Lisa Anne Loeb (born March 11, 1968) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, author, and actress. She became famous with her song "Stay (I Missed You)" from the movie Reality Bites in 1994. This song was special because it was the first time an artist had a number one hit on the Billboard charts without being signed to a record label!
Lisa also had other popular songs like "Do You Sleep?" and "I Do". She has released several successful albums, including Tails and Firecracker, which both sold a lot of copies.
Besides music, Lisa Loeb has appeared in many TV shows and movies. She was in Gossip Girl and Fuller House. She also had her own TV shows, Dweezil & Lisa (about cooking) and Number 1 Single. Lisa has also acted in films like House on Haunted Hill and Fright Night.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Lisa Loeb was born in Bethesda, Maryland, and grew up in Dallas, Texas. Her mom, Gail, was involved with a medical society, and her dad, Peter, was a doctor. Lisa has a younger sister, Debbie, who is also a songwriter.
When she was young, Lisa first learned to play the piano. But later, she switched to the guitar. She went to an all-girls private school called The Hockaday School. For two years, she even had her own radio show on a local station! After high school, she went to Brown University and studied literature.
Music Career Highlights
Starting Out and First Bands (1980s–1993)
While at Brown University in the 1980s, Lisa Loeb and her friend Elizabeth Mitchell started a band called Liz and Lisa. Another future singer, Duncan Sheik, played guitar with them. They released two albums on their own. After college, Lisa also formed a band called Nine Stories. She made a cassette tape called Purple Tape in 1992, which had early versions of her popular songs. She sold these tapes at her shows.
Lisa also performed by herself, playing acoustic guitar in coffee shops and rock clubs in New York City and other places. She became known for her live performances.
"Stay (I Missed You)" Becomes a Hit (1994)
Lisa's big break came thanks to her friend, actor Ethan Hawke. He lived across the street from her in New York. Lisa gave Ethan a recording of her song "Stay (I Missed You)". Ethan then gave it to director Ben Stiller for his movie Reality Bites. Stiller loved the song and decided to use it in the movie's ending!
"Stay (I Missed You)" quickly became a number one hit in America. This was amazing because Lisa was the first artist to have a number one song without being signed to a record label! The song sold so many copies that it was certified Gold. Lisa and her band, Nine Stories, were even nominated for a Grammy Award and won an award at the Brit Awards for Best International Newcomer.
In 2019, Lisa released a special red vinyl record of "Stay (I Missed You)" for its 25th anniversary. She also performed the song at a special screening of Reality Bites with the movie's stars.
