Kabul, the capital city, is the only place in Afghanistan with more than 1 million people. Other places are smaller cities and towns. In 2020, Afghanistan's official statistics estimated that about 32.2 million people lived in the country. Around 7.8 million of these people lived in urban areas, which are cities and towns. The rest lived in rural areas, also known as the countryside.
