ODI and T20I kit

As of 8 November 2024

The Nepal men's national cricket team is also known as the "Rhinos" or "Gorkhalis". This team plays for Nepal in international cricket matches. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) manages the team. Nepal has been a special member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1996.

The team gained Twenty20 International (T20I) status in 2014. They also earned One Day International (ODI) status in 2018. This means they can play in the highest levels of these shorter cricket games.

Nepal has played 73 ODI matches, winning 35 of them. They are currently ranked 18th in the world for ODIs. The team has not yet qualified for the main Cricket World Cup tournament. However, they have played in the World Cup Qualifiers three times.

In Twenty20 International (T20I) matches, Nepal has played 95 games, winning 53. They are ranked 17th in the world for T20Is. Nepal has played in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup twice, in 2014 and 2024. They also took part in the Asia Cup in 2023 and the Asian Games three times.

How Nepal's Cricket Began

Early Days of Cricket

Cricket in Nepal started as a sport for the rich and powerful. Only the ruling Rana family and other important people played it.

In 1946, the Cricket Association of Nepal was created. Its goal was to help more wealthy people play cricket. After Nepal became a democracy in 1951, cricket started to become popular with everyone. In 1961, the Cricket Association of Nepal joined the National Sports Council. This helped spread cricket across the country. But for a long time, most games were only played in Kathmandu Valley.

Joining the ICC

In the 1980s, Nepal's travel and communication improved. This allowed cricket to grow outside Kathmandu. In 1988, Nepal became an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council. In the early 1990s, a big plan was started to grow cricket. This included setting up regional and district tournaments. More schools also started playing cricket.

Many people in Nepal quickly became interested in cricket. So many wanted to play that there weren't enough places. More facilities were built in the mid-1990s. Nepal became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council on February 2, 1996. That same year, the national team played its first game in the 1996 ACC Trophy in Kuala Lumpur.

By 1998, Nepal had enough cricket facilities to host the ACC Trophy. Games were played in Lalitpur, Kirtipur (at TU Cricket Ground), and Kathmandu.

Today, Nepal has one of the biggest fan bases among ICC Associate Members. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) was suspended by the ICC in 2016. This was because of too much government involvement. But it was brought back in October 2019.

Nepal Cricket in the 21st Century

From 2000 to 2009

In 2000, Nepal's efforts to develop young players paid off. The Nepal national under-19 cricket team finished eighth in the Under-19 World Cup. The senior team had its best performance later that year. They reached the semi-finals of the 2000 ACC Trophy. They lost to Hong Kong in Sharjah. The next year, they played in the ICC Trophy for the first time. They won against Germany and Gibraltar. But a loss to Namibia stopped them from moving past the first round.

Nepal finished second to the UAE in the 2002 ACC Trophy in Singapore. In 2003, Nepal hosted the ACC Emerging Nations Tournament. They easily won against Bhutan and the Maldives. They won so well that they were not invited back to the tournament in 2005. Raju Khadka was the first Nepali player to score a century (100 runs) in an international match. He scored 105 runs off just 50 balls against Bhutan.

In 2004, Nepal played first-class cricket for the first time. They played in the ICC Intercontinental Cup against the UAE and Malaysia. They beat Malaysia but drew with the UAE. This meant they didn't reach the semi-finals. Nepal finished third in the 2004 ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament. This allowed them to play in the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup. They also finished fifth in the 2004 ACC Trophy. This qualified them for a special tournament for the 2005 ICC Trophy. They finished third in this tournament, so they did not qualify for the main 2005 ICC Trophy. Shakti Gauchan scored 106 runs against Italy in this tournament. In the 2005 ICC Intercontinental Cup, they beat the UAE and drew with Hong Kong. But they missed the semi-finals by a small margin. They were runners-up to the UAE in the 2005 ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament.

In March 2006, Nepal played Namibia in Windhoek. This game was to decide the last team in the 2006 ICC Intercontinental Cup. Nepal needed to win to qualify, but the match ended in a draw. Later that year, they visited Pakistan. They played against the Pakistan Cricket Academy before the 2006 ACC Trophy in Kuala Lumpur.

In the 2006 ACC Trophy, Nepal bowled out Myanmar for only 10 runs. This was after Myanmar batted first. No Myanmar player scored more than one run. Extras (runs not from hitting the ball) were the highest score with five. Mehboob Alam took seven wickets, and Binod Das took three. Nepal then scored three runs off the first ball and won by ten wickets. Many called this the biggest mismatch in international cricket history. A score of 10 runs is the lowest ever in men's international cricket. Nepal finished fourth in the tournament after losing to Afghanistan. They won the ACC Premier League in 2006.

In 2007, they played in the 2007 ACC Twenty20 Cup in Kuwait. They finished fourth in their group.

In May 2008, Nepal went to Jersey for the 2008 ICC World Cricket League Division Five. Mehboob Alam made a world record by taking all ten wickets in a match against Mozambique. He is in the Guinness World Records for being the first bowler to take all 10 wickets in a limited-overs international cricket match. Nepal finished first in Group A. But they lost to Afghanistan in the semi-final. They finished third overall after beating the USA. Only the top two teams went to the next division. So, Nepal missed their chance for the 2011 World Cup. Later, Nepal played in the 2008 ACC Trophy Elite. They finished fourth after losing to the UAE and then to Afghanistan.

Nepal finished fifth in the 2009 ACC Twenty20 Cup. They beat Singapore by 9 wickets. In a group match against Kuwait, Nepal needed 7 runs off the last ball to win. Binod Bhandari, playing his first national team game, hit a six on the last ball to tie the match. Nepal then won the match in a special "bowl-out" tie-breaker.

From 2010 to 2014

Nepal won their first big tournament in February 2010. They beat the USA in the final of the 2010 ICC World Cricket League Division Five in Kathmandu. Sharad Vesawkar scored 105 runs against Fiji in this tournament. Nepal played very well in the 2010 ACC Trophy Elite. They won all their group matches and beat Malaysia in the semi-final. But they lost the final to ODI team Afghanistan and finished second. Nepal came third in the 2010 ICC World Cricket League Division Four. This meant they stayed in Division Four for 2012. In November, Nepal played in the 2010 Asian Games. They lost to Sri Lanka in the quarter-final. This was Nepal's first match against a "Full Member" nation (a top cricket country).

In December 2011, Nepal hosted the 2011 ACC Twenty20 Cup. They finished fourth, which qualified them for the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier.

In early 2012, Nepal played Afghanistan in a series of T20I and ODI matches. Afghanistan won all the games.

Nepal finished seventh in the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. They beat Kenya and Papua New Guinea. Shakti Gauchan took Nepal's first international hat-trick against Denmark. In September 2012, Nepal played in the 2012 ICC World Cricket League Division Four. Both Subash Khakurel and Anil Mandal scored centuries. Khakurel scored 115 against the United States, and Mandal scored 113 against Denmark. In a match against Malaysia, Shakti Gauchan set a new record. His bowling figures of 10 overs, 8 maidens, 2 runs, and 3 wickets were the most economical ever in limited-overs cricket. Nepal won all six matches and moved up to 2013 ICC World Cricket League Division Three. Nepali players won "man of the match" awards in all six games. Basanta Regmi won "player of the tournament" for taking 21 wickets. In October, Nepal played in the 2012 ACC Trophy Elite. They shared the trophy with the UAE after a thrilling tied final in Sharjah. Captain Paras Khadka scored 106 runs against Kuwait, his first century for Nepal.

Nepal hosted the 2013 ACC Twenty20 Cup in Kirtipur and Lalitpur. Nepal easily reached the final, thanks to their captain, Paras Khadka. They beat the UAE by 6 wickets. Nepal had already qualified for the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier by reaching the semi-final. Nepal finished second after losing to ODI team Afghanistan. Huge crowds supported the Nepali team, with up to 25,000 fans at the semi-final and final. Hundreds of thousands watched on TV. This was the biggest public support for cricket outside the top Test-playing nations. Nepal won the 2013 ICC World Cricket League Division Three in Bermuda. This qualified them for the 2014 World Cup Qualifier. Nepal also played in the 2013 ACC Emerging Teams Cup. Here, teams of under-23 players from top Test nations played. Nepal finished third in the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE. They qualified for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 by beating Hong Kong in a very close quarter-final.

T20I Status and Matches

On June 28, 2014, the ICC gave Nepal T20I status. Nepal played very well in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Nepal had already played three T20I matches before getting this status. The ICC had said that all matches in the 2014 T20 World Cup would count as T20Is.

Nepal played their first ever Twenty20 International series against Hong Kong in November 2014. The series was in Sri Lanka. Only one match was played because of rain. Nepal lost the match. But Sompal Kami played very well, scoring 40 runs off 31 balls. He came in to bat at position 10. This was a world record for the highest score by a batsman at that position.

Nepal played their second Twenty20 International series against the Netherlands in 2015. Nepal lost the 4-match series 3–1. Paras Khadka was named the best player of the series.

Nepal did not qualify for the 2015 World Cup. They finished ninth in the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. Nepal was the best of the three associate teams in their group at the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. They easily beat Hong Kong. They batted well against Bangladesh. They also won strongly against Afghanistan. This was their first win against Afghanistan since 2004. Nepal's bowlers did not bowl any "wides" or "no balls" in the whole tournament. Nepal was also the only team that did not let opponents score more than 140 runs in an innings. Nepal finished third in the 2014 ACC Premier League. They beat ODI teams UAE and Hong Kong. This qualified them for the 2014 ACC Championship, which was later cancelled. In September, Nepal played in the 2014 Asian Games. But they did not get past the quarter-finals. Nepal won the 2014 ICC World Cricket League Division Three in Malaysia. This qualified them for the 2015 ICC World Cricket League Division Two. Gyanendra Malla scored his first century, 114 runs, against Singapore. In November, Nepal visited Sri Lanka. They played two three-day matches and a Twenty20 International series against Hong Kong.

From 2015 to 2019

Nepal finished fourth in the 2015 ICC World Cricket League Division Two in Namibia. This qualified them for the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship. But Nepal did not move up to Division One. They also did not qualify for the 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup. This was because they finished third in the round-robin stage. Basanta Regmi became the first bowler to take 100 wickets in the World Cricket League. He did this by taking 2 wickets against the Netherlands. On April 11, 2015, Nepal hosted a special match. It was a tribute to Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes. The match was played at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. In June, Nepal visited the Netherlands for a Twenty20 International series. Then Nepal played in the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in Ireland and Scotland. The team finished seventh in Group A. This meant they did not qualify for the main ICC World Twenty20 for the second time in a row.

Nepal finished second in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two. This earned them a spot in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. On March 15, Nepal gained One Day International (ODI) status for the first time. They won against Papua New Guinea in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Because they got ODI status, Nepal also got back their Twenty20 International (T20I) status. After gaining ODI status, Nepal's captain, Paras Khadka, said they want to reach Test status. He believes this will take about eight to ten years.

Canada Tour of Nepal 2024

In February 2024, Nepal played a cricket series against Canada in Kirtipur. In the first ODI, Captain Rohit Paudel took 4 wickets, helping Nepal win by 7 runs. On February 10, Nepal made history by chasing 286 runs in the second ODI. This was thanks to Paudel, Anil Sah, and Dev Khanal. They won by four wickets, tying Nepal's record for the most successful run chase.

The series ended on February 12 with Nepal winning the third ODI by 9 wickets. Anil Sah and Bhim Sharki scored centuries, leading Nepal to a clean sweep (winning all games). Nepal's winning streak at home reached 15 consecutive ODIs, one of the longest in men's ODI history.

ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024

In Nepal's first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2024 on June 4, 2024, they played the Netherlands in Dallas. This was Nepal's second World Cup appearance. Nepal was bowled out for 106 runs. The Netherlands' bowlers, especially Tim Pringle and Logan van Beek, made it hard for Nepal to score. Nepal fought hard but lost. Captain Rohit Paudel said they needed stronger partnerships. Nepal's bowlers tried their best, but missed catches were costly. Max O'Dowd scored a half-century, and the Netherlands won.

Their second match, against Sri Lanka, was cancelled due to heavy rain. Nepal got 1 point.

Their third match, against South Africa, was a historic game. Nepal's bowlers, led by Kushal Bhurtel (4 wickets) and Dipendra Singh Airee (3 wickets), limited South Africa to only 115 runs. Reeza Hendricks scored 47 runs for South Africa. Nepal started well, scoring 34 runs in the first 7 overs. But the 8th over was tough, with Tabraiz Shamsi taking two quick wickets. Aasif Sheikh and Anil Sah then helped Nepal reach 82/2. They needed 34 runs off 42 balls. However, South Africa took more wickets. By the end of the 17th over, Nepal needed 18 runs off 18 balls. Shamsi took two more wickets, including Aasif Sheikh (42 runs). Nepal needed 16 runs off 12 balls. Anrich Nortje took another wicket. Sompal Kami hit a six, bringing the need to 8 runs off 6 balls. In the last over, Gulsan Jha hit a boundary, needing 4 runs off 3 balls. He then got 2 runs, needing 2 runs off 2 balls. The next ball was a dot. On the last ball, Nepal needed 2 runs to win or 1 run for a tie. Gulsan couldn't hit the ball, and they tried to run for a single. But he was run out, and Nepal lost by just 1 run.

This meant Nepal was out of the World Cup. Their last match was against Bangladesh. Bangladesh batted first. Sompal Kami took an early wicket. Dipendra Singh Airee took another. Bangladesh was 26/3 after the powerplay. More wickets fell, and Bangladesh was 52/5 after 8 overs. Sandeep Lamichhane took his 100th wicket in T20Is. Bangladesh was limited to 106 runs. Nepal started their chase hoping to win. But they lost early wickets and were 20/3 after the powerplay. They were 26/5 after 6 overs. Dipendra Singh Airee and Kushal Malla tried to build a partnership. Nepal reached 77/5, needing 30 runs off 24 balls. But more wickets fell. In the end, Nepal scored only 85 runs and lost. Bangladesh moved to the Super Eight.
