Philip Walter Foden (born May 28, 2000) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a midfielder for the English club Manchester City. He also plays for the England national team.
Phil Foden became well-known in 2017. He won the FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball award. This happened after England's team won the Under-17 World Cup. He started playing for Manchester City in the same year. In December, he was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.
Since then, Foden has played over 300 games for Manchester City. He has won many awards with the club. This includes a continental treble in the 2022–23 season. He was the youngest player to win a Premier League winner's medal in 2018. In 2019, he won another Premier League title. He also became Manchester City's youngest goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League. He is the youngest English player to start and score in the knockout stages of that competition.

Early Life and Start in Football
Philip Walter Foden was born on May 28, 2000, in Stockport, England. He was a big fan of Manchester City since he was a boy. He joined the club when he was just four years old. In July 2016, he officially joined their Academy.
Manchester City paid for his education at St Bede's College. On December 6, 2016, City's manager, Pep Guardiola, included Foden in the team for a UEFA Champions League match. He was a substitute but did not play in that game.
First Steps in the 2017–18 Season

Foden made his first appearance for Manchester City on November 21, 2017. This was in a Champions League game against Feyenoord. He came on as a substitute. He became the fourth-youngest English player to play in the Champions League. He was 17 years and 177 days old.
On December 6, he became the youngest English player to start a Champions League match. He was 17 years and 192 days old. This record was later broken by Jude Bellingham. Foden also became the first player born in the year 2000 to start a Champions League game. He made his Premier League debut on December 16, 2017.
Foden played as a substitute in the 2018 EFL Cup final in February 2018. Manchester City won 3–0 against Arsenal. After Kevin De Bruyne got injured, manager Pep Guardiola started using Foden more in a central attacking role. On August 16, Foden started in the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla. City won in a penalty shoot-out, giving Foden his first trophy of the season. On December 22, Foden scored in the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup final. City won 4–0 against Fluminense, and Foden won his first Club World Cup title. He was the first English player to score in this final since Wayne Rooney in 2008.
On February 5, 2024, Foden scored his second Premier League hat-trick. This was in a 3–1 win against Brentford. On April 3, Foden scored his third Premier League hat-trick. Youth Team Success
In May 2017, Foden scored in the final of the 2017 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. The England under-17s lost to Spain in a penalty shoot-out.
In October of the same year, Foden gained a lot of attention. He scored twice in the final of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, again against Spain. England won the competition. He was named the best player of the tournament. He won the FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball award.
On May 27, 2019, Foden was part of England's squad for the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He scored an impressive goal, his first for the U21s. This was in a 2–1 loss to France.
Playing for the Senior England Team
Debut and UEFA Euro 2020
On August 25, 2020, Gareth Southgate chose Foden for the England senior team for the first time. He played his first international game against Iceland on September 5, 2020. England won 1–0. A few days later, Foden and teammate Mason Greenwood were removed from the England squad. This was because they broke the team's rules about isolation.
Foden scored his first two goals for England on November 18, 2020. This was during a UEFA Nations League match against Iceland.
On June 1, 2021, Foden was named in the squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He joined the team later because he was playing in the Champions League final. On June 8, Foden dyed his hair blonde. 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024
On November 10, 2022, Foden was included in England's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He played his first game in the tournament as a substitute in a 6–2 win against Iran. On November 29, he scored England's second goal in a 3–0 win against Wales. This was his first goal in a major international tournament. In the next game against Senegal, Foden assisted goals for Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka.
Foden was named in England's squad for UEFA Euro 2024. He started on the left side of the attack in the team's first match against Serbia. England won 1–0.
How Phil Foden Plays
Foden is left-footed and can play in different positions. He can play as a wing-back or a winger on the right side. However, Pep Guardiola has said he is "more of a midfielder." Sometimes, he plays in a central attacking role as a false 9.
In 2017, Guardiola called him a "special player." He said Foden has great potential. Louise Taylor of The Guardian described Foden as having "tight, adhesive control." She also noted his ability to easily move past opponents. Veteran football writer Brian Glanville called him a "gifted and precocious teenager" in 2018.
Phil Foden's Personal Life
Phil Foden has three children with his long-term girlfriend, Rebecca Cooke. Their son was born in 2019, their daughter in 2021, and another child was born during Euro 2024. He wears the number 47 shirt. He has a matching tattoo on his neck to honor his grandfather, Ronnie, who passed away at age 47. On June 26, 2024, Foden left England's squad during the European tournament to be there for the birth of his third child.
Foden enjoys fishing and considers it one of his favorite hobbies outside of football.
