List of dams and reservoirs in Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dams are like giant walls built across rivers. They help us store water, control floods, and even make electricity! In Texas, dams and the lakes they create (called reservoirs) are super important. They provide drinking water for cities, water for farms, and fun places for fishing and boating.

A "major dam" is usually very tall, about 50 feet (15 meters) high, and can hold a lot of water – at least 5,000 acre-feet (that's like 1.6 billion gallons!). Some dams are considered major even if they aren't as tall, as long as they can hold an enormous amount of water, like 25,000 acre-feet (over 8 billion gallons!).
