Washington County facts for kids
Washington County is a name used for many different areas in the United States. It is the name for 30 counties and one special area called a parish. All of these places are named after George Washington. He was a very important general during the American Revolutionary War. He also became the first President of the United States.
In total, 32 states and one district have, or used to have, a place called Washington County.

Counties That Used to Exist
Some places named Washington County no longer exist. They were either changed or combined with other areas.
- Washington County, South Dakota: This county existed from 1883 to 1943. It was later divided and merged into other counties. This happened because of money problems in South Dakota at the time. The areas became part of Jackson County, Pennington County, and Shannon County.
- Washington County, District of Columbia: This was a county in the District of Columbia. It was removed in 1871. All other counties in that District were also removed at the same time.
