List of towns in Wales facts for kids
In Wales, just like in England and Northern Ireland, a town is a place that has been officially given a special document called a "town charter" by the King or Queen. This charter gives the place certain rights and powers.
Long ago, in 1536, 55 places in Wales were called "boroughs" and could send people to Parliament. Later, in 1835, a law changed things, and only 20 Welsh boroughs were officially recognized. As more places grew, some became boroughs, like Wrexham and Merthyr Tydfil. Other places became "urban districts," which was a different type of local area. Today, a law from 1972 lets local communities in Wales decide to call themselves "town councils."
Cities are also listed here in bold. For a long time, a place was called a city if it had a big church called a cathedral. For example, St Davids became a city this way, even though it only has about 2,000 people. More recently, St Asaph became a city in 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
