People from the "Real World"

Jam: Jonathan Andrew Manley

Jonathan Andrew Manley, known as "Jam", is a boy from Ohio. He first appears in Rachel Cosgrove Payes' book The Hidden Valley of Oz. Jam, along with two guinea pigs and a pet rat named Percy, arrived in Gillikin Country on a large kite. After escaping from a villain named Terp the Terrible, Jam became friends with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Hungry Tiger. They all worked together to defeat Terp. After Terp was defeated, Jam enjoyed a big celebration before Princess Ozma and the Wizard of Oz sent him back home to Ohio.

Jam did not appear in later stories by Rachel Cosgrove Payes.

Jenny Jump: The Part-Fairy Girl

Jenny Jump is a key character in the Oz books by John R. Neill, starting with The Wonder City of Oz in 1940. She was named after Jenny Jump Mountain in New Jersey, where Neill lived.

Jenny starts as a fifteen-year-old girl. One day, she catches a leprechaun named Siko Pompus trying to steal her cheese. Because she is so clever, she makes him grant her a wish. She wishes to become a fairy. However, during the magic process, Jenny loses focus, and the leprechaun escapes. This leaves Jenny as part-fairy and part-human. Still, she gains amazing new powers! With her fairy foot, she can leap all the way to the Land of Oz to begin her adventures.

Jenny doesn't like the simple, single-color clothes that Ozites usually wear. So, she opens a shop with a magic machine that dresses people based on their personalities.

In some versions of The Wonder City of Oz, Jenny is encouraged to run against Princess Ozma to rule Oz. The Ozites decide to use shoes as votes in this "Ozelection." Also, near the end of the book, the Wizard casts a spell to make Jenny younger and more obedient. This spell also makes her bad temper, envy, and ambition appear as creatures. However, Jenny seems to return to her old self in later books.

Jenny is often joined by a Munchkin boy named Number Nine. He loves her, even though she treats him a bit like a servant. He wears special whistling breeches so she always knows where he is.

In The Scalawagons of Oz, Jenny is a main character again. She helps search for stolen magical cars. In Lucky Bucky in Oz, she helps plan a big party in the Emerald City, but Number Nine has a bigger role in that story.

In The Runaway in Oz, Jenny starts the story by arguing with Scraps the Patchwork Girl. After Scraps runs away, Jenny spends the rest of the book helping to find her.

Notta Bit More: The Circus Clown

Notta Bit More is a circus clown from North America.

He first appears in The Cowardly Lion of Oz (1923). He accidentally finds a magic phrase that sends him and an orphan boy named Bobby Downs (also called Bob Up) to the Munchkin Country kingdom of Mudge. The king of Mudge, Mustafa, wants them to bring him the Cowardly Lion. Notta Bit More and Bobby meet the Cowardly Lion, and he joins their group. A bird named Nickadoodle also joins because she falls in love with Notta. After King Mustafa is defeated by Princess Ozma, Notta Bit More accepts Ozma's offer to live in the Land of Oz. He lives in a tent outside the Royal Palace and adopts Bobby.

Notta Bit More also appears briefly in Return to Oz.

Peter Brown: The Athletic Boy

Peter Brown is a boy from Philadelphia and the main character in several Oz books by Ruth Plumly Thompson. He is first introduced in The Gnome King of Oz (1927). He also appears in Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz (1929) and Pirates in Oz (1931). In the first and third books, the Nome King Ruggedo is the main bad guy. In Pumpkinhead, Peter and Jack face a "Red Baron" who wants to take over nearby lands and then the Emerald City. Peter is a great baseball pitcher, and his athletic skills often help him overcome challenges.

Robin Brown: The Boy from Roundabout

Robin Brown is the main character of Merry Go Round in Oz (1963). He is a small boy who was raised by a family of much larger boys. He escapes to Oz on Merry Go Round, a living merry-go-round horse. For a short time, he becomes the King of Roundabout, even though he doesn't want to be.

Speedy: The Rocket Pilot

Speedy is the main character of The Yellow Knight of Oz (1930) and Speedy in Oz (1934). He is the nephew of William J. Harmstead, an inventor from Long Island. Speedy's uncle raised him after his parents were lost at sea. Speedy first comes to Oz when his uncle's rocket ship, which Speedy was testing, flies out of control. He lands in an underground nation called Subterranea. Speedy escapes to the surface and finds himself in Winkie Country. There, he joins a quest to save the Yellow Knight's kingdom from a bad spell.

Four years later, Speedy and his uncle are looking for dinosaur bones in Wyoming. A magic geyser brings a large dinosaur skeleton to life. Speedy and the dinosaur, named Terrybubble, land on Umbrella Island, which flies through the sky. Speedy soon discovers a plan to kidnap Gureeda, the island king's daughter, whom Speedy is starting to like.

Emerald City Residents

Davy Jones: The Wooden Whale

Davy Jones is a wooden whale who appears in Lucky Bucky in Oz (1942).

Davy Jones was once a ship for pirates. But he left them on an island they attacked. He then met Bucky Jones, who was not a pirate. They traveled the ocean together. They faced many challenges on their way to the Land of Oz. The Wizard of Oz later offered Davy Jones a job. He now lives in Lake Quad, which is near the Emerald City.

Fans really like Davy as one of John R. Neill's most creative characters.

Herby: The Cough Syrup Doctor

Herby is a character in Ruth Plumly Thompson's Oz books. He was first seen in her 1928 book, The Giant Horse of Oz. Herby was a doctor who had been turned into a bottle of cough syrup by the witch Mombi. Prince Philidor of Ozure Isles freed him from the spell early in the book. However, Herby kept a three-shelf medicine chest inside his chest and had cough drop eyes. By the end of the book, he became the official Court Physician in the Emerald City palace. Since Ozites are almost never sick and cannot die naturally, he doesn't have much work, only treating occasional injuries.

Herby's name likely comes from the medicinal herbs that would have been in his chest. He appeared in several other books, including Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz, Ojo in Oz, The Wishing Horse of Oz, Handy Mandy in Oz, and Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz, though never as a main character.

Humpy: The Live Test Dummy

Humpy is a live test dummy who appears in The Lost King of Oz (1925).

He was originally in Hollywood. Dorothy briefly visited and brought him to the Land of Oz. After escaping from the Back-woodsmen, Humpy and Dorothy met Kabumpo, who carried them on his back. Humpy, Dorothy, and Kabumpo then met Mombi, Snip, Tora, and Pajuka. Everyone thought Humpy was the long-lost King Pastoria. But it turned out that Tora was actually King Pastoria. King Pastoria allowed his daughter, Princess Ozma, to keep ruling the Emerald City. He then opened a tailor shop in the Emerald City, with Humpy working as his tailor's dummy.

Snip: The Tailor's Apprentice

Snip is a boy who appears in The Lost King of Oz (1925).

He was captured by Mombi to help her and Pajuku find King Pastoria. While traveling, they met an amnesiac tailor named Tora, who joined their search. When Dorothy, Humpy, and Kabumpo met them, Snip was among those who believed Humpy was the enchanted King Pastoria. However, Tora was actually the enchanted King Pastoria. After King Pastoria allowed his daughter Princess Ozma to continue ruling the Emerald City, he became a tailor, and Snip became his apprentice.

Sir Hokus of Pokes: The Obsolete Knight

Sir Hokus of Pokes is a character first introduced in The Royal Book of Oz (1921) by Ruth Plumly Thompson. His name sounds like "hocus pocus". He is an elderly knight who doesn't realize that knights are no longer needed, much like Don Quixote. Sir Hokus was found in the kingdom of Pokes, where he had been sleeping for centuries. Pokes is a small, very sleepy kingdom in Winkie Country. After joining Dorothy, Cowardly Lion, Comfortable Camel, and Doubtful Dromedary on an adventure, Sir Hokus returns with Dorothy to live at the Palace in the Emerald City.

In later books, he goes on several quests with the main characters. He has a very important adventure in The Yellow Knight of Oz, where he marries Princess Marygolden of Corabia. In that book, we learn that his current state was caused by magic from the Sultan of Samandra. At the end of the novel, he becomes the younger Corum, Prince of Corumbia, the Yellow Knight of Oz. A magic date pit turns his silver armor golden and transforms him into a young, blond-haired man. Even though his appearance changed, he was still called Sir Hokus for the rest of the book. He also gets a new animal friend, Stampedro.

Fans did not like this change to his character. In John R. Neill's books, Hokus usually goes back to his old self, like in The Scalawagons of Oz where he play-fights a two-headed Dragonette.

Percy: The Smart-Aleck Rat

Percy is a laboratory rat from Ohio. He first appears in Rachel Cosgrove Payes' The Hidden Valley of Oz (1951). He came to the Land of Oz with Jam and two guinea pigs, landing in Gillikin Country. During the quest to defeat Terp the Terrible, Percy ate some of Terp's special muffins, which made him grow ten times his normal size! After Terp was defeated and Jam went back to Ohio, Percy convinced the Wizard of Oz to keep him permanently enlarged. Percy has a "smart aleck" personality and often calls everyone "kiddo."

In Payes' The Wicked Witch of Oz, Percy went with Dorothy Gale when the Wicked Witch of the South woke up.

Some of Percy's unusual traits, like calling everyone "kiddo," were added by editors to make the book seem more modern in 1951.

When he pardons Dorothy and Toto, Dorothy tells him that Glinda the Good Witch said Oz was in danger. The Great Royal Marshmallow helps Dorothy by giving her supplies for her journey, like baskets of fruits, candy, and nuts. He then has his Royal Sheriff take Dorothy and Toto to the border, telling Dorothy that Princess Gayelette can help her.

Jester: The Tricked Servant

The Jester is a servant of Princess Gayelette and Prince Quelala.

In Dorothy of Oz, the Jester found a wand belonging to the Wicked Witch of the West. The ghost of the Wicked Witch possessed him. Under her control, the Jester used the wand to turn Princess Gayelette, Prince Quelala, and their dinner guests into China Dolls. He also turned Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion into China Dolls and kidnapped the China Princess. When Dorothy and Toto arrived, the Jester pointed them to the castle. When Dorothy learned what he had done, she found that the Jester had also turned Toto into a China Doll. Dorothy came up with a plan to trick the Jester. She reminded him that jesters are supposed to make people happy. This made the Jester freeze, and he gave up the wand. The Wicked Witch's ghost faded away, and everyone returned to normal. Princess Gayelette allowed the Jester to stay and entertain them again.

The Jester appears in Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (based on the Dorothy of Oz book), voiced by Martin Short. In the film, he is said to be the Wicked Witch of the West's brother. He captures important people in Oz and turns them into puppets.

Leopard with the Changeable Spots: "Spots"

The Leopard with the Changeable Spots, nicknamed "Spots", is a leopard who lives in a jungle in Gillikin Country, as seen in The Hidden Valley of Oz. He gets his name because the markings on his fur change. They change randomly and also show his feelings. For example, they can shift from "pink diamonds, to violet hearts, to spinning pinwheels." When he is unsure, he gets "blue question marks," and when he is angry, he has "brightly colored swords and muskets spinning madly on his back." Because he is so unique, other leopards consider him an outcast. Dorothy's group becomes friends with him and nicknames him "Spots." He joins them on their quest to defeat Terp the Terrible.

They moved in with a farmer and his wife, who had let Jam stay at their farm for the night.

Prince Pompadore: The Pumperdink Prince

Prince Pompadore (called Pompa for short) is the prince of Pumperdink. He first appears in Kabumpo in Oz. He is the son of King Pompus. Kabumpo the Elephant is his teacher and protector. The story is about Kabumpo and Pompa searching for the "proper princess" mentioned in a strange prophecy. After many funny adventures, Pompa finds his future wife, Princess Peg Amy of Suntop Mountain. While Kabumpo becomes a regular character in Thompson's books, Pompa appears less often.

Pompadore appears again in The Purple Prince of Oz ten years later when his family is kidnapped by the wicked fairy Faleero. He and Peg Amy have a daughter named Pajonia. This makes Pompa the only human character in Thompson's Oz books who is clearly stated to have had a child during the "present day" stories.

Tugg: The Talking Tugboat

Tugg is a wooden tugboat.

In Dorothy of Oz, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion build Tugg from the branches of Talking Trees along the Munchkin River. They use straw to make him waterproof and vines for ropes. Dorothy uses water and red berries to make paint and draw Tugg's mouth. When Tugg is named, he starts to speak and thanks the group for building him. Tugg tells the Talking Trees he will travel the Munchkin River and tell them what he sees. Dorothy and her friends board Tugg and travel downstream. When Dorothy's group is stuck in the Gamekeeper's maze, Tugg uses his foghorn to help them find their way out. Tugg continues to carry the group down the Munchkin River until they reach the Munchkin Village. When Tugg gets close to the Dainty China Country, Dorothy and her friends get off. Tugg heads back to the Talking Trees to share his journey. Dorothy tells Tugg they will meet him again soon.

Wiser the Owl: The Molasses Magnet

Wiser the Owl is an owl who always seems to get stuck in molasses.

In Dorothy of Oz, Dorothy and Toto meet Wiser. He says he got his name because he gets wiser every day. When Dorothy tells him she is looking for Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Glinda, Wiser tells her she is in Gillikin Country. He advises her to go to Candy Country and ask the Great Royal Marshmallow for help. Wiser points Dorothy towards Candy Country and leaves, warning her to "watch out for the molasses." Unfortunately, Toto doesn't listen.

Later, Dorothy and her friends meet Wiser again. He tells Dorothy to build a boat from the Talking Trees to travel down the Munchkin River. Before Dorothy faces the Jester, she meets Wiser again. She asks him to help the Cowardly Lion get into his life-size china doll disguise. After the Jester is freed, Wiser appears by the river near Princess Gayelette's castle with Tugg and the dragons Dorothy met earlier.

Wiser the Owl appears in Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (based on the Dorothy of Oz book), voiced by Oliver Platt.

Witch of the North: Tattypoo

The Witch of the North was not named in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or any of Baum's other Oz books. However, Baum named her Locasta in the 1902 musical. Ruth Plumly Thompson, who continued writing Oz books after Baum, changed the character and named her Tattypoo.

After Shirley Sunshine is rescued, Belfaygore's beard disappears. The Wizard of Oz breaks the enchantment. After this, Belfaygore promises never to grow a beard again and finally marries Shirley.
