Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Evangelicalism is a type of Christian faith. It is a big part of Protestant Christianity. Some Catholic Christians also use the term.

Evangelicals believe in sharing their faith with others. This is called evangelism. They also believe in a personal change, often called being "born again." Believing in the Bible is very important to them. They try to live a good, moral life. This applies to their personal choices and how they act in society.

The word "evangelical" can mean different things. In Europe and Latin America, it often just means Protestant. This helps tell them apart from Catholic Christians. Some Christian groups, called denominations, have "evangelical" in their name. This often means they are more traditional in their beliefs.

In 2016, there were about 619 million evangelicals worldwide. This means about one out of every four Christians is an evangelical. Many evangelicals live in the United States. They make up about a quarter of the US population. There are also many evangelicals in Latin America, Africa, China, and Korea.

Evangelicals are found in many Christian groups. These include most Baptist churches and Pentecostals. Some Methodists and Presbyterians are also evangelical. Many independent Christian churches are evangelical too.

Billy Graham was a very famous evangelical. He lived in the last 100 years. He traveled the world to preach. Millions of people became Christians because of his work.
