List of tallest buildings in Montreal facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Montreal is a big city in Canada, and it's home to many tall buildings! This article lists the tallest skyscrapers in Montreal, Quebec. There are over 60 buildings in the city that are taller than 100 meters (328 feet).

The very tallest building in Montreal, if you measure to the top of its roof, is the 1000 de La Gauchetière. It has 51 floors and stands 205 meters (673 feet) tall.

However, if you include decorative spires (pointy tops) that are part of the building's design, then 1250 René-Lévesque is the tallest. It reaches 226.5 meters (743 feet) with its spire. Experts who measure buildings often include spires in their height definitions.

Montreal has special rules about how tall buildings can be. No building can be taller than Mount Royal, a mountain in the city. This means buildings cannot go above 232.5 meters (764 feet) above sea level, or 200 meters (656 feet) from the ground. Most buildings in the downtown area are limited to 120 meters (394 feet). The 1000 de La Gauchetière was built just before these rules came into effect in 1992.

Montreal started building skyscrapers a long time ago. The first tall building was the eight-story New York Life Insurance Building in 1888. Most of Montreal's tall buildings were built in two main periods: from the late 1920s to the early 1930s, and then from the early 1960s to the early 1990s. In recent years, especially since 2014, Montreal has been building many new high-rises again!

Tallest Buildings in Montreal

This list shows buildings in Montreal that are at least 100 meters (328 feet) tall. We measure their height using standards set by experts, which includes spires and other architectural parts, but not antennas. If two buildings have the same height, they share a rank. Some very tall structures, like the Tour de Montréal, are included for comparison, even though they are not regular buildings.
