorized Europe but avoided Britain. Grindelwald's actions caused many deaths that affected Durmstrang students. Viktor Krum's grandfather was killed by Grindelwald.
After Grindelwald became powerful, Dumbledore avoided fighting him for years. He feared facing his sister's death and the possibility that he might have killed her. Both wizards were very smart and skilled fighters. When their battle finally happened, witnesses said no other wizard duel was as great. Grindelwald, who had the Elder Wand, lost to Dumbledore. Since Dumbledore won, the Elder Wand's loyalty transferred to him. After Dumbledore won, Grindelwald was imprisoned in the highest cell of Nurmengard prison. He stayed there, becoming thin and toothless, until Deathly Hallows. Voldemort arrived, looking for the Elder Wand. Grindelwald showed no fear and welcomed death. He told Voldemort that he never truly owned the wand. An enraged Voldemort killed him. In the book, Harry suggests that Grindelwald might have been trying to make up for his crimes by lying to Voldemort.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, young Grindelwald was played by Jamie Campbell Bower. The older Grindelwald was played by Michael Byrne. In the film, Grindelwald tells Voldemort where the Elder Wand is, which is different from the book.
Grindelwald also appears in the Fantastic Beasts movies. Johnny Depp played him in the first two films. In these movies, Grindelwald and Dumbledore made a blood pact when they were young. This pact meant they could never harm each other. Grindelwald carries this pact in a vial. He seeks a way to indirectly kill Dumbledore. He learns about a prophecy involving Dumbledore's assumed dead brother, Aurelius. He first appears in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He is disguised as the American Auror Percival Graves, played by Colin Farrell. He is looking for an Obscurus, who he learns is Credence Barebone. In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Jamie Campbell Bower plays young Grindelwald again. Grindelwald manages to get Credence to join him. He also reveals Credence's true identity as Aurelius. In November 2020, Johnny Depp left the role. Mads Mikkelsen replaced him as Grindelwald.
Viktor Krum: Quidditch Star
Viktor Krum is a Seeker for the Bulgarian national Quidditch team. He is a very talented player. He is good on a broom but a bit clumsy on land. Even though he is famous, Krum is often unhappy. Hermione is one of the few who think he is nice under his quiet outside. In the Quidditch World Cup final between Bulgaria and Ireland, he gets a bad bloody nose. He catches the Snitch quickly to end the game. This gives Ireland the win because Bulgaria was far behind.
Krum is chosen as the Durmstrang champion for the Triwizard Tournament. People often suspect him because Durmstrang is known for teaching Dark Arts. But Hogwarts girls admire him for his skills. During the Triwizard Tournament, he visits the Hogwarts library to talk to Hermione. He finally asks her to the Yule Ball, a formal dance. Krum has to rescue Hermione from the merpeople in the Great Lake for the Second Task. This shows how much he likes her. Right after, he invited her to stay with him in Bulgaria. He said he had "never felt this way about a girl before." He gets jealous of Harry when Rita Skeeter writes a false article. It says Hermione is playing with both boys' feelings. Krum confronts Harry about it. When he learns the truth, he and Harry become friends.
Krum briefly returns in Deathly Hallows. He is a guest at Bill and Fleur's wedding. He has a strong argument with Xenophilius Lovegood. He recognizes a symbol Xenophilius wears as Grindelwald's mark. This symbol is later found to be the mark of the Deathly Hallows. Krum's attitude suggests he wants to get back with Hermione. He is unhappy to see her dancing with Ron. Krum then asks Harry (who is disguised) if Ginny Weasley is single. This shows he was interested in her too. J.K. Rowling later said that Krum found love in his home country, Bulgaria.
Stanislav Ianevski played Krum in the movie Goblet of Fire. He had a short appearance in Deathly Hallows, but his scenes were cut from the film.
Augusta Longbottom: Neville's Grandmother
Augusta Longbottom is Neville's grandmother on his father's side. She is first seen in Philosopher's Stone before Neville goes to Hogwarts. She raised him from a young age. This was because Neville's parents were made unable to care for themselves by Cruciatus Curse by Death Eaters led by Bellatrix Lestrange. Neville is very scared of his grandmother. She is very strict and expects things to be perfect. She strongly opposes Voldemort. She is a no-nonsense witch, especially with Neville. She sometimes complains that he is not as talented as his father.
In Order of the Phoenix, Neville says his grandmother fully supports Harry and Dumbledore. They said Voldemort had returned. She even stopped her newspaper subscription because it kept saying Harry was lying. Later, Harry and his friends visit Arthur Weasley at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. They meet Augusta and Neville, who are visiting Frank and Alice. Augusta explains how Neville's parents ended up in that state. She tells Neville off for not telling his friends what happened. She says he should be "proud" to be their son for their bravery.
In Half-Blood Prince, Augusta wants Neville to keep studying Transfiguration. She thinks Charms is too easy. Minerva McGonagall reveals that Augusta thinks this because she failed her Charms exam. McGonagall also writes a letter to Augusta. She tells her it's time to be "proud of the grandson she's got."
Deathly Hallows is a big turning point for Augusta and Neville's relationship. Near the end of the book, Death Eaters targeted Augusta. This happened when Neville became the leader of Dumbledore's Army. A Ministry official, John Dawlish, was sent to arrest her. Neville said Dawlish expected an old woman living alone to be an easy target. But Augusta is a very capable witch. She easily overpowered Dawlish and escaped the Death Eaters. She sends Neville an encouraging letter, which he keeps close to his heart. Augusta arrives at the Battle of Hogwarts to help her grandson. Neville's leadership of D.A. made Augusta very proud of him.
In a 2006 skit, it was shown that Augusta keeps a mousetrap in her bag. Neville explained that his grandfather put a Fanged Gerbil in her bag in 1947 as a joke. Augusta didn't like it, especially after the gerbil bit her. So she put a mousetrap in her bag to stop it from happening again.
Leila Hoffman played Augusta in the first film. She only appeared in the background, taking Neville to the Hogwarts Express.
Xenophilius Lovegood: Luna's Father
Xenophilius Lovegood is Pandora Lovegood's husband and Luna Lovegood's father. He is the editor of The Quibbler. This magazine often publishes stories about strange ideas or creatures that might not exist. His name means "one who likes strange things."
He is first seen in Deathly Hallows as a guest at Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding. He is described as a friend. He looks unusual, with slightly crossed eyes and white, shoulder-length hair like candyfloss. He wears brightly colored robes. Xenophilius wears the symbol of the Deathly Hallows around his neck. This shows he is willing to help others who believe in the Hallows.
Later in the story, he explains the meaning of the Deathly Hallows to Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Xenophilius was a strong supporter of Harry and the anti-Voldemort movement through his magazine. But he later betrayed the trio's location to the Death Eater-controlled Ministry of Magic. He did this to get his kidnapped daughter back safely. After a fight with Xenophilius and the Death Eaters, the trio escaped. The Death Eaters arrested Xenophilius. This saved his reputation. He was mentioned on the secret "Potterwatch" radio as someone who was being treated badly for opposing Voldemort. The issue of The Quibbler where he attacked Harry was buried under his ruined home and never given out. Harry, Ron, and Hermione never told anyone about his attempted betrayal. He only did it out of fear for Luna's life.
Welsh actor and singer Rhys Ifans played Xenophilius in the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Teddy Lupin: Harry's Godson
Edward Remus "Teddy" Lupin is the son of Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. He is an orphan and Harry Potter's godson. He is named after Tonks's father, Ted Tonks, and his own father, Remus. Teddy is a Metamorphmagus like his mother. This means he can change his appearance at will. He is not affected by his father's werewolf condition. Harry mentions him in the last chapter of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry says Teddy "comes round to dinner about four times a week."
Narcissa Malfoy: Draco's Mother
Narcissa Malfoy was born Narcissa Black. She is the youngest of three sisters. Her older sisters are Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks. She is a cousin of Sirius and Regulus Black. She is also an aunt to Nymphadora Tonks, Andromeda's daughter. Narcissa went to Hogwarts and was in Slytherin. She later married Lucius Malfoy. They have one son, Draco, whom she protects very much. Narcissa is described as a tall, thin blonde woman. She would have been pretty, but she often had a look that suggested a bad smell. Narcissa seemed to share her family's beliefs about "blood purity." But her actions show she cared more about her family's safety than helping Voldemort.
Narcissa first appears briefly in Goblet of Fire at the Quidditch World Cup. Her role becomes important in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. At the start of the book, Narcissa and Bellatrix arrive at Snape's home. Narcissa is very upset. Her husband is in Azkaban, and her son has a dangerous task from Voldemort. She begs Snape to help Draco and asks him to make an Unbreakable Vow. Snape agrees. Narcissa also appears later, shopping with Draco for his new robes. She and Draco meet Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Harry teases Narcissa about her husband being in Azkaban. She then mocks Harry's dead godfather, Sirius Black. Narcissa also says Harry will die soon. Draco calms the situation by leaving with his mother.
In Deathly Hallows, Narcissa's home is used as Voldemort's headquarters. It is also used to hold prisoners, including Harry, Ron, and Hermione. When this group escapes with Dobby's help, Voldemort puts Narcissa and her family under house arrest. At the end of the book, the Malfoys are brought to Hogwarts with other Death Eaters. This happens when Voldemort attacks the castle. When Voldemort casts a deadly curse on Harry, Narcissa is told to check if he is dead. She feels Harry's heart beating. She quietly asks him if Draco is still alive at Hogwarts. Harry confirms he is. Narcissa knows she won't be free to find her son unless she returns with the Death Eaters. So, she lies to Voldemort and says Harry is dead. She is later seen with her husband and son, unsure what to do after Voldemort's death. Because of her lie, the Malfoys avoid being sent to Azkaban.
In the movies, Narcissa shows little meanness towards Harry. She only fights him after he attacks Draco. Narcissa's question to Harry and her lie to Voldemort are kept in the film. Her reaction to the final battle is changed. She ignores it completely and takes Draco with her. Lucius follows them. Helen McCrory played Narcissa in the films.
Olympe Maxime: Beauxbatons Headmistress
Madame Olympe Maxime is the headmistress of Beauxbatons, the French wizarding school. She is introduced in Goblet of Fire. Her school is invited to the Triwizard Tournament. Fleur Delacour is chosen as Beauxbatons' champion. When Harry is chosen as the fourth champion, Madame Maxime is angry. She almost leaves the tournament but agrees to stay. In Goblet of Fire, she is described as elegant and wearing black robes. She has olive skin and handsome features, but she is very tall. It is revealed that Madame Maxime is so tall because she is half-giant. She strongly denies this, even though she is about the same height as Rubeus Hagrid, who is also half-giant. Hagrid immediately likes Madame Maxime. He tries to look his best and wears his hairy brown suit when she is around.
In Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione that he and Madame Maxime visited the giants. They tried to get the giants to join the Order of the Phoenix. But they failed because Voldemort also sent Death Eaters to the giants. When giants attacked Hagrid, Madame Maxime defended him with a powerful spell. Hagrid says her spell work was "brilliant." She separates from Hagrid on the way back. This is because he would not leave his giant half-brother Grawp, who was a difficult travel companion. She returns to Beauxbatons alone. In Half-Blood Prince, Madame Maxime is at Dumbledore's funeral. Her last appearance is in Deathly Hallows. She attends the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour.
Frances de la Tour played Madame Maxime in Goblet of Fire and again in Deathly Hallows.
Cormac McLaggen: Gryffindor Student
Cormac McLaggen is a Gryffindor student one year older than Harry. He is introduced in Half-Blood Prince on the train to Hogwarts. He is a member of Horace Slughorn's Slug Club. This is because his uncle has strong ties to the Ministry of Magic. Cormac is shown as unkind. His Gryffindor bravery is both a strength and a weakness. He is reckless and proud, almost arrogant.
Cormac competes against Ron for the Keeper position on the Quidditch team. Harry is the captain. But Hermione secretly uses a Confundus Charm on Cormac. This makes him miss his last save, helping Ron keep his spot. He starts Gryffindor's match against Hufflepuff when Ron is sick. But his first game is a disaster. He tells the team what to do instead of focusing on his own position. He knocks Harry out with a Bludger. He also helps Gryffindor lose badly. This makes his housemates dislike him. He briefly becomes part of Ron and Hermione's arguments. Hermione invites him to Slughorn's Christmas party as her date. She does this to get back at Ron for dating Lavender Brown. But her plan fails. She gets annoyed with McLaggen's arrogant behavior. She leaves him alone and avoids him for the rest of the party.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Cormac is seen on the Hogwarts Express. In Part 2, he fights in the Battle of Hogwarts and survives.
Freddie Stroma played McLaggen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2.
Auntie Muriel: Weasley Relative
Muriel is a great-aunt of the Weasley children. She is on Molly's side of the family. Ron says she is rude to almost everyone. Harry first meets her in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at Bill and Fleur's wedding. She is described as having red eyes and a large, feathery pink hat. She looks like a "badly tempered flamingo." She lends her beautiful goblin-made tiara to Fleur for the wedding. During the wedding, she argues with Elphias Doge about Dumbledore's past. She also argues about Rita Skeeter's book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. Even though she dislikes Dumbledore, Muriel helps the Order of the Phoenix. She offers her house in The Deathly Hallows for Harry to stay in. Later in the book, most of the Weasleys and others hide in her house. They are targeted by Voldemort's followers.
Matyelok Gibbs played Muriel in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. But she is never named in the film.
Moaning Myrtle: Hogwarts Ghost
Moaning Myrtle (born Myrtle Elizabeth Warren) is a ghost who haunts the first-floor girls' bathroom at Hogwarts. As her name suggests, she often moans, cries, whines, and complains. This is especially true when death is mentioned. Her constant sadness and wailing cause plumbing problems in her bathroom.
In Chamber of Secrets, it is said that Myrtle is the ghost of a Muggle-born witch. She died while a student at Hogwarts, fifty years before the book's events. Myrtle was hiding in the bathroom to avoid Olive Hornby, a classmate who always teased her about her glasses. This was when the Chamber of Secrets was opened. The basilisk came out and killed her. Tom Riddle used her death to create his first Horcrux: his diary. After she died, Myrtle haunted Olive everywhere. Olive complained to the Ministry of Magic. They ordered Myrtle to return to Hogwarts. Myrtle has sadly haunted the same bathroom ever since. Despite her misery, she is often playful with Harry.
Myrtle helps Harry with his second task in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She tells Harry how to solve the golden egg puzzle. He has to open it underwater. She is more cheerful and mischievous. She enjoys having Harry to herself to boss around. He later meets her in the lake. She directs him to the merpeople's village. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she comforts Malfoy. He is worried about a task Voldemort gave him. Harry badly injures Malfoy with a Sectumsempra spell during a duel. Myrtle quickly spreads the news by screaming, "Murder! Murder in the bathroom!"
Rowling said that Myrtle was in Ravenclaw House. Her full name was Myrtle Elizabeth Warren. She added that the idea for the character came from "the frequent presence of a crying girl in communal bathrooms." This was especially true at parties and discos when Rowling was young.
Shirley Henderson played Myrtle in the movies Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire. The character was not in Half-Blood Prince.
Garrick Ollivander: Wandmaker
Garrick Ollivander owns Ollivanders, a famous shop that sells magical wands in Diagon Alley. Ollivander is usually a kind old man. But Harry feels uneasy the first two times he meets him. This is because the wandmaker seems to admire what Voldemort could do with his wands. Despite his wands being popular, he can easily remember every wand he has sold. He remembers its materials, features, and owner. In Philosopher's Stone, Ollivander helps 11-year-old Harry choose his first wand. Harry is a difficult customer to match. Ollivander finally chooses an eleven-inch-long wand made of holly. It contains a phoenix feather. This feather is later revealed to be from Dumbledore's phoenix, Magical creatures (Harry Potter)#Fawkes. The wand is perfect for Harry. Ollivander is curious why this wand suits Harry. He reveals that Fawkes gave only one other feather, to Voldemort's wand.
Ollivander appears in Goblet of Fire. He is a judge for the Weighing of the Wands ceremony. In Half-Blood Prince, his shop is closed and boarded up. Ollivander himself is missing. The movie Half-Blood Prince shows Mr. Ollivander being taken from his shop by three Death Eaters. In Deathly Hallows, Voldemort has captured Ollivander. He is imprisoned at Malfoy Manor with Luna. They become close and try to keep each other's spirits up. Dobby rescues them from the manor. At Shell Cottage, Ollivander gives Harry and his friends useful information about the Elder Wand. He later hides at Auntie Muriel's home. He sends Luna a new wand as a gift.
British actor John Hurt played Ollivander in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He returned for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2.
His first name, Garrick, was revealed on Pottermore. It was also revealed that he is married and has a son and a daughter (who has passed away). Some of his wandmaker ancestors' names were also shared: Geraint Ollivander, Gerbold Octavius Ollivander (his paternal grandfather), and Gervaise Ollivander (his father).
Pansy Parkinson: Slytherin Student
Pansy Parkinson is a Slytherin student. She is described as having a "pug-face." She is often seen with a group of Slytherin girls, acting as their leader. She is first mentioned in the Sorting in Philosopher's Stone. She first appears in Madam Hooch's flying class. She teases Parvati Patil for defending Neville Longbottom after Draco steals his Remembrall. In Prisoner of Azkaban, she cries and follows Malfoy to the hospital wing. This happens after Buckbeak attacks him. She continues to dote on him even though he is faking how bad his injury is. They went to the Yule Ball together in Goblet of Fire.
Throughout the series, Pansy often makes fun of Harry and his friends. She gives false information about Harry, Hermione, and Hagrid to Rita Skeeter. She openly criticizes Hagrid to Umbridge. She complains about his Care of Magical Creatures class and how hard it is to understand him. She and other Slytherins also tease the Gryffindor Quidditch players during practice. They especially tease Angelina Johnson about her braided hair. During a Gryffindor-Slytherin match, she leads the Slytherin students in singing a mean song called "Weasley is our King." This is Ron's first game as the new Gryffindor Keeper.
Pansy has a slightly bigger role in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She becomes a Slytherin prefect with Malfoy. Later, she joins Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad. When Dumbledore's Army escapes the Room of Requirement, Pansy searches the girls' bathrooms. She finds Hermione's list of names as proof. But the Inquisitorial Squad members are cursed during a student rebellion. This happens after Fred and George Weasley leave Hogwarts. Pansy is sent to the hospital wing and misses a day of lessons after growing a pair of antlers. Near the end of Deathly Hallows, Voldemort demands Harry surrender to stop the attack on Hogwarts. Pansy suggests handing Harry over to the Death Eaters. But the other houses stand up and point their wands at her. She eventually leaves with the other Slytherins.
Pansy was played by Katherine Nicholson in Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. Genevieve Gaunt played her in Prisoner of Azkaban. Charlotte Ritchie played her in Goblet of Fire. Lauren Shotton played her in Order of Phoenix. Scarlett Byrne played her in Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2.
Antioch, Cadmus, and Ignotus Peverell: The Deathly Hallows Owners
The Peverell family is first mentioned in Half-Blood Prince. They are ancestors of Marvolo Gaunt, Voldemort's grandfather. In the last book, they are revealed to be the first owners of the Deathly Hallows. According to The Tales of Beedle the Bard, they received them from Death. But Dumbledore believed they likely created them themselves. The Peverell family line continues through living descendants, including Harry and his children.
Hermione saw the Deathly Hallows symbol on Ignotus Peverell's grave in Godric's Hollow. Harry then remembered Marvolo Gaunt boasting that his ring had the Peverell coat of arms on it. This made Harry realize the three brothers were the Peverells. Harry figures out he is descended from Ignotus. This is because the cloak was passed down through his family. Rowling has also confirmed that Harry and Voldemort are distant relatives. This is because they are both related to the Peverells. Most wizard families share common ancestors.
Antioch Peverell was the oldest of the three Peverell brothers. He owned the Elder Wand. He was killed in his sleep after bragging about the wand's power. The murderer then stole the Elder Wand, starting its bloody history.
Cadmus Peverell was the middle of the three Peverell brothers. He owned the Resurrection Stone. He used the Stone to bring back the girl he wanted to marry, who had died too young. Even though she returned, she didn't truly belong in the living world and suffered. This drove him mad, and he killed himself to join her. The Stone was later put into a ring that belonged to Marvolo Gaunt.
Ignotus Peverell was the youngest of the three Peverell brothers. The Tales of Beedle the Bard describes him as "the humblest and the wisest." He owned the Cloak of Invisibility. Because of this, he avoided death for many years, unlike his brothers. He lived a long life and finally "greeted Death as a friend." Harry realizes his invisibility cloak is the original cloak owned by Ignotus. Unlike other invisibility cloaks, it has never faded or been damaged. This is despite being passed down through many generations of the Peverell family to Harry. Harry is therefore a descendant of Ignotus Peverell. By birth and blood, Harry Potter is the rightful owner of the three Deathly Hallows. But he decides to keep only the Cloak. He returns the Elder Wand to Dumbledore's tomb after using it to fix his own wand. He leaves the Resurrection Stone lost in the Forbidden Forest. In the movie Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry destroys the Elder Wand. He snaps it in half and throws the pieces off a bridge.
Madam Rosmerta: Pub Owner
Madam Rosmerta is the owner of The Three Broomsticks pub. She is described as a "curvy" woman with curly hair. Several students, including Ron, have a crush on her. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Madam Rosmerta is angry when Dementors are in Hogsmeade. Their presence is scaring away her customers. She hosts a meeting between McGonagall, Cornelius Fudge, Filius Flitwick, and Hagrid. But she doesn't play a big role in the early Harry Potter series.
In Half-Blood Prince, it is revealed that Draco Malfoy used the Imperius Curse to control Rosmerta. He did this to carry out his plan to kill Dumbledore. He uses her to give a cursed necklace to Katie Bell. Katie accidentally touches the necklace and is badly cursed. Draco also tells Rosmerta to send a bottle of poisoned mead to Horace Slughorn. He intends it as a Christmas gift for Dumbledore. He overheard Hermione saying school security wouldn't check a mislabeled bottle. He knew a package from Rosmerta wouldn't be checked. Malfoy talks to Rosmerta using enchanted fake Galleons. Harry and Dumbledore go to a cave to find a locket they think is a Horcrux. They then apparate to Hogsmeade. Madam Rosmerta tells them about the Dark Mark above the school. She gives them brooms to quickly return to Hogwarts. Rosmerta is among those who attend Dumbledore's funeral.
She is named after a goddess of abundance and fertility.
Julie Christie played Madam Rosmerta in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Stan Shunpike: Knight Bus Conductor
Stan Shunpike is the young, pimply conductor of the Knight Bus. He speaks with a Cockney accent. He talks to Harry when Harry travels to London in Prisoner of Azkaban. He also appears briefly in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the Quidditch World Cup. He brags to some Veela, the Bulgarian team's mascots, about his plans to become the next Minister of Magic. In Order of the Phoenix, he conducts the Knight Bus. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Ginny, Lupin, and Tonks take it back to Hogwarts after Christmas. Stan says he doesn't believe the rumors that Harry is crazy. But Harry thinks Stan doesn't care how crazy someone is, as long as they are famous.
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Stan is arrested because he is suspected of being a Death Eater. Harry and Dumbledore believe he is innocent. But Stan is kept in Azkaban. The Ministry of Magic wants to pretend they are catching Death Eaters. When the new Minister for Magic asks Harry to support the Ministry, Harry refuses. He says it's because of how the Ministry is treating Stan. In Deathly Hallows, a "strangely blank" looking Stan is among the Death Eaters chasing Harry. Harry tries to only disarm Stan. Harry believes Stan is under the Imperius Curse. Remus Lupin later tells Harry off for this. Later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are captured by Fenrir Greyback. Ron tries to pretend to be Stan. But he is immediately disbelieved. He is told Stan has "put a bit of work their way," meaning turning in missing Muggle-borns.
Stan was played by Lee Ingleby in the movie Prisoner of Azkaban.
Rita Skeeter: Reporter
Rita Skeeter is a reporter for the Daily Prophet and Witch Weekly. She writes sensational stories for tabloids. She uses magical tools like the Quick-Quotes Quill. Rita is an unregistered Animagus. This means she can turn into a beetle to spy on people. She does this many times in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. As a reporter who makes up information, she causes trouble for Harry and his friends. She is a brief but unwilling helper in Order of the Phoenix. She has curly blonde hair, jeweled glasses, and long, crimson nails. She has a crocodile-skin handbag and a strong jaw.
Harry first meets Rita when she interviews the Triwizard Tournament contestants. Her article about Harry is full of lies. When Rita overhears information, the book hints at her presence. Viktor Krum says Hermione has a water beetle in her hair. At the Yule Ball, Rita overhears Hagrid telling Madame Maxime that he is half-giant. Harry notices a beetle on a nearby statue. During a Divinations class, Harry falls asleep and hears an "insect clicking." Rita prints an article that makes Hagrid seem dangerous. Parents get scared about a "ferocious" giant teaching their children. When Rita meets Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Hogsmeade, Hermione insults her. Rita gets revenge by writing a nasty story about Hermione. It is based on false rumors from Pansy Parkinson. It says Hermione uses love potions to get famous wizards. Rita's last bad article says Harry is "disturbed and dangerous." It uses comments from Draco and his Slytherin friends. Hermione finally discovers how Rita spies on others. She forces her to "keep her quill to herself for a full year." She threatens to report her as an illegal Animagus. Her last article makes Harry look bad. It is why Cornelius Fudge refuses to believe Harry about Voldemort's return. It also starts the Ministry's campaign against Harry and Dumbledore.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hermione forces Rita to interview Harry about Voldemort's return. Hermione threatens to reveal Rita is an Animagus. Rita then has to publish her story in The Quibbler. Rita briefly appears in Half-Blood Prince. Harry is angry to see her with a notebook at Dumbledore's funeral. Rita is not in Deathly Hallows. But she is mentioned often, usually negatively. This is about her book about Dumbledore, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. The book makes Dumbledore look very bad. But it is mostly true, which shocks Harry. It is hinted that she got some information unfairly or illegally. Rowling said that Rita would "naturally" write a book about Harry after he defeated Voldemort. She said it would be "one quarter truth to three-quarters rubbish." She also suggested Rita would write "Snape: Scoundrel or Saint?"
It is thought that Rowling's difficult relationship with the press inspired this character. But Rowling said in 2000 that the character was planned before she became famous. Rita was meant to be in Philosopher's Stone. Rowling said, "when Harry walks into the Leaky Cauldron for the first time and everyone says, 'Mr. Potter you're back!', I wanted to put a journalist in there. She wasn't called Rita then but she was a woman. And then I thought, as I looked at the plot overall, I thought, that's not really where she fits best, she fits best in Four when Harry's supposed to come to terms with his fame."
Miranda Richardson played Rita in the movie Goblet of Fire and again in Deathly Hallows.
Hepzibah Smith: Collector of Antiques
Hepzibah Smith is shown in Dumbledore's Pensieve. She is part of memories Dumbledore shows Harry to learn about Voldemort's past. She was a very rich, well-born old witch. She loved collecting old and special items. In the memory, Hepzibah wears long pink robes. When she sits in her throne-like chair, she looks like a large "melting iced cake." She wears a big, fancy ginger wig and puts red makeup on her cheeks.
Tom Riddle, who had just left Hogwarts, worked for Places in Harry Potter#Borgin & Burkes. He visited Hepzibah to offer to buy some goblin-made armor she owned. He gave her flowers and charmed her with compliments. Hepzibah was charmed by Riddle. She showed him her most prized possessions: a cup owned by her ancestor Helga Hufflepuff, and a locket that belonged to Salazar Slytherin. She had bought the locket from Borgin and Burkes. Two days after this memory, Hepzibah died. Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket were never found.

She is the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy. She is the middle sister. Her aunt Walburga removed her from the family tapestry in Number 12, Grimmauld Place. She was cut off from her family because she married Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born wizard. She was Sirius Black's favorite cousin. Andromeda named her daughter "Nymphadora," a name typical of her family. She is good at household spells and keeping things clean. Her husband and daughter are not as good at this.
She is not introduced until the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She looks a lot like her sister Bellatrix. Harry even thinks she is Bellatrix when he first meets her. But Andromeda looks kind and has soft brown hair instead of black. She and Ted are later questioned very harshly for information about Harry. The war with Voldemort and his followers takes a heavy toll on Andromeda. Her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and sister are all killed. Rowling said that after the war, Andromeda raises Teddy Lupin, her grandson. She is never seen in the films.
Ted Tonks: Muggle-born Wizard
Edward "Ted" Tonks is a Muggle-born wizard. He is described as a "fair-haired, big-bellied man." He marries Andromeda Black. Their marriage caused his wife to be cut off by her strict pure-blood family. Ted and Andromeda are the parents of Nymphadora Tonks. Ted plays an active role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. At the start of the book, his home is a hiding place for Harry and Hagrid. They are running from Voldemort. His home holds the Portkey that helps Harry escape to The Burrow. He excitedly introduces Harry to his parents at the Quidditch World Cup. He announces that he joined the Puddlemere United reserve team. He is one of many Hogwarts students, past and present, who fight in the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows. He is among those who survive the first fight. Harry sees him helping Neville Longbottom carry the body of Colin Creevey. He is four years older than Harry in Gryffindor.
Sean Biggerstaff played Oliver Wood in the first two films and again in the eighth film.
The Muggle Prime Minister
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, called the Muggle Prime Minister by wizards, gets a visit from Cornelius Fudge and Rufus Scrimgeour. This happens in the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Rowling uses flashbacks to show how the Prime Minister knows about the wizarding world. He has several meetings with Fudge. These include his first night as Prime Minister, the night Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban, news of the Quidditch World Cup incident, and the announcement of dragons and a sphinx for the Triwizard Tournament. Finally, he learns about the Azkaban mass break-out from the fifth book. Rowling wanted to include the Prime Minister scene in earlier books. But she thought it fit best in the sixth book.
In the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Prime Minister remembers his day. One of his political rivals had been criticizing him for recent disasters in Britain. Readers soon learn that these disasters are caused by Voldemort and his followers. He also discovers that he is protected by an Auror, Kingsley Shacklebolt, who now works in his office.
