Mighty Ducks (also known as Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series) is an American animated television series that first aired in 1996. It was shown on ABC and a special TV block called The Disney Afternoon.

This show was inspired by the live-action The Mighty Ducks movies and the NHL team, the Anaheim Ducks. But here's the cool part: instead of human hockey players, this show is about a team of human-like ducks who play hockey and fight crime!

There are 26 episodes in total. You can watch the series on the streaming service Disney+, where it has been available since November 2019. The main theme song, "Ducks Rock," was created by Carl Swander Johnson and sung by Mickey Thomas.

There was even a fun attraction at DisneyQuest, an indoor theme park, called Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam. It was based on the show, and you could see Wildwing, one of the main characters, in the game.

The Story of the Mighty Ducks

In a different universe, there's a planet called "Puckworld." It's a super icy place, perfect for the ducks who live there because they love hockey more than anything! For them, hockey isn't just a game; it's their whole way of life.

Long ago, a lizard-like race called Saurians tried to take over Puckworld. A brave duck named Drake DuCaine saved the planet using a special high-tech goalie mask. This mask helped him send the Saurians away to a mysterious "Dimensional Limbo."

Now, the last of the Saurians, led by the evil Lord Dragaunus, escape from Limbo. They come back to Puckworld with an army of robot ships and take over the planet. But a resistance group forms, led by a duck named Canard. He finds Drake DuCaine's mask, which lets him see the Saurians even when they try to hide.

Canard gathers a team of brave ducks: Wildwing, Nosedive, Tanya, Duke, Mallory, and Grin. Their mission is to destroy Dragaunus's main base, the Master Tower, and free Puckworld. They succeed, but Dragaunus and his team escape through a portal in their ship, the Raptor. Canard and his team follow them in their own ship, the Aerowing.

Inside the portal, Dragaunus tries to get rid of the ducks. Canard bravely sacrifices himself to save his friends. Before he does, he gives the special mask and leadership of the team to Wildwing Flashblade, his best friend. Both ships end up in a different dimension, landing in Anaheim, California, on Earth!

On Earth, the ducks meet Phil Palmfeather, a human who helps them become a real NHL hockey team. Their arena, called The Pond in the show, has a hockey rink that hides their ship's landing pad and their secret headquarters. The Ducks and Dragaunus continue their fight on Earth. Dragaunus often tries to find new power sources for his ship, but other villains also challenge the Mighty Ducks.

Meet the Characters

Main Team Members

MightyDtvs
The Mighty Ducks in action, from left: Nosedive, Tanya, Grin, Wildwing (center), Mallory, Duke.
  • Wildwing Flashblade (voiced by Ian Ziering)
    • Wildwing was saved by Canard on Puckworld. He becomes the leader of the Ducks, both on the ice and in their fight against evil. He's the team's goalie and is known for being super tough. Wildwing is smart, fair, and protects his younger brother, Nosedive. He uses Drake DuCaine's mask and a special Puck Launcher on his arm. In real life, Wildwing is the mascot for the Anaheim Ducks hockey team.
  • Nosedive Flashblade (voiced by Steve Mackall)
    • Nosedive is Wildwing's younger brother. He's the most impulsive and playful member of the team. He's more childish and easy-going than the others, often looking to Wildwing for help. Nosedive is friendly and becomes good friends with Grin and human friends Thrash and Mookie. He uses a Puck Blaster and rides a cool Duckcycle. On the ice, he's the left winger.
  • Duke L'Orange (voiced by Jeff Bennett)
    • Duke used to be a famous jewel thief on Puckworld, but he changed his ways to fight Dragaunus. He mostly uses a golden sword called a Ducksaber and is good at picking locks. Duke is usually calm, though sometimes a bit proud. He has an eyepatch and a chipped beak, possibly from his past adventures. He's the team's center.
  • Mallory McMallard (voiced by Jennifer Hale)
    • Mallory is a feisty redhead who knows a lot about Puckworld's martial arts. She often uses a Puck Blaster. She's quick to speak her mind, especially about Nosedive's silly actions. Mallory has a strong military background and is very disciplined. She can be stubborn, which is both a strength and a weakness. Mallory is the team's right winger.
  • Tanya Vanderflock (voiced by April Winchell)
    • Tanya is the team's super smart genius. Everyone, even Wildwing, asks her for advice. She's great with machines and uses her Omnitool for many projects. Even though she's smart, she has bad allergies (even to feathers!) and can be a bit shy. She makes up for it with her common sense and funny remarks. On the ice, Tanya is the left defenseman.
  • Check "Grin" Hardwing (voiced by Brad Garrett)
    • Grin is a huge, super-strong duck with a calm, Zen-like way of thinking. Unlike many strong characters, Grin is wise and doesn't let anger control him. He rarely uses weapons, relying on his strength and wisdom. He has a strong sense of honor and is a loyal friend to Nosedive. When he was younger, Grin had a terrible temper, but he learned to control it from his hockey master, Tai Quack Do. Grin is the right defenseman.

Friends and Allies

  • Canard Thunderbeak (voiced by Townsend Coleman)
    • Canard was Wildwing's best friend and the original leader of the Mighty Ducks. He bravely sacrificed himself to save the team from an electromagnetic worm, getting trapped in dimensional limbo. Wildwing believes Canard is still alive and hopes to find him one day.
  • Phil Palmfeather (voiced by James Belushi)
    • Phil is the Ducks' human manager for their hockey team. He sometimes cares more about silly promotions and autograph signings than their hero work, but he knows they do good.
  • Captain Klegghorn (voiced by Dennis Franz)
    • He's the head of the Anaheim Police Department. At first, he doesn't trust the Ducks because he can't believe Dragaunus is real. But eventually, they work together, especially when the Saurians take over the Ducks' headquarters.
  • Thrash & Mookie (voiced by Jeff Bennett & April Winchell)
    • Nosedive's human friends who dress like punk rockers. They run a comic book store called "Captain Comics," where Nosedive is a regular customer. They were the first humans the Ducks met on Earth.
  • Bernie "Buzz" Blitzman (voiced by Jeff Bennett)
    • Buzz is a young, super-smart orphan boy who is a big fan of the Ducks, especially Mallory. He often helps the Ducks with his clever ideas.
  • B.R.A.W.N. (voiced by Frank Welker)
    • B.R.A.W.N. stands for Bounty Robotic Assault and Weapons Negotiator. He's a huge robot bounty hunter from space, originally sent to capture Dragaunus. He was reprogrammed to fight the Ducks, but Tanya managed to reprogram him again to help them.

Villains

  • The Saurians – These are a race of lizard-like humanoids.
    • Lord Dragaunus (voiced by Tim Curry)
      • Dragaunus is the evil, dinosaur/dragon-like leader of the Saurians. He's big, strong, and can breathe fire! He wants to take over the world and doesn't care who he works with to do it. He gets very angry when his helpers, Siege, Chameleon, and Wraith, fail him. Most of his plans involve finding new power for his ship, The Raptor, after the Ducks damaged its original power source.
    • Siege (voiced by Clancy Brown)
      • Siege is an Ankylosaurus-like soldier. He's very aggressive and hates the Ducks, especially Grin, because Grin can often match him in a fight. Siege loves building weapons and vehicles to use against the Ducks.
    • Chameleon (voiced by Frank Welker)
      • Chameleon is a shapeshifting chameleon-like Saurian. He can change his size and strength, but his transformations are often not perfect, which gives him away. He also wastes his powers doing silly impressions of human celebrities. Dragaunus gets annoyed by his antics.
    • Wraith (voiced by Tony Jay)
      • Wraith is a Saurian warlock who uses dark magic. He's smarter than Siege or Chameleon, but Dragaunus doesn't like his magic and prefers technology. Wraith is often gloomy and predicts that their missions will fail, and he's usually right!
    • Hunter Drones
      • These are Dragaunus's robot foot soldiers. They have blasters on their hands but are usually easy for the Ducks to destroy. Dragaunus sometimes destroys them himself when he's really angry.
  • Dr. Droid (voiced by Charlie Adler)
    • Dr. Droid used to be a human named Otto Maton, but now he's a cyborg. He wants to turn everyone into robots. The Ducks fight him twice.
  • Asteroth (voiced by W. Morgan Sheppard)
    • Asteroth is an evil wizard from another dimension. He can turn into a huge red dragon if he has enough power. The Ducks fight him two times.
  • Phineas P. Viper (voiced by Xander Berkeley)
    • An industrialist who helped Dragaunus. In the future, he rules Earth while the Saurians are conquering other galaxies. He even merged himself with his pet snakes!
  • Daddy-O Cool (voiced by Jim Cummings)
    • A strange beat poet who loves monster trucks. He fell into toxic waste, which changed him. He tried to pollute the world's water supply to make it "cooler."
  • Dr. Wally Pretorious (voiced by Matt Frewer)
    • A mad scientist who likes to mix different types of DNA. He tried to trap the Ducks in a small town to experiment on them. He's also a big fan of Dragaunus.
  • Lucretia DeCoy (voiced by Kath Soucie)
    • Lucretia DeCoy is a traitor to the duck race and a spy for the Saurians. She tried to trick the Ducks, but Tanya figured her out.
  • Baron Von Licktenstamp (voiced by David Hyde Pierce)
    • A German hunter who owns an island. He captures Wildwing, Tanya, and Duke and hunts them for sport, using robotic animals.
  • Stanley Strazinski (voiced by Jim Cummings)
    • A former hockey player with a violent temper. Dragaunus turned him into a monster to fight the Ducks. Grin's words helped Stanley change his ways, and he became a referee.
  • Mondo-Man (voiced by Eddie Deezen and Jeff Bennett)
    • Alvin Yasbeck was a regular comic book customer who thought he could be a superhero. Dragaunus tricked him, gave him powers, and made him steal for him.
  • Emperor Charg (voiced by Jim Cummings)
    • A mean alien ruler who runs Space Hockey, a tournament where losers are disintegrated!
  • Emperor Xyloid & Commander Xenon (both voiced by Jim Cummings)
    • These Abominable Snowman-like aliens came to Earth to freeze the whole planet so they could live on it.
